  Abstract: In eleanor brown’s novel the weird sisters, the sisters muse: “What if the name you were given had already been lived in, had been inhabited so well, as a matter of fact, that its very mention brings to mind its original owner, and leaves your existence little more than an afterthought'” (61–62). The sisters’ names are those of Shakespeare’s heroines, and the challenge to self-possession that they express is shared by a number of recent novels written by and addressed to women.   Abstract: Poetry and pregnancy are not so unlikely a pair. Both involve the arduous process of bringing something into being—a similarity that grants a long literary history to the analogy of writing poetry to giving birth. In her influential essay “Apostrophe, Animation, and Abortion,” Barbara Johnson observes that, in poetry about lost children—namely, abortion—the gender of a poetic speaker generates “expectations” that “color” poetic effects such as apostrophe (38). The substitution of poetry for pregnancy, she argues, remains “comfortably and conventionally figurative” only so long as the expectations precipitated by the gender of the poetic speaker do not invoke the concept of motherhood. Chabon had published his first novel in 1988, but he reached literary stardom in the millennium’s opening decade by delivering high-concept fiction in the guise of popular, subliterary genres. The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, for which he won the Pulitzer in 2001, funneled the paroxysms of World War II America through the golden age of comic book writing.
