Optimization of scientific publications clustering with ensemble approach
for topic extraction

  Abstract: Abstract The continually developing Internet generates a considerable amount of text data. When attempting to extract general topics or themes from a massive corpus of documents, dealing with such a large volume of text data in an unstructured format is a big problem. Text document clustering (TDC) is a technique for grouping texts based on their content similarity. Partitioning text collection based on the documents’ content significance is one of the most challenging tasks at TDC. This study proposes the Bare-Bones Based Salp Swarm Algorithm (BBSSA) to solve the problem of TDC. In addition, to extract the topics from the clusters, an ensemble approach for automatic topic extraction (TE) is proposed. The proposed BBSSA and the ensemble TE approach are tested using six standard benchmarks and six scientific publishing datasets from top QS ranking UAE universities. BBSSA’s findings are compared with sixteen well-known techniques, including eleven metaheuristic algorithms, such as the Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA), Firefly Algorithm (FFA), Bat Algorithm (BAT), Harmony Search (HS), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Genetic Algorithm (GA), Multi-Verse Optimizer (MVO), Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO), Moth-Flame Optimization (MFO), Krill Herd Algorithm (KHA), SSA, and five clustering methods, such as K-means++, K-means, Density-based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise (DBSCAN), Spectral, and Agglomerative. The results of the ensemble TE approach are compared with those of seven well-known statistical methods, including Mutual Information (MI), TextRank (TR), Co-Occurrence Statistical Information-based Keyword Extraction (CSI), Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF), most frequent based keyword extraction (TF), YAKE!, and RAKE. According to the experiments, the BBSSA outperforms all other approaches and is exceedingly competitive. The results also reveal that for most datasets, the proposed ensemble TE strategy outperforms all existing TE methods based on external metrics. Thus, the ensemble TE approach can be seen as a supplement to the other methods.

  Abstract: Previous studies have investigated the use of positive/negative language in academic discourse, and have found a tendency toward using more positive language in academic writing. However, little is known about whether the features and dynamics of linguistic positivity vary across disciplines. In addition, the relationship between linguistic positivity and research impact deserves further evaluation. To address these issues, the present study investigated linguistic positivity in academic writing from a cross-disciplinary perspective. Based on a 111-million-word corpus of research article abstracts collected from the Web of Science, the study examined the diachronic trends of positive/negative language in eight academic disciplines, and explored the relationship between linguistic positivity and citation counts. The results demonstrated that the increase in linguistic positivity is a common phenomenon across the examined academic disciplines. In addition, hard disciplines showed a higher and faster-growing degree of linguistic positivity compared with soft disciplines. Last, a significant positive correlation was identified between citation counts and the degree of linguistic positivity. Reasons for the temporal dynamics and disciplinary variation of linguistic positivity were explored, and implications for the scientific community were discussed.

  Abstract: Abstract The field of science mapping has shown the power of citation-based clusters for literature analysis, yet this technique has barely been used for information retrieval tasks. This work evaluates the performance of citation-based clusters for information retrieval tasks. We simulated a search process with a tree hierarchy of clusters and a cluster selection algorithm. We evaluated the task of finding the relevant documents for 25 systematic reviews. Our evaluation considered several trade-offs between recall and precision for the cluster selection. We also replicated the Boolean queries self-reported by the systematic reviews to serve as a reference. We found that citation-based clusters’ search performance is highly variable and unpredictable, that the clusters work best for users that prefer recall over precision at a ratio between 2 and 8, and that the clusters are able to complement query-based search by finding additional relevant documents.

  Abstract: Abstract As research becomes more interdisciplinary, it is becoming more common for papers not to be published in their own disciplinary journals. This phenomenon is further amplified by the large number of multi-disciplinary journals in China’s social sciences, and prompts this study to explore the influence of discipline consistency between papers and published journals on citations. In this study, 476,327 Chinese papers in Economics, Law, and Library & Information Science published between 1998 and 2016 are collected from the Chinese Social Sciences Citation Index (CSSCI) as research samples. Descriptive statistics, Kruskal–Wallis test, Chi-square test, and regression analysis are used to compare the citation count and citation rate between papers published in own disciplinary journals, other disciplinary journals, and multi-disciplinary journals. It is found that papers whose discipline is consistent with published journals have a statistically significant citation advantage, which can be explained by the principle of least effort and scholars’ familiarity-based journal evaluation. According to the findings, this study also discusses some issues on the development of multi-disciplinary journals and the usage of citation indicators in academic evaluation.

