  • Vowel deletion as grammatically controlled gestural overlap in Uspanteko

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Supplementary material: http://muse.jhu.edu/article/907239Phonological theories have historically centered on the analysis of discrete units, like segments or features, which serve as the basis of phonological contrasts, alternations, and constraints. These discrete, abstract units must also be linked with a corresponding phonetic realization, in continuous time and physical space, during actual acts of speaking or listening. Given an abstract symbolic representation like prints [phɹɪnts], what principles relate that representation to the articulatory and acoustic variation responsible for physical phonetic forms like (e.g. Hockett 1955)' Research at the phonetics-phonology interface is often concerned with this ... • Partial control with overt embedded subjects in Chirag

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: That obligatory control (OC) constructions can feature an overt embedded subject has been known since at least Borer 1989, which documents the phenomenon in Korean, Italian, Chinese, and Saramaccan, as shown in 1 and 2.1(1)Korean (2)Italian In 1, the lowest embedded clause is a controlled complement under the matrix control verb yaksokhata 'promise'. Yet it features its own subject in the form of the long-distance reflexive caki obligatorily coindexed with the matrix subject. In a similar way, the infinitival complement of the subject control verb odiare 'hate' has a subject in the form of the 1sg pronoun io in example 2 from Italian. Although less discussed in theoretical literature, examples like these are ... Read More

  • Language play is language variation: Quantitative evidence and what it
           implies about language change

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Language play—defined by Crystal (1998:1) as 'bending and breaking the rules of the language … for fun'—is an ordinary and ubiquitous part of linguistic practice (Kirshenblatt-Gimblett & Sherzer 1976, Crystal 1998, Burridge 2004, Anis 2007, Veale 2012, Stanlaw 2020). It yields output that 'hover[s] … on the boundary between what is acceptable and what is unacceptable' (Crystal 1998:155). In other words, language play is intentional linguistic nonstandardness produced for the sake of humor and/or subversion. The tendency to engage in language play appears to be common across human cultures (Kirshenblatt-Gimblett & Sherzer 1976, Crystal 1998), as is play in general.1Computer-mediated communication (CMC) is highly ... • The development of phonological patterns in an urban dialect contact
           setting: Evidence from Seoul Korean

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Over the past few decades, the field of quantitative sociolinguistics has made major contributions to improving our understanding of the mechanisms behind language variation and change. At the heart of this enterprise are the apparent-time studies pioneered by William Labov. In his early studies in Martha's Vineyard and New York City, Labov (1963) developed a set of methodological innovations, using apparent-time differences to infer the progress of linguistic changes. In apparent-time studies, linguistic variation, a prerequisite for language change, is investigated by comparing different age groups; observed differences between successive generations of a speech community are considered to reflect diachronic ... • The syntax of English presentatives

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: We use the label presentatives to refer to sentences of the type exemplified in 1–4 below, which are both frequently used within a language and commonly found across languages, yet have not been extensively studied by syntacticians or formal semanticists. In informal terms, we can think of them as sentences that call the addressee's attention to the presence of some entity (or some event) in the here and now of the utterance context. For example, a speaker may use a sentence like 1 to introduce their daughter to the addressee. If speaker and addressee have been talking about their pets and one of the speaker's cats comes into sight, the speaker might utter 2, likely with focal stress on here, drawing the ... Read More

  • Anti-Pied-Piping

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In many languages, the presence of focus in a sentence triggers a characteristic morphosyntactic response, such as a marked word order via movement or the appearance of a focus particle. For example, in Hungarian (canonically SVO), exhaustive focus triggers movement to a dedicated, immediately preverbal position, as in 1.1(1)Focus-triggered movement in Hungarian (Horvath 1981:117) A language may likewise indicate the presence of focus and an associated semantics using a dedicated particle. For example, additive focus is indicated in Japanese with the particle mo, as in 2. Languages may also use particle placement and movement simultaneously, or use altogether different strategies, as we discuss ... Read More

  • Variation in second and heritage languages: Crosslinguistic perspectives
ed. by Robert Bayley, Dennis R. Preston, and Xiaoshi Li (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: This edited volume centers upon variability in second and heritage languages as a necessary attribute of all language development and change, focusing particularly on variability in learners' language that is primarily tied to linguistic context. As the editors and authors of the introductory chapter correctly state, the idea that the utterances produced by second language (L2) learners are variably influenced by both social and linguistic context is not new. They state that the intended contribution of this volume is to expand scholarship in three areas of research on developmental variability: (i) the number of second and heritage languages (HLs) and language varieties included in the study of variation in second ... • Mainstreaming translanguaging pedagogy through language policy:
Opportunities and challenges in a South African university

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In the South African higher-education sector, significant strides toward inclusion have been made by universities through enacting language policies that deliberately promote multilingualism and linguistic diversity. This has been a direct consequence of Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) recommendations obligating universities to craft and implement comprehensive language policies that contribute to the transformation of university education (DHET 2020). Toward this end, university language policies are supposed to mainstream previously marginalized indigenous African languages in teaching and learning, thereby contributing to the inclusion of African-language-speaking students and the elimination ... • Pedagogical linguistics: Connecting formal linguistics to language
           teaching

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Applying insights from linguistic research to language teaching and teacher education is anything but new—especially within the European linguistics community, which has increasingly focused on issues of multilingualism, on establishing common language-assessment tools across European countries (most notably the 'Common European Framework of Reference for Languages' (CEFR)),1 and on ideas about how to improve language teaching and policies for refugees and migrants. This article introduces the Language readership to a new pan-European enterprise that is referred to as pedagogical linguistics and that bridges the gap between linguistic research and language teaching by using empirical insights and theoretical tools ... • 'What' clauses can and 'which' cannot: A Romanian puzzle

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Romanian exhibits a puzzling contrast that, to the best of our knowledge, has not yet been noticed in the language, nor has it been attested in any other Romance or Indo-European languages. Romanian interrogative wh-clauses can be introduced by the complex wh-phrases ce 'what' + NP or care 'which' + NP, as shown in 1 and 2, respectively.1(1)Interrogative clauses introduced by 'what' + NP (2)Interrogative clauses introduced by 'which' + NP By contrast, only one of these two options is available for two different kinds of free relative clauses (henceforth, FRs), which are noninterrogative wh-constructions whose distribution and interpretation resemble those of nominals or prepositional phrases: maximal free relative ...
