           'sentimiento anarquista'

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Read More

Abstract: The essays that comprise Volume 26 of the Arizona Journal of Hispanic Cultural Studies embrace a variety of modalities of cultural analysis and subject matter from interpretations of under scrutinized cultural works and original approaches to more canonical ones, to engagement with the relationship between recent forms of cultural diffusion, important social movements, and politics.Spatial and border issues have always been well represented in the pages of this publication. That is certainly the case in Volume 26. Irune Del Rio Gabiola deploys recent work in neocolonial examines how communities combat "geografías extractivistas" or "zonas de no-ser" with peaceful tactics of resistance to achieve social and ... • About the Artist: Robin Savage

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: I first had the opportunity to meet Robin Savage in December of 2019 while visiting Portland, Maine, where he currently resides with his wife and fellow poet-intellectual, Mary Molinary. Over the past thirty-plus years, Robin has dedicated whatever free time could be stolen from his extensive teaching career to painterly artistic production. His output has been prolific. Upon entering the Art-space of their home one is immediately struck by the visual dynamism and diversity of paintings that envelop the walls. These paintings range across a number of styles that he has developed over the decades (such as "epic style" or "jazz style"), drawing from a broad swathe of influences. An autodidact, Robin is almost ... Read More

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Mapping

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The poetry and prose of Mexican author Rosario Castellanos often exhibits a mix of humor, melodrama, irony, and tragedy within single works. Emotionally compelling writing like hers is not only effective to engage the reader at numerous levels of consciousness; it also allows Castellanos to lace her writing with biting criticism of chronic gendered and socio-political inequality in Mexico, a tendency described as a "critical edge" (Lund 79). While scholars have rightfully attended to the theme of embodied gender experience throughout her works, another theme—that of the failed promise of Official Indigenismo, that is, official government policy designed to confront perceived social and anthropological problems ... • An Arguedean Revolution on the US/Mexico Border: José María Arguedas's

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Separated by more than fifty years and thousands of miles of geographic distance, Peruvian José María Arguedas's El zorro de arriba y el zorro de abajo (1971) and Yuri Herrera's Señales que precederán al fin del mundo (2010) coincide much more than they contrast.1 The two novels register the complex set of challenges faced by societies caught-up in dizzying processes of modernization and globalization. Arguedas considers the rapid industrialization of Chimbote—a coastal city to the north of Peru known for its many fishpaste factories—whereas Herrera fixes his attention on three unnamed cities crucial to the movement of goods and bodies across Mexico's northern border.2 Difficult geographies and conflictive ...            adaptación de La casa de Bernarda Alba (1982)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

• Voguing, Revolt, and the Neoliberal State in Santiago and Chicago

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In recent years, the most powerful images in global politics have come from mass gatherings in public spaces, ranging from revolts against authoritarian politics, to austerity economics, public health crises, state violence, and more. Political life in virtually every corner of the globe has been marked by citizens taking to the streets to contest a state of affairs, and the confrontational manner in which increasingly militarized police forces respond to these protests has led to a situation in which thinking revolt is one of the more urgent tasks of contemporary political thought. It is not simply a matter of attempting to distinguish revolt from some other form of assembly, as if the line between reasonable and ... Read More

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Somewhere in a Guatemalan favela, a young girl (Karen Martínez) enters a makeshift bathroom, stands in front of the mirror and takes scissors from her bag. She cuts her hair, bandages her breasts, and swallows a pill. By the time she leaves the bathroom, Sara has turned into the boy Osvaldo. Her friend Juan (Brandon López) sits on his neatly made bed in a small room. He pauses a moment before pulling his backpack from under the bed. Sara and Juan are later joined by their friend Samuel (Carlos Chajon), who lives in the same neighborhood, and Chauk (Rodolfo Domínguez), an Indigenous adolescent boy who does not speak Spanish. Together, they make their way north in an attempt to enter the United States (US) via ... Read More

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Read More

Read More

A Graphic Novel (2021) (first published in Swedish in 2017), is an adaptation of the postmodern allegorical novel United States of Banana (2011), masterfully written by Giannina Braschi, a Puerto Rican writer based in New York who defies any attempt to be classified. We can argue that United States of Banana (USB) also defies any attempt to be classified. It is a philosophically rich novel that crosses genres such as fiction, poetry, manifesto, and experimental theater. It is a political allegory of US imperialism and Puerto Rican ... Read More

Abstract: This edited volume in the Colección El árbol de las palabras, No. 5, that the Academia de la Lengua Norteamericana (ANLE) puts together, provides an overview of the background of inclusive language and research into language inclusivity and gender neutrality, an approach whose practices have met with resistance from the Royal Spanish Academy of Language (RAE) and other associations concerned with the purity and rigor of linguistic forms. Language inclusion is the practice of mindfulness with regards to gender when writing. Academics, writers, teachers and students from different affiliations and communities advocate for implementing forms that avoid linguistic sexism and integrate those in our society today, where ... Abstract: The vacuum created by modernity's displacement on the global stage has created the need for alternative theoretical frameworks to guide humanity as they reconceptualize the world around them in meaningful, decolonial ways. Joining the likes of Achille Mbembe and Boaventura de Sousa Santos, Dr. Mary Pat Brady of Cornell University provides such a lens in her most recent book Scales of Captivity: Racial Capitalism and the Latinx Child (2022). As ambitious as it is thorough, Scales scours over 150 years of philosophical, political, and literary history, supplying the reader with fascinating and pertinent insights into the creation and maintenance of the complex racial/social hierarchies that currently exist throughout ... Abstract: The study of Asian cultures has evolved considerably since Edward Said published Orientalism in 1975, in an attempt to denounce the hegemony of political, economic, military and, above all, discursive practices of Europe and the United States towards the Asian continent, which was reduced to the comfortable notion of the "Orient." The field of cultural studies emerged to a large extent from the debate initiated by Said, and today, works are not only focused on denouncing hegemonic powers but also on understanding the nature of these hegemonies, the structures that sustain them and how they feedback, while at the same time posing problems in intercultural relations, even between actors of different origins within ... • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Many celebrated writers in the history of Latin American letters found work as journalists and first published some of their best known writing in newspapers, yet the central role of literary journalism in Latin American literary history has at times escaped the notice of North American scholars. Pablo Calvi's Latin American Adventures in Literary Journalism offers a broad look at that history, "noticing a few lines connecting authors and periods" (228) stretching from foundational texts like Domingo Sarmiento's Facundo (1845), through the rise of the mass media at the turn of the twentieth century, up to the advent of the testimonio genre during the 1960s. By considering authors across two centuries, Calvi gives ... Read More