  Abstract: Abstract Data sharing is an important part of open science (OS), and more and more institutions and journals have been enforcing open data (OD) policies. OD is advocated to help increase academic influences and promote scientific discovery and development, but such a proposition has not been elaborated on well. This study explores the nuanced effects of the OD policies on the citation pattern of articles by using the case of Chinese economics journals. China Industrial Economics (CIE) is the first and only Chinese social science journal so far to adopt a compulsory OD policy, requiring all published articles to share original data and processing codes. We use the article-level data and difference-in-differences (DID) approach to compare the citation performance of articles published in CIE and 36 comparable journals. Firstly, we find that the OD policy quickly increased the number of citations, and each article on average received 0.25, 1.19, 0.86, and 0.44 more citations in the first four years after publication respectively. Furthermore, we also found that the citation benefit of the OD policy rapidly decreased over time, and even became negative in the fifth year after publication. In conclusion, this changing citation pattern suggests that an OD policy can be double edged sword, which can quickly increase citation performance but simultaneously accelerate the aging of articles.

  Abstract: Video abstracts have been proposed as a tool to disseminate research through to social networks. However, its association with metrics of research dissemination has not been adequately investigated, particularly in the field of medical research. The aim of this study was to assess the association between video abstracts and citations, views and Altmetric Attention Score (AAS) of research papers. A cross-sectional study of research reports published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) over a 3-year period was conducted. An inverse binomial regression was used to assess factors associated with citations, views and AAS. The model included the presence of video abstracts as well as other independent covariables as potential confounding factors. 500 research reports were included in the analysis and 152 benefited from a video abstract. The median time from publication was 3.0 (2.2 to 3.6) years and 72% were RCTs. Research reports published with a video abstract were associated with an increase in citations (IRR 1.15), although this estimate came with uncertainty ranging from virtually no effect to a worthwhile effect (95% CI 0.98 to 1.35). There were also associated with a worthwhile increase in views (IRR 1.35, 95% CI 1.18 to 1.54) as well as with an increase in AAS (IRR 1.25, 95% CI 1.08 to 1.44). To conclude, video abstracts are associated with a worthwhile increase in the number of views of research reports. They are also associated with an increase in citations and social attention, although the association may be small.

  Abstract: Abstract Despite improvement in gender inequality in Australian science, the problem has not been fully addressed yet. To better understand the nature of gender inequality in Australian science, all gendered Australian first authored articles published between 2010 and 2020 and indexed in the Dimensions database were analysed. Field of Research (FoR) was used as the subject classification of articles and Field Citation Ratio (FCR) was used for citation comparison. Overall, the ratio of female to male first authored articles increased over the years, and this was true for all FoRs except for information and computing sciences. The ratio of single-authored articles by females was also improved over the study period. Females appeared to have a citation advantage, using Field Citation Ratio, over males in a few FoRs including mathematical sciences, chemical sciences, technology, built environment and design, studies in human society, law and legal studies, and studies in creative arts and writing. The average FCR for female first authored articles was greater than the average FCR for male first authored articles, including in a few fields such mathematical sciences where male authors outperformed females in terms of the number of articles.

  Abstract: Abstract With the remarkable increase in the number of scientific entities such as publications, researchers, and scientific topics, and the associated information overload in science, academic recommender systems have become increasingly important for millions of researchers and science enthusiasts. However, it is often overlooked that these systems are subject to various biases. In this article, we first break down the biases of academic recommender systems and characterize them according to their impact and prevalence. In doing so, we distinguish between biases originally caused by humans and biases induced by the recommender system. Second, we provide an overview of methods that have been used to mitigate these biases in the scholarly domain. Based on this, third, we present a framework that can be used by researchers and developers to mitigate biases in scholarly recommender systems and to evaluate recommender systems fairly. Finally, we discuss open challenges and possible research directions related to scholarly biases.

