  Abstract: Given its industrial expansion in the half century following the Civil War, the growth of U.S. power in the Caribbean may well have been an inexorable historical process, but it was certainly not smooth. Rising American power caused consternation among local populations, resistance from European empires and postcolonial nations, and was in the final event underpinned by force, with the United States intervening militarily on multiple occasions to promote its interests and the threat of violence shaping its diplomacy on many others.   Abstract: On June 28, 1894, Kawata Masazō (1863–1942) stood on the deck of the Mutsu-maru in Japan's southwestern port of Moji when he heard the steam whistle announce its 3:30 a.m. departure.1 As the iron screw steamer emerged from dark clouds of coal smoke into the clear night air, Kawata noted its speed, the gentle breeze, and the unusual calmness of the water.   Abstract: With this well-researched book, Murphy brings readers to an underexplored region of the Caribbean: the southeastern islands within the chain traditionally known as the Lesser Antilles. Murphy dubs the islands the Creole Archipelago, which she defines as "a chain of small volcanic islands, each visible from the next, that stretches 280 miles from Guadeloupe in the north to Grenada in the south" (p. 6).   Abstract: Recently scholars have turned their attention to the impact Asia, and especially Persia and the Ottoman Empire, made in France prior to Montesquieu's Persian Letters.1 Junko Takeda's timely book takes off from this point in the early eighteenth century arguing that Persia continued to make a strong impact in France, shaping economics, military technology, and politics from the pre-Revolutionary era to Napoleon.
