  Abstract: The inaugural issue of Arethusa appeared in the autumn of 1968, with a lead article by Charles Segal, "Ancient Texts and Modern Criticism: Some Recent Trends in Classical Literary Studies" (pp. 1–25)—an auspicious beginning. It was Charles Garton who edited that volume and who would remain editor until spring of 1972 (5.1), when the editorship was taken up by J. P. Sullivan. In an editorial composed for that issue (5.1), Sullivan makes reference (p. 5) to an "early statement of editorial policy" that "stated the intention of fostering 'relevant studies in the promising borderland between the Classics themselves and anthropology, psychology, and sociology,'" adding: "This is a policy to which the present editor ...   Abstract: It is not often the case that one expects anything of significance to be communicated with a hiccup. One may be forgiven then for following A. E. Taylor in seeing Aristophanes' hiccups in Plato's Symposium (185c3–e5, 188e3–89a6) as an enjoyable, if ultimately empty, piece of "Pantagruelism" (1959.216). But this dismissal neglects the fact that Plato's dialogues are carefully and meticulously constructed—so much so that even a bout of hiccups is laden with meaning. The lesbian remains a kind of "ghost effect" in the cinema world of modern life: elusive, vaporous, difficult to spot—even when she is there, in plain view, mortal and magnificent, at the center of the screen. Some may even deny that she exists at all.These are the stories of two poems and of desires that have slipped or been let slide under some readers' radars. The poems are an erotic graffito found in a little house in Pompeii and an elegy by Tibullus.   Abstract: The modern arrangement of Alciphron's Letters (late second / early third century) ends with a pair of letters between the comic poet Menander and his lover, the courtesan Glycera (4.18 and 4.19).1 In the first, Menander writes to Glycera from the Piraeus to inform her that Ptolemy has invited him to come to Egypt.2 As Glycera seeks to reassure herself that Menander will not abandon her, she muses: "For what is Athens without Menander' And what is Menander without Glycera'" (τί γὰρ Ἀθῆναι χωρὶς Μενάνδρου; τί δὲ Μένανδρος χωρὶς Γλυκέρας; 4.19.5).
