  • A Short History of Feather Fans' Spread and Cultural Connotations: From
Bronze Age Africa East to China and West to Europe

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Although historians have known for a long time that the earliest feather fans come from Africa, the idea that feather fans originated in China persists in both popular and scholarly articles. Two other types of hand fans, woven flag fans and round screen fans, which entered commercial manufacturing later and will be considered in subsequent articles, similarly did not originate in China and yet are commonly imagined to have come from there. What is so compelling about this false story' The answer lies in the nature of the fans themselves. Although hand fans are inexpensively made and easily manufactured at home, the addition of cultural signifiers renders them profitable to commercial vendors. The cultural weight ... Read More

  • Breaking the Containment: Horse Trade between the Ming Empire and its
           Northern Neighbors, 1368–1570

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Through examination of the horse trade, this paper analyzes the maintenance of the tributary relations binding the Ming Empire with its northern neighbors. Horse was a strategic good circulating among the Ming and its northern neighbors. The Chinese forced the retreat of the Mongols and founded the Ming Empire in 1368, yet battles with the Mongols never ceased in the northern frontier. The Ming court wanted to import cheap horses to defray the costs of war with the Mongols. Horse trade was launched to satisfy this urgent need. The so-called tributary parties of the Ming, including the northeastern groups such as Jurchens and the Uriyangqad, the northwestern Tibetans, Korea, the oasis towns, and Central Asian ... Read More

  • Captive Colonizers: The Role of the Prisoners of War from Poland-Lithuania
and the Crimean Khanate in the Russian Subjugation of Eastern Siberia

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In the years 1552–1689, between the conquest of the Kazan Khanate and the conclusion of the Nerchinsk Treaty with China, the Muscovite state experienced a century and a half of unprecedented expansion, having reached the shores of the Pacific. The spatial growth of Russia in northeast Asia was hardly less impressive than the contemporary Iberian and Dutch maritime expansion into the southeast of that continent. Although the growth of the Russian Empire was often checked by local compromises,1 Russian conquests in northeast Asia have proved durable, having survived the twentiethcentury wave of decolonization and even the fall of the Soviet Union. In the pre-nationalist era, monarchs in Europe and beyond exhibited ... • Chains of Custody, Oceans of Instability: The Precarious Logistics of the
           Natural History Trade

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Half decade after his appointment as the Curator of the Australian Museum in Sydney in 1874, Edward Pierson Ramsay faced a logistical task of global dimensions. At the turn of the 1880s, Ramsay was preparing to send a substantial collection of specimens across the world to London for display at the International Fisheries Exhibition in 1883. Participation was a major chance to forge international links for the Museum and an opportunity to display and trade collections. The Exhibition, however, was also at the center of a massive logistical exercise that involved museums, governments, collectors, shipping agents, retailers, insurers, commercial dealers, and private individuals from many countries. In Sydney ... Read More

  • Abie Nathan and his Double-Edged Missions: The Transnational Humanitarian
and Human Rights Activist during the Nigeria-Biafra War

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Prior to the fall of 1968, the Nigeria-Biafra War failed to attract the global humanitarian and human rights campaigns it deserved. Although some of the global humanitarian organizations such as the International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC), Save the Children Fund, Oxfam Canada were operating in the different parts of the conflict zones, especially Biafra where the conflict-induced human suffering was profound and alarming, their operations were limited. This was due to the restrictive policies of the Nigerian government, including the "information blockade"1 on Biafra, and shortage of funds required to provide for the growing numbers of the starving victims of the war.2 Nonetheless, by the mid-1968, things had ... • Time in Maps: From the Age of Discovery to Our Digital Era ed. by Kären
           Wigen and Caroline Winterer (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Time leaves dust on every map. If we agree that maps depict time over a limited arc, never in the same way, one arrives at a quandary of loose social constructionism or relativism for their study. Conceptually as tools, however, maps are not reducible to calendars or clocks, atlases or almanacs. Maps show traffic and movement, change over time. They do not fix a person or a country's identity, or move time forward in a story of progress, mastery or conquest. Nor are they modern: maps are not all drawn to scale or with grids, not in the same manner. Time is a part of history, but history is just one variable. Time maps are constructs that represent the unstable; time can precede space; time can be out of place. ... Read More