  Abstract: Abstract In this paper, we examine how a research institution’s social structure and the presence of academic opinion leaders shaped the early adoption of a scientific innovation. Our case considers the early engagement of mathematical economists at the Cowles Commission with John von Neumann and Oskar Morgenstern’s Theory of Games and Economic Behavior. We argue that scholars with administrative leadership functions who were not only scientifically but also organizationally central—in our case Jacob Marschak, the director of research at Cowles—played a crucial role in promoting the early adoption of the Theory of Games. We support our argument with a scientometric analysis of all acknowledgments made in 488 papers published from 1944 to 1955 in the two main research paper series at the Cowles Commission. We apply blockmodeling techniques to the acknowledgments network to reconstruct the formal and informal social structure at Cowles at the time. Our case study emphasizes the importance of formal and informal social structures and the research agendas of academic opinion leaders to explain the early engagement with and adoption of innovative scientific ideas. Studies of the early adoption of scientific theories can benefit from complementary perspectives on the role of academic opinion leaders and scientists in explaining theory adoption.

  Abstract: Abstract In this article we study and characterize the phenomenon of the hyperprolific authors, who are the most productive researchers according to a given repository in a specific period of time. Particularly, we are interested in investigating and characterizing a subset of such hyperprolific authors who present a sudden growth in the number of published articles and coauthors, as well as concentrate their publications in a few specific journals, what can be seen as an anomalous behavior. Using data collected from the DBLP repository and covering the last 10 years, we propose a set of discriminative dimensions (features) aimed at characterizing the behavior of hyperprolific authors, ultimately helping to identify anomalous ones. Moreover, using a strategy based on ranking aggregation to identify the most prominent anomalous authors, we demonstrate that the best dimensions to characterize such anomalous behaviors may vary significantly among authors, but it is possible to identify a clear subset of them who present such behavior. Our results show that the top-ranked (most anomalous) authors manifest a distinct behavior from the middle-ranked ones. Indeed, each one of the five most anomalous authors published more than 48 journal articles in 2021 while collaborating with more than 1,000 coauthors in their careers. Specifically, one of such authors published more than 140 articles in just a single journal.

  Abstract: Abstract In this study, we present an objective, replicable methodology to identify trendy journals in any consolidated discipline. Trendy journals are those most read by authors who are currently publishing within the scope of the discipline. Trendy journal lists differ from consolidated lists of top core journals; the latter are very stable over time, mainly reflecting reputational factors, whereas the former reveal current influences not yet captured by studies based on bibliometric indicators or expert surveys. We apply our methodology to identify trendy journals among 167 titles indexed in the Web of Science category of the Information Science & Library Science (LIS) research area. Our list of trendy journals represents the most influential journals nowadays in the LIS discipline, challenging to some extent the core LIS journal list and journal category lists ordered by citations (e.g., by the Journal Impact Factor). Our results show that Scientometrics is the journal that bears the most influence on current production when not corrected for journal size and that Quantitative Science Studies—a small, relatively new journal not yet assigned a Journal Impact Factor nor present on any list of core LIS journals—is the journal that has shown the most significant recent influence when controlling for size.

  Abstract: Abstract “Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls” is essential to reduce gender disparity and improve the status of women. But it remains a challenge to narrow gender differences and improve gender equality in academic research. In this paper, we propose that the impact of articles is lower and writing style of articles is less positive when the article’s first author is female relative to male first authors, and writing style mediates this relationship. Focusing on the positive writing style, we attempt to contribute and explain the research on gender differences in research performance. We use BERT-based textual sentiment analysis to analyse 87 years of 9820 articles published in the top four marketing journals and prove our hypotheses. We also consider a set of control variables and conduct a set of robustness checks to ensure the robustness of our findings. We discuss the theoretical and managerial implications of our findings for researchers.

  Abstract: Abstract We use data on research collaboration among 5,230 scholars in the University of São Paulo between 2000 and 2019 to understand how a network with high academic endogamy is structured, to identify if academic collaboration is more commonly found among those who share endogamy status, and to analyze if the likelihood of tie formation is distinct among inbred and non-inbred scholars. Results show growth of collaborations over time. However, ties between scholars are more likely to occur when endogamy status is shared by both inbred and non-inbred ones. Furthermore, such homophily effect seems to gradually be more influential on non-inbred scholars, suggesting this institution could be missing out on opportunities of exploring non-redundant information from within its own faculty members.

  Abstract: Abstract We analyse the relationship between downloads of electronic journals included in four big deal bundles subscribed to by public university libraries affiliated to two library consortia in Spain (Castile and León and Galicia) and citations of the same journals by researchers at these universities. Download data on the big deals analysed (Emerald, ScienceDirect, Springer and Wiley) were obtained from COUNTER Journal Reports 1, and citation data were obtained from the bibliographic references given in articles indexed in Scopus between 2010 and 2017. The results show that only a low percentage of the subscribed journals was used in the scientific output of the universities’ researchers, with values ranging from 15 to 50%, and that there was a strong correlation between the universities’ volume of scientific production and the percentage of cited journals. We also found a strong correlation between downloads and citations, which was higher in the case of universities with a higher scientific output.

