  Abstract: Although most literary scholars consider Ernest Hemingway's 1926 novella The Torrents of Spring as an aberration in the Hemingway canon—fewer than twenty journal articles have been published about it over the past fifty years—contemporary readers should rethink its marginalized standing as it is the first book in which the author began creating a personal mythos that became such an integral part of his future work and its critical reception, establishing many of the tropes that became hallmarks of his subject matter and artistic persona that later influenced public perception about him.