  • Going the Distance: Eurasian Trade and the Rise of the Business
Corporation, 1400–1700 by Ron Harris (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: By the end of the sixteenth century, Eurasian trade had been vibrant for hundreds of years. Formerly at the fringes of an overlapping set of trading circuits, direct European entry into this set of markets began with the arrival of the Portuguese in the Indian Ocean at the end of the fifteenth century. By the end of the seventeenth century, however, this business ecosystem was dominated by the English East India Company (the "EIC") and its Dutch counterpart (the "VOC").Their trading and imperial activities would go on to have profound effects on culture, politics, and economic development in both Asia and Europe over the next several centuries, spawning a vast and contested literature. • Global History of Early Modern Violence ed. by Erica Charters et al.
           (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: A Global History of Early Modern Violence seeks to revise the project of global history by highlighting the place of violence in global processes. As Erica Charters, Marie Houllemare, and Peter H. Wilson note in their introduction, a regular—and fair—criticism of global history is a tendency to focus on exchanges at the expense of tackling strife. The explicit aim of this volume is then to address that troublesome lacuna, bringing together case-studies to show how violence was a vital part of how the early modern world was global. In this, the volume makes a major and important contribution to global history by insisting that we consider conflict as well as connections. This volume shows commitment to presenting a ... Read More

  • The Warrior, the Voyager, and the Artist: Three Lives in an Age of Empire
           by Kate Fullagar (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Scholars once separated the history of eighteenth-century Britain from that of its colonies, placing each in its own silo and paying relatively little attention to the linkages connecting them. This book argues in favor of connections. In an "experiment in New Biography," Kate Fullagar yokes the lives of three very different men to a meditation on what she calls "the moral legacy of empire" (p. 5). The three men are the Cherokee warrior-diplomat Ostenaco, who traveled to Britain in 1762; Joshua Reynolds, the portraitist who painted his likeness during the visit; and Mai, from the Pacific island of Ra'iatea, who went to Britain in 1774 and stayed two years, during which time he, too, was painted by Reynolds. Other ... Read More

  • Empire of the Senses: Bodily Encounters in Imperial India and the
Philippines by Andrew J. Rotter (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The British and Americans who colonized Asia in the latenineteenth and early-twentieth centuries often could not stand the sight and smell of those they colonized. Or, for that matter, the sound of their native tongues, the touch of their skin, or the taste of their food. They chafed (both literally and figuratively) from the heat and humidity of tropical climes. Conversely, colonial subjects often found themselves repelled by the odors and confounded by the habits of their rulers. Such sensory perceptions are the focal points of Andrew Rotter's fascinating comparative study of colonial India and the Philippines, Empire of the Senses. According to Rotter, Britain and the United States both took part in a project of ... Read More

  • Herbs and Roots: A History of Chinese Doctors in the American Medical
Marketplace by Tamara Venit Shelton (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In Herbs and Roots: A History of Chinese Doctors in the American Medical Marketplace, Tamara Venit Shelton provides a fascinating and gracefully-written account of social and cultural history of the United States through the Chinese herbal medicine's lens. The debate between modern biological medicine and traditional herbal medicine has been ongoing for centuries since modern science and technology began to transform human life and the two types of medicine competed in treating diseases and winning the hearts of patients. Given our current COVID-19 crisis, Shelton's book will no doubt attract a large audience interested in the history of medicine and immigration. But the book is actually about much more: racial ... • Visualizing Fascism: The Twentieth-Century Rise of the Global Right ed. by
Julia Adeney Thomas and Geoff Eley (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Between the late-1960s and the turn-of-the-century, scholars specializing in the history of interwar right-wing authoritarianisms and populisms set out to identify a "fascist minimum" (Ernst Nolte, 1968) or a "working definition" (Stanley Payne, 1996) for (lower-case) fascism. Such an "ideal type" would, as Payne famously put it, "describe what all fascist movements had in common without trying to describe the additional unique characteristics of each individual group."1 While some progress was made in identifying fascism's "generic" characteristics across the twentieth-century's various fascistic movements, political parties, and dictatorships, nearly all of the studies produced during the aforementioned decades ...
