  • The Gilead COMPASS Initiative®

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Among my family's origin stories is that of the Great Migration, from Mississippi to Illinois. I have fond memories of my Mississippi-born grandmothers. When they moved North, my grandmothers brought their Southern ways of living—a deep faith in God, mouth-watering cooking, and quilting. One of my most vivid memories is watching my maternal grandmother, Katie Margurite Jacobs, quilt beautiful patchworks.Quilting is an art that's been passed down throughout generations. I'm certain Grandma inherited this skill from the women in her family and community. When I close my eyes and reflect, I can see her melanin-rich, coffee-colored hands weaving the needle in and out of fabrics like the baton of a conductor leading the ... Read More

Abstract: According to the World Health Organization's (WHO's) figures for 2011, more than 34 million people worldwide are living with HIV. [Updated numbers: 38.4 million [33.9–43.8 million] people were living with HIV at the end of 2021, according to the WHO.—editor] Work being conducted by Dr. James E. K. Hildreth could significantly affect the spread of the virus. Dr Hildreth's research and personal commitment have contributed to elevating training programs and research that significantly benefit both the scientific and health care communities.Dr Hildreth, Dean of the College of Biological Sciences at the University of California—Davis, was awarded the 2012 Frederick C. Abstract: The following summaries describe some of the many community-based organizations that the Gilead COMPASS Initiative® supports.Nashville, Tennesseesubmitted by Corwin Malcolm Davis, corwinmdavis@gmail.comStigma surrounding HIV, access to care, and advocacy have often been neglected—or outright dismissed—in faith communities. Through support from the Gilead COMPASS Initiative®, the AME Publishing House, based in Nashville, Tennessee, is joining the work against HIV stigma in Black religious institutions by focusing on organizational capacity-building for sustaining future work. Through a carefully developed nine-week series, we curated a selection of anti-stigma sermons and substantive workshops from scholars ... Read More

  • "When my Brother Fell, I Picked Up His Weapons": Collective Remembrance as
Community Mobilization among Black Gay, Bisexual, and Queer Men

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: At the 2018 National African American MSM Leadership Conference on HIV/AIDS and other Health Disparities hosted by NAESM, Inc. in Atlanta, Georgia, the Counter Narrative Project (CNP) was invited to present at a session focused on the leadership development of young, Black, gay and bisexual men. The Counter Narrative Project did not want to center a biomedical approach in the session. Instead, we wanted to capture and leverage the power of collective memory. From its inception, CNP has been rooted in an understanding of the importance of collective memory and movement history as discursive interventions in public health. Thus, CNP has used collective memory,1 defined as engaging with the shared pool of memories ... Read More

Network for Black Gay Men Who are Living with HIV

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Black gay men in the United States continue to be disproportionately affected by HIV. From 2015–2019, more than 36% of U.S. HIV diagnoses were among Black men who reported sexual activity with other men, and they experienced a lower decline (5%) in HIV infections compared with White gay men (18%).1 Studies exploring the story behind these data found that societal oppression2 plays a significant role in the physical and mental health of Black gay men.3 These studies indicate that intersectional stigma related to race and sexual orientation contribute to serious physical and mental health consequences for Black gay men both pre- and post-HIV diagnosis, including social isolation and depression.1 These oppressions are ...            Collaborative Learning for Community-Based Organizations in the South

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Over the last five years, the Emory COMPASS Coordinating Center (ECCC) has offered collaborative learning opportunities focused on capacity-building to community-based HIV organizations (CBOs; HIV testing and treatment sites, social support services, faith organizations, AIDS service organizations, academic institutions, coalitions) in the South funded by the Gilead COMPASS Initiative. Capacity-building is essential, particularly in the U.S. South where there has been a lack of resources and funding. One of ECCC's signature programs is its PoWER (Partners Working for Enhanced Results) Series, a capacity-building collaborative model for organizations that takes a peer-learning approach. • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The HIV epidemic in the South has a disproportionate impact on African American community members. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 30,632 people were newly diagnosed with HIV in 2020.1 Black individuals made up nearly half (42%) of new HIV diagnoses and the Black population had a new diagnosis rate seven times higher than the White population.1 Racial differences in HIV diagnoses persist, as does HIV-related stigma.2Though studies have demonstrated that religiosity contributes to increased HIV-related stigma,3,4 in one study religiosity was not a barrier to addressing HIV-related stigma.2 Furthermore, faith-related interventions have demonstrated effectiveness in addressing HIV ... Abstract: The HIV/AIDS (Human Immunodeficiency Virus/Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) epidemic in the South is of particular concern given rising cases and the disproportionate impact of the epidemic on Black/African American community members.1 In 2019, the rate of Black male HIV diagnoses was 8.1 times that of White males, and the rate of Black female HIV diagnoses was 12.5 times that of White females.1,2 Additionally, 42.1% of people diagnosed with HIV in 2019 were African American.1,2 Preliminary 2020 data showed that 61% of Black people living with HIV had an undetectable viral load compared with 71% of White people living with HIV.3Addressing the complex issues of HIV/AIDS in the United States (U.S.) South requires ... Abstract: Despite significant HIV biomedical advances (e.g., pre-exposure prophylaxis [PrEP], treatment as prevention (TasP), long-acting injectables), HIV continues as an epidemic. The U.S. South accounts for over 50% of new HIV diagnoses.,1 The distribution of HIV reflects socio-structural barriers, including oppressive policies, stigma, racism, and few resources dedicated to addressing social determinants of health.2–4 For example, many southern states have not expanded Medicaid; have passed anti-lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) policies; and have criminalized the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).5 These structural barriers shape the availability and quality of HIV prevention and treatment ... Abstract: People living with HIV (PLWH) tend to experience internalized stigma, often as a combination of enacted and anticipated stigmas, in response to their taboo diagnosis—something magnified by minority intersectionality.1,2,3 In 2019, a community-academic partnership between The University of Memphis School of Public Health and Headliners Memphis, a grassroots organization led by Black same-gender loving men and Black transgender women, implemented a photovoice (PV) project Snap out Stigma (SOS), that served as a platform for PLWH to share their experiences of HIV and related stigmas.4,5,6 Thirty-five participants took photos of places and things that reminded them of stigma, then shared their images and stories in ...            Stigma