  Abstract: Abstract The collapse of socialist Eastern Europe in 1989 deprived Cuba’s science system of its most important academic peers. To overcome this obstacle and increase its scientific productivity, Cuba drove scientific collaboration with countries in Europe and Latin America. This study explores the role of Cuban scientific collaboration with the U.S. in the absence of diplomatic relations between those countries. The results suggest that Mexico acts as a bridge for increasing scientific collaboration between Cuba and the U.S.—measured as the number of coauthored papers published in WoS and Scopus. When the number of papers co-authored by Cuban academics with their Mexican peers doubled, the number of articles coauthored by Cuban and U.S. scientists in Scopus grew 9.31 times \(2^{3.22}\) and 8.11 times \(2^{3.08}\) . in WoS. The findings support the hypothesis that scientific collaboration favors an increase in the productivity and scientific visibility of countries. Furthermore, the results suggest that scientific collaboration helps to lay bridges between science systems in the absence of diplomatic relations and even in the presence of political and economic hostility between them. Strengthening international scientific collaboration makes it possible for the science systems of developing countries to overcome limitations on resources and carry out cutting-edge research, and also to incorporate their scientists in mainstream research in the areas that promote their technological-scientific development.

  Abstract: Abstract International research collaboration (IRC) has been relevant for the development of national scientific systems. In Africa, given the limited resources devoted to research and development (R&D) activities and the crucial role that scientific knowledge generated through research activities can have in socioeconomic development, IRC may be an opportunity to strengthen scientific capabilities. While geographical, economic, political/governance, cultural, intellectual and excellence distance hampers IRC in other regions, we argue that economic and excellence distances actuate differently in Africa. We explored the impact of the variables above in addition to the information and communication technologies (ICTs), and social distances on the IRC of these countries. Using panel data for 54 African economies, our results show that economic distance fosters IRC while governance and excellence distances are non-significant. Past collaborations (one out of two proxies for social distance) and speaking the same language have the highest effect on IRC, and ICTs distance the lowest. The results have implications for science policy in Africa. For instance, we argue that science policies need to be adapted to each environment as the scientific landscape in each country is unique.

  Abstract: Abstract Science has become more collaborative over the past years, as evidenced by the growing number of authors per publication and the emergence of interdisciplinary research endeavors involving specialists from different fields. In this context, it is not trivial to quantify the individual impact of researchers. To address this issue, we evaluate the effect of the most productive collaboration tie (as measured by the number of co-authored papers) on the productivity and visibility metrics of established researchers. We analyzed the impact on the researcher’s metrics, such as the number of publications, citations, and h-index, when their co-authored works with their most productive collaborator were excluded from the analysis. A comprehensive analysis conducted utilizing over 243 million papers revealed different patterns of prolific collaborator influence across the major fields of knowledge. In formal and applied sciences, the impact of prolific collaborators on the visibility metrics of authors is substantial, even among those who are highly cited. These results have significant implications for stakeholders who are seeking to understand collaboration patterns and to develop measures of success that consider collaboration ties.

  Abstract: Abstract News outlets publicize scientific research findings that have not been peer reviewed yet, and they often do it with active contribution by the authors of the unpublished manuscripts. While researchers are aware of the importance of the peer review process and what it means to discuss findings before manuscripts are accepted for publication, the general public is not. It is imperative to ensure that researchers provide reliable scientific knowledge to each other and to the public, as well as to preserve reliance on the scientific process and peer review. For these reasons, researchers should be more cautious in communicating unpublished work to the public and more accurate about the status of the presented scientific information.

  Abstract: Abstract With the intention to evaluate a current h(fa)-index which considered the relative contribution of each author, Sebo P and colleagues selected senior hospital physicians from six college hospitals in Switzerland between 1 and 14 March 2020. Using Web of Science, the authors assessed the h(fa)-index of all physicians with acquired non-zero h-index. They applied Cohen’s kappa statistic to calculate the inter-rater agreement between the h-index and the h(fa)-index. We argue that the agreement between the results of the two metrics is disputed by Cohen’s kappa statistic. Therefore, we recommend that an additional appropriate statistical approach, the weighted Cohen’s kappa statistic, should be used in this study.
