  Abstract: Arethusa has lost an irreplaceable member of its editorial board: David Konstan has died, succumbing to cancer on 2 May 2024. David had served on the board continuously since the winter of 1992, a tenure of thirty-two years and the longest in the journal's fifty-six-year history. Time and again David generously provided enthusiastic and invaluable expert assistance through the two years in which I have served as editor; I am confident that each of my predecessors in this role would say the same, dating back to Jack Peradotto's editorship, during which David joined the board.But David's affiliation with Arethusa began well before 1992.   Abstract: The seminal work of Michel Foucault and Peter Brown changed the understanding of late antiquity for the discipline of classics. Their interconnected writings (the personal links between the two scholars have recently been narrated by Peter Brown [2023.576–99]), demanded a focus on the sexual discourse of the era and on the models of philosophy and theology that underlay a transformed conceptualization of the body and sexuality (Foucault 1981a, 1981b, and Brown 1988).   Abstract: In a well-known passage from his treatise On My Own Books, the second-century physician and scholar Galen of Pergamum (ca. 129–post 216 ce) describes an encounter between two men browsing in a bookshop in Rome's artisanal Sandaliarius district.2 One had gullibly purchased a book attributed to Galen; the other, a well-educated man, has doubts.3 After reading only a few lines of the misattributed text, the educated man tears up the book's label (ἀπέρριψε τὸ γράμμα; cf.   Abstract: The prominence of Helen's self-blame in the Iliad has sparked a centuries-long inquiry into her agency and the poem's stance on the causes of the Trojan War. Notable readings depict Helen as seductive, manipulative, and responsible for the war and its disastrous effects. Such interpretations often overlook Helen's status as an abducted woman who lives in a war zone.   Abstract: I propose to read the mythic exemplum in Sappho's Tithonus poem through the lens of queer couple theory. Here I apply David Halperin's broad definition of queer as "whatever is at odds with the normal, the legitimate, the dominant" (1995.66). In the Greek mythic tradition, coupling between authoritative immortal gods and submissive mortal girls or boys is prototypical and therefore considered as the norm, whereas the Tithonus/Dawn couple becomes queer in their reversed gender roles and power dynamics according to many scholars.1 Moreover, if the heterosexual, male-dominant couple forms the legitimate family structure in the archaic Greek world, the queer then is definable as any form, entity, or structure that ...
