  Abstract: Two passages from Greek literature, each dealing with ritual, exhibit unusual and isolated verbal semantics that have puzzled interpreters since the publication of their respective papyri texts in 1863 and 1933. Bringing the pair together for the first time, against a broader analytical background that embraces the study of Greek ritual and performance using comparative evidence, can clarify both problems.   Abstract: The relationship between surface and depth is one of the fundamental structuring principles of the modern western material imaginary.1 When we conceptually localize the true essence of things in their deepest recesses, the chief modes of response to surfaces involve casting aside their lingering allure, violently burrowing right through them, or allowing them to meld into the background.   Abstract: The earliest known literary treatment of Proserpina’s rape, the Homeric Hymn to Demeter, places the abduction on the “Nysian plain.”2 What is here a setting which is “vague and mythical” (Foley 1994.36) could be interpreted as being the Nysa in the east, at Caria in Asia Minor.3 In subsequent literary instantiations of the Proserpina myth, there were various candidates for the location of the abduction, including Attica, Crete, Oceanus, and Sicily.4 This article focuses upon Claudian’s late fourth century ce version of the rape story, the De Raptu Proserpinae.5 It is clear that the extant action of Claudian’s epic plays out in the west on Sicily, a choice of backdrop for the myth which dates back to at least ...   Abstract: In his Commentary on the Cratylus, Proclus offers a highly original but largely ignored interpretation of Tantalus.1 Proclus’s sophisticated account of the king in the treatise has received very little attention because the overwhelming preponderance of scholars investigating allegoresis in the Lycian philosopher understandably focus on his Commentary on the Republic, which is Proclus’s—sit venia verbo—“programmatic” work on the appropriate approach to Homer’s poetry and its perfect consonance with Plato’s philosophy.2 Accordingly, the purpose of this article will be 1) to discuss the historical and philosophical background of Proclus’s account of Tantalus, and 2) to show the novelty of his interpretation as put ...
