  • Introduction: Global Travel, Exploration, and Comparative Study of Empire

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: This special issue addresses what can be gained from a comparative examination of long-distance travelers during the age of empire.1 Questions to address include: to what extent did the individual identities, personalities, and backgrounds of elite travelers relate to their opinions on the state of colonial or imperial affairs which they observed in their travels' Were imperial travelers' observations representative of the imperial core's opinions and assumptions about imperial spaces, including peripheral ones' To what degree did individual travelers who were traveling to destinations which were under the control of a rival imperial power provide descriptions or impressions which confirmed or rejected assumptions ... • Passing the Torch' Anglo-American Encounters in the British West
Indies and Negotiating White Supremacy, c. 1865–1914

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Given its industrial expansion in the half century following the Civil War, the growth of U.S. power in the Caribbean may well have been an inexorable historical process, but it was certainly not smooth. Rising American power caused consternation among local populations, resistance from European empires and postcolonial nations, and was in the final event underpinned by force, with the United States intervening militarily on multiple occasions to promote its interests and the threat of violence shaping its diplomacy on many others. In the British West Indies, however, the rise of the United States did not lead to military action. Between the 1890s and the First World War, Britain and the United States navigated a ... Read More

Abstract: Edward Said's seminal work on orientalism has largely contributed to our understanding of the liaison between knowledge and power and the role of scholarly institutions in the build-up of imperial rule.1 Yet at the same time, his emphasis on the British and French forms of that phenomenon, paired with his self-confessed downgrading of the German scholarly tradition and even less explicable omission of the Iberian, Dutch and Russian cases have resulted in a distorted picture of Europe viewed as an emanation of Britain and France.2 Said also presented the Asians as passive objects of European orientalism whereas there appears today a scholarly consensus that one can also legitimately speak of, say, Ottoman or Chinese ... • Mobility in an Age of Imperialism, Nation-Building, and Revolution: Kawata
           Masazō's Late-Nineteenth-Century Pacific World

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: On June 28, 1894, Kawata Masazō (1863–1942) stood on the deck of the Mutsu-maru in Japan's southwestern port of Moji when he heard the steam whistle announce its 3:30 a.m. departure.1 As the iron screw steamer emerged from dark clouds of coal smoke into the clear night air, Kawata noted its speed, the gentle breeze, and the unusual calmness of the water. He was not traveling for pleasure but on assignment as a newspaper reporter covering the escalating tensions between Japan and China, knowing that he might soon find himself in the thick of battle. His first dispatch declared that he was up to the challenge. Having previously "come under the revolutionary army's flag" during the 1891 Chilean Revolution, he had ... Read More

  • Anthropology, Opportunity, and Empire: Collecting Expeditions in Sarawak
           and the Philippines, 1898–1909

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: On November 21, 1909, Chicago Tribune readers would have opened their Sunday papers to see a hand drawn image of an Indigenous man and woman wearing loincloths and beads standing next to a pile of eight human skulls.1 The article, which described the new Philippines exhibit at the Field Museum, emphasized sensational representations of the Philippines as a land of savage headhunters in a likely attempt to draw visitors to the Museum.2 It recounted the death of one of the Expedition's collectors, William Jones, who had been killed while collecting objects in Luzon and included a description of displays that included "grewsome (sic) head baskets, ugly looking knives, daggers and head axes, three pronged wooden ... • Water, Bodies, Space: New Directions in World Environmental History

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Sometimes it is the sudden intrusion of new questions, and the unexpected perspectives they offer, into the field of World History which has galvanized efforts to push our work and teaching forward in new directions. What does the Ottoman Empire look like from the viewpoint of a marsh in southern Iraq' How could England's Charles II dream of improving his subject's physical health in eastern England by radically transforming the landscape in which they lived' What does an Indigenous place-name on a European colonial map signify, and what can that tell us about local ecologies' These are some of the inquiries posed by a new generation of environmental historians, and they speak to the potential for their works to ... • Piracy in World History ed. by Stefan Eklöf Amirell, Bruce Buchan, and
           Hans Hägerdal (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Conventionally, piracy has been defined as seafarers operating outside the laws of any sovereign power, referred to in Europe since the Early Modern period as "hostes humani generis," or "enemies of all mankind." Most histories of piracy take this as their starting point, incorrectly regarding piracy as a European concept that was applied to foreign mariners in the context of colonialism. This edited volume on piracy questions that assumption with twelve original essays that cover case studies of maritime violence and encounters in Europe, the Philippines, Indonesia, India, the Ottoman Empire, China, and Vietnam between 1500 and 1900. In their introduction, the editors write that their aim is to write a global ... Read More

  • The Creole Archipelago: Race and Borders in the Colonial Caribbean by
           Tessa Murphy (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: With this well-researched book, Murphy brings readers to an underexplored region of the Caribbean: the southeastern islands within the chain traditionally known as the Lesser Antilles. Murphy dubs the islands the Creole Archipelago, which she defines as "a chain of small volcanic islands, each visible from the next, that stretches 280 miles from Guadeloupe in the north to Grenada in the south" (p. 6). More than a physical space, though, the Creole Archipelago featured a diverse, even cosmopolitan, community that adapted, resisted, fled, fought, and integrated within their shared island string. By highlighting the persistent drive for autonomy among the islands' indigenous residents, enslaved peoples, and settler ... Read More

  • Iran and a French Empire of Trade, 1700–1808: The Other Persian Letters
           by Junko Thérèse Takeda (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Recently scholars have turned their attention to the impact Asia, and especially Persia and the Ottoman Empire, made in France prior to Montesquieu's Persian Letters.1 Junko Takeda's timely book takes off from this point in the early eighteenth century arguing that Persia continued to make a strong impact in France, shaping economics, military technology, and politics from the pre-Revolutionary era to Napoleon. Takeda unearths a truly global Enlightenment era in which Frenchmen watched events in Persia and responded, revealing the commercial and intellectual intertwining of Asian and European Empires.Takeda's method advances the field of global history by taking a microhistorical approach. She relates accounts of ... Read More

  • New World of Gain: Europeans, Guaraní, and the Global Origins of Modern
Economy by Brian P. Owensby (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In the past years, the study of economic ideas has been gaining ground among historians, and a number of innovative studies increased our knowledge about the economic concepts and debates which accompanied the gradual extension of global economic interdependence. Brian P. Owensby contributes to the growing field of intellectual history of economic ideas, exploring the cultural contact between Spaniards and American indigenous groups—which came to be known as Guaraní—between the sixteenth and the early nineteenth century, an account that highlights how their respective economic cultures changed in the course of their contact, due to creative adaptation to new circumstances as well as to unintentional ...
