  • Petrographic Characterization of Late Roman African Pottery from J.W.
Salomonson’s Surveys: 3. The Workshops of Henchir el Biar and Bordj el
           Djerbi

    • Authors: Carina Hasenzagl, Claudio Capelli
Abstract: This paper focuses on the petrographic characterization of African Red Slip Ware from the North Tunisian workshops of Henchir el Biar and Bordj el Djerbi surveyed by J.W. Salomonson in 1968. Binocular observation and thin section analysis have been combined to identify the micro-and macroscopic provenance markers of both workshops that lie within a short distance in the Mejerda Valley. The results of this research, in agreement with previous chemical studies, demonstrated that not only is it possible to petrographically distinguish the workshops of Bordj el Djerbi and Henchir el Biar from each other, but in most cases also from the neighboring workshop of El Mahrine, which generally shows finer fabrics. These data are particularly interesting as the three workshops form a homogeneous group in terms of typology and macroscopic characteristics. Moreover, the apparent petrographic and technological similarities between a few samples and some other not yet located ARS productions open t...

  • Some Remarks on the Entry of Bona Dea into the African Provinces, with a
           Glance at the Italic Documentation

    • Authors: Federica Gatto, Gian Luca Gregori
Abstract: Eight epigraphic documents show the presence of Bona Dea’s cult in the provinces of Roman Africa. The analysis of this corpus shows the identity of the worshippers and allows a contextualization of their religious behaviour. Some peculiarities observed in the African dedications encourage comparison with the Italic documentation.

  • Practicalities of Grief and Commemoration: Accounting for Variation in
           Cremation Practices in Africa Proconsularis

    • Authors: Jennifer P. Moore, Lea M. Stirling
Abstract: As the practice of cremation spread throughout Africa Proconsularis, several localities developed distinctive mortuary customs. Examining three commonly-recognized stages of ritual interaction at these graves (the cremation, the burial, and post-funerary visitations) and proposing a fourth (deposits made during construction), this study seeks to identify and explain regional and sub-regional variations. Factors included the community’s cultural background, the extent of its integration into trade networks and other external influences, and the nature of local industry and crafts that could contribute to equipping the rites and graves. The size of the population that used the cemetery was also significant, since high-use necropoleis might demonstrate more habituated behaviours than cemeteries used less frequently. Cremation burials from cemeteries in Africa Proconsularis display fluency in the “global” funerary vocabulary and practices of the Mediterranean, yet also demonstrate the i...

    • Authors: Yvan Maligorne, Arnaud Vaillant, Chloé Damay

  • Berbers, Barley and Bsisa

    • Authors: Elizabeth Fentress
Abstract: The article underlines the importance of barley in the ancient North African diet, looking at a specific contemporary food, bsisa. This is made from green barley, toasted, ground, and mixed with spices and water and oil into a sort of porridge. It constituted an important resource for a time of year when stocks of other grains might be running low. The porridge is made by rubbing the ground grain against the side of the bowl while water is added in a thin stream. It is suggested that the ARS form 91, which had a long series of predecessors in North African ceramics, was an ideal form for the making and consumption of bsisa. Wear analysis of some specimens seems to support this conclusion.
