Abstract: Adam CooperIn March 2020, the day before students were to leave the campus of The University of Arizona for Spring Break, I told both of my classes that they should probably check out the directions for using Zoom in the unlikely event we might have to use that course delivery platform in the second half of the Spring semester. That was the last time I saw those students in person. Little did I suspect at that moment in time that my offhanded suggestion would become a way of life for educators as the pandemic threw our professional and personal lives into a state of chaos. Given what has transpired since January 2020 in general and March 2020 in academia, I find it miraculous that you are now able to read this ... Read More

  • About the Artist: Adam Cooper-Terán: Multimedia Designer and Performer in
           the Time of Disaster Capitalism

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Adam Cooper-Terán <antral.net> is a Tucson-based artist of Mexican, Yaqui, and Jewish heritage. He struck me as the best artist to feature in this volume published on and in global pandemic and disaster capitalism, because his body of work is focused powerfully on two specific movements that are productively put into dialogue; decolonializing death and the grieving process, and doing a type of artistic archaeology of power on a specific landscape.Cooper-Terán refers to his Mexican and Yaqui heritage when it comes to growing up with a kind of understanding and respect for the dead that he credits with fueling his involvement with The All Souls Procession. Cooper-Terán extends this work by incorporating his art into ... Read More

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

• Airing the Nation’s Dirty Laundry through a Real-Crime Account: Cazals,
Ibargüengoitia and the Infamous Poquianchis Scandal

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Crime, especially when diffused and amplified by the media, plays a compelling role in the popular imagination and ordinary life. Criminologists argue that pervasive crime accounts from popular culture serve as performers of social functions and thus, should not be downplayed as schlock or voyeurism. These narratives, they argue, create moments of intense collective emotions, which in turn generate instances of shared identity born from communal responses to media generated hype. They also function to promote common moral codes in modern society and influence how we formulate public policies (Rafter and Brown 5). Likewise, historians underpin the unique resonance of criminal accounts, arguing that they are key to ... Read More

           suburbios de Ruy Xoconostle

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Ocurrió algo. In his fictional documentary Sevilla 2030 (2003), Spanish urbanist and scriptwriter ... • Performing the Moor: Disorienting Cultural Burlesque in Cartas marruecas
           and Aita Tettauen

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Although Benito Pérez Galdós published Aita Tettauen in 1905, not quite a century and a half after José Cadalso’s Cartas marruecas (completed in 1774, published post-humously in 1789), the works share a common figure: the ostensibly fake “Moor.” Through the literary “performances” of these figures, the novels alternately spotlight and disguise the making of difference. This article uses burlesque performance as an analytical trope to analyze the ways the works’ written acts of Moorishness call out the performativity—and thus the ontological precarity—of national and cultural identities, revealing them to be “imitation[s] without . . . origin[s]” (Butler xxiv). Borrowing from concepts offered by theories of ... Read More

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

• Embodiment Against Borders: Discourses of Crisis and Collaborative
Performance Art on the U.S.-Mexico Border Wall

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The headlines are designed to alarm. Media and political outlets tie immigration inextricably to the language of crisis and invasion, describing, time and again, “a crisis years in the making” (Jervis). This discourse, crafted to portray migration as a threat to U.S. sovereignty, drives immigration legislation. The human costs of the resulting policies and practices are not invisible. Reports circulate of “toddlers without diapers” alone in crowded detention facilities (Dickerson, “There is a Stench”). Images of the freezing, filthy conditions at the refugee camps established in northern Mexico due to the Remain in Mexico Program are widely available (Sieff).1 The humanitarian crisis at the border manifests as ... Photomontage Satire

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The Seville-based four-piece band, Pony Bravo, has been a fixture on the Spanish festival scene and indie club circuits now for over a decade and a half, releasing their first LP: Si bajo de espalda no me da miedo (y otras historias) in November 2007. Their music has evolved considerably over this time but is consistently interpreted by fans and Spanish music critics as an attempt to connect the sound and rhythm of the various marginalized “souths”: Andalusian rock, flamenco, African and Jamaican rhythms, U.S. southern roots rock and blues, etc. (Pato, Txopo, Ceballos, Guerola). The band musically draws inspiration from a diverse set of canons: the blues of Son House, The Doors, the flamenco and Andalusian copla ... Read More

  • Look with Thine Ears: Sonic Encounters and Eviction in Eduard Cortés’s
           Cerca de tu casa (2016)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: “A man may see how this world goes with no eyes. Look with thine ears. . . . ”In 2014, the Barcelona-based crowdfunding site Goteo sought to finance a film called Cerca de tu casa (At Your Doorstep), initially billed as “un drama social sobre los desahucios.” Spain was nearing the end of a devastating economic crisis (2008–2015), during which time hundreds of thousands of people had lost their jobs and been evicted from their homes.1 With the news that singer Sílvia Pérez Cruz had created the soundtrack and would also star in the film, the rather incongruous phrase “un musical sobre los desahucios” quickly caught on prior to the film’s official release in Spain in September 2016. Perhaps given the sobering context ... Read More

• The Real Political Arena: Juana Bignozzi’s Poetry

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: A crisis entails a dire and troubling time. The last military dictatorship in Argentina (1976–1983) definitely constitutes a crisis: human rights and democracy were violated. However, there is another crisis that started already with the coup d’état in 1976, continued throughout the illegitimate government and state violence, and persists until today. This second crisis that I am alluding to is played out in how the last military dictatorship in Argentina has been articulated in discourse. This crisis is not over. There has been a shift, in that both the type of violence and the arena of struggle are different. Nonetheless, what is common to both crises (military dictatorship and the one on its articulation) is the ... Read More

Abstract: Dr. Adrián Izquierdo’s study of the translator, author, playwright and political figure Pierre Matthieu centers on this author’s historical, biographical and translation work, and its reception in late sixteenth- and early seventeen-century Spain. In addition to recovering and exploring the impact and ramifications of Pierre Matthieu’s translations in Spain, and how he was both praised and criticized at various junctures by the likes of such important historical figures as Juan Pablo Mártir Rizo, Lorenzo Van der Hammen, Baltasar Gracián and Francisco de Quevedo, Dr. Izquierdo examines the concept of historiography that existed in sixteenth-century Spain, and how Matthieu’s histories were viewed in accordance with ... • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: At the end of the 19th century José Martí wrote in the “Prologue to Juan Antonio Pérez Bonalde’s Poem of Niagara,” that the poets of his day had ceased to write national epics like Homer’s Iliad, Virgil’s Aeneid, The Poem of the Cid, or Tasso’s Jerusalem Delivered. The newspaper, a product of the fast pace of modernity, had displace works like Dante’s Divine Comedy with the newspaper. Instead of writing on issues that affected society at large, argued Martí, contemporary poets wrote on the trivialities of their everyday lives. This was said by a politically engaged revolutionary who objected to what he interpreted to be modernity’s narcissism. Living during the first decades of the age of photography, for Martí the ...            Literature and Culture ed. by Jennifer Smith and Lisa Nalbone (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Read More

Read More