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: HIV-related stigma is highly prevalent in the U.S. South* and is associated with negative outcomes including social isolation, delayed HIV testing, and poor physical health, mental health, and medication adherence.1–3 The high levels of stigma have been implicated as contributing to greater HIV rates in the Southern U.S. compared with the U.S. overall. Mitigating the potential negative effects of stigma is critical to improving HIV outcomes and decreasing HIV transmission in the region.4,5 Community-based organizations (CBOs) that provide HIV prevention and care services have been found to positively influence HIV outcomes such as HIV-related knowledge, risk behavior, physical and mental health, and participation ... Abstract: There are over 800 community-based organizations (CBOs) that support people living with and/or affected by HIV in the United States.1 The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 complicated the sustainability of many non-profit organizations attempting to maintain HIV services, especially that of organizations in the nine southern states (AL, FL, GA, LA, MS, NC, SC, TN, TX)2 with disproportionate impact of HIV.3 The lack of clear policies and procedures for addressing COVID-19, the enforcement of social distancing protocols, and challenges providing care to patients simultaneously diagnosed with COVID-19 and HIV were all factors that complicated service provision during COVID-19.4,5The transition from in-person ... • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Compared with other U.S. regions, the southern U.S. is disproportionately affected by the HIV epidemic.1 The epidemic's disproportionate impact is due in part to structural factors, such as stigma, poverty, and unemployment,1 as well as health care provider shortages2 and lack of Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act in most of the South.3While community-based organizations (CBOs) have been responsive to the needs of their communities, they are often forced to fill gaps in services with minimal resources (e.g., funding, training, staff capacity) due to funding mechanisms that favor output-oriented, efficiency-focused organizations.4 As a result, CBOs are often overburdened (e.g., high caseloads) ... Abstract: Transgender women in the Southeast are at the center of the modern-day HIV crisis in the U.S.,1,2 and transgender women of color are experiencing the highest rates of new infections. According to the CDC,1 "62% of Black/African American transgender women" surveyed are living with HIV, "compared to 17% of White transgender women." Research suggests that use of preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP), an effective measure for preventing HIV, is low among Black transgender women in the region due to low awareness, low self-perceived risk, or lack of access to a provider willing to prescribe the medication.3 HIV prevention and care are increasingly provided by primary care physicians in the U.S.,4 yet research also suggests ...            Black Power, Liberation, and Healing Initiative

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The impacts of trauma on mental health, sexual behaviors, and HIV have been well documented.1–3 Anti-Black racism within the health care system is associated with traumas and medical mistrust for Black communities most affected by HIV,4–6 ultimately contributing to low HIV medication adherence.7 Staff representing the most affected populations also experience traumas affecting service provision and delivery. HIV service organizations need the resources to plan, create, expand, implement, and evaluate much-needed organizational-level programs and projects to address anti-Blackness and racialized trauma experienced by staff and clients. This is exceptionally important for U.S. southern communities and organizations ... Abstract: Disproportionate rates of HIV in the U.S. South and the need for effective HIV services has been well documented.1–5 Research also clearly demonstrates that HIV is profoundly characterized by health inequity, resulting in disproportionate rates of HIV among communities that face systemic oppression, including Black and Latino gay and same gender-loving men;6 Black cisgender women;7 and Black transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming individuals (TGNC).8 Recognition of these health inequities has spurred a move toward understanding and addressing structural barriers to accessing and engaging in the HIV care continuum.9–10Increasingly, researchers and health care providers have identified trauma experienced ...
