  • Roma, Sepolcreto della via Ostiense: le pitture murali e la loro
           conservazione. Tecnica, modalità decorative, cronologia

    • Authors: Simona Pannuzi, Marina Marcelli, Cecilia Balsi, Carla Giovannone, Mauro Torre, Stefano Ridolfi
Abstract: Along via Ostiensis, near the St. Paul’s Basilica, an important part of a roman cemetery was digged up in 1917 during roadworks and now it is still visible. This funerary area, where the most common typology is a small familiar building (columbarium), was dated from the 2nd century B.C. to 3rd-4th century A.D. At the end of the archaeological survey, only a little part of the funerary area was restored, provided with a covering and opened to the public. Elegant paintings of natural and mythological elements decorate most of the tombs, in some cases also connected with stucco decorations, and they constitute one of the most significant testimonies of the funerary art in Rome. Actually, an interdisciplinary research is focused to the study of the painted decorations, with the analysis of the painting technique and the pigments used. Moreover, based on the study of the successive restorations carried out during the twentieth-century and actual conservative state of the funerary building decorations, the investigation of the degradation phenomena of these architectural surfaces is in progress, in order to the monitoring, the maintenance and the conservation of these important frescos.

  • I materiali di Villa Garzoni (Collodi)

    • Authors: Emma Cantisani, Fabio Fratini, Barbara Sacchi
      Pages: 28 - 47
Abstract: Villa Garzoni and its garden are an extraordinary example of 18th-century Tuscan taste and culture. They are located on the slope of a hill at the mouth of the Pescia di Collodi stream in the Pescia plain (northern Tuscany). The garden presents scenographic and surprise effects that are part of a single decorative ensemble of great stylistic coherence. The steeply sloping terrain influenced the planimetric organisation, which develops along a central axis of symmetry, with an arrangement of terraces. In this paper the results of a diagnostic campaign performed on the materials of the villa and garden are reported. Stones, mortars and plasters were identified and analysed according to a well-established chemical and minero petrographic approach. Local and imported stones, raw materials and technologies used for the preparation of mortars and plasters, materials used for decoration were identified. To plan the best restoration approach their state of conservation was assess.

  • Sistemi informativi dinamici a supporto della documentazione archeologica
           per interventi in emergenza

    • Authors: Sandro Parrinello, Giulia Porcheddu
      Pages: 48 - 65
Abstract: This paper analyses data archiving procedures carried out during emergency archaeological excavations. It proposes a model for developing an information system capable of streamlining both the survey practices and the management of the excavation site. The opportunity to digitally acquire what emerged during an archaeological campaign as well as ordering data stemming from the stratigraphic analysis in a single digital database has offered us the possibility to discuss the cataloguing systems used in emergency situations. This drove us to experiment with novel application protocols for digitally recording archaeological evidence. The aim of this research is to reduce the loss of information and create dynamic archives for knowledge. Archaeologists can fill in this digital result with their considerations and hypotheses, as well as creating a study platform directly accessible during the phase of excavation, thus combining 3D digital surveys with archiving systems.

  • Restauro in Accademia di San Luca: riflessioni intorno a una proposta di
Gaspare Salvi per il concorso scolastico 1840.

    • Authors: tiziano casola
      Pages: 66 - 77
Abstract: An unpublished document in the archives of the Accademia di San Luca bears witness to the proposal of a 'restoration' test addressed to students of theoretical architecture, on the occasion of the annual school competition in 1840. The reasons for the idea, consisting in the elaboration of a project for the restoration of the Temple of Mars Ultor in the Roman forum, are here traced back to the collapse of part of the Monastery of the Annunziata ai Pantani, which had developed over the centuries close to the remains of the temple, which had occurred the previous year. The competition outline, drawn up by architect Gaspare Salvi, certifies that at the time the building was to be demolished with a view to 'in style' completion of the temple, which was not carried out. Although promptly rejected, in its nature of an isolated case, Salvi's proposal contributed to the reflection on the idea of archaeological restoration in the academic training of young architects and to a greater definition of the thinking regarding the possibility of intervention on ancient monuments in the first half of the 19th century in Rome.

  • Digital documentation of the Franciscan Observance architecture in Umbria.
Preliminary surveys and analysis for conservation purposes

    • Authors: Stefano Bertocci, Federico Cioli
      Pages: 78 - 101
Abstract: This contribution focuses on one of the identified case studies of the Franciscan Observance architecture in Umbria, the convent of San Bartolomeo near Foligno (PG). It addresses the issue of heritage documentation methodology through integrated 3D laser scanner digital survey techniques and SfM/IM photogrammetry close range and UAV. The investigations aim at developing a preliminary diagnostic framework of the San Bartolomeo complex after the damage suffered in the 2016 earthquake in Central Italy. The research is part of the broader context of the three-year European project F-ATLAS – Franciscan Landscapes: The Observance between Italy, Portugal, and Spain, funded by the JPICH 2019 call. The Project aims at the census of the Franciscan Observance’s convents and their enhancement in a European dimension. The Project also tends to verify the state of conservation and the possibilities of a compatible development of reuse projects, trying to connect the building phenomenon within its territorial and cultural context.

  • Damage Risk Reduction using Indonesian Wooden Culture

    • Authors: Laura Pecchioli, Yulianto Purwono Prihatmaji
      Pages: 102 - 115
Abstract: Cultural Heritage can play a crucial role in fostering resilience by reducing vulnerabilities and providing precious assets for an affected region’s sustainable social and economic development during its recovery phase by attracting investment, creating employment, or providing renewable natural resources. Disaster Risk Management (DRM) strategies allow a systematic approach to identify, assess, and reduce disaster risks decreasing socioeconomic vulnerability. Extensive consultations with the different institutions involved in preserving and disseminating information often contribute to design mitigation measures that align the understanding of various risks among stakeholders and communities, particularly in risk monitoring and emergency response. This article shows a peculiar and exemplary context as that of Indonesia. We want to show that Indonesian wood, constructed following the vernacular tradition, is a source to reduce the risks in that framework. A brief introduction shows how disaster management in Indonesia’s plan is essential to protect the community and its tangible and intangible cultural heritage.
