  • Morphology of city layers as a resource for an urban tourism offer. An
integrated research tourism vision for Tirana.

    • Authors: Fabio Naselli; Miriana Palj, Cinzia Barbara Bellone, Fabio Andreassi
Abstract: This article presents the results of an integrated analytical survey conducted on the city of Tirana, aiming at a local feature-based meta-proposal, focused on developing an overall shared vision of the city’s layers and users. The study contributes to raising the scientific background related to a place-based tourism's offer, within both the city itself and the Mediterranean basin's cities - as it is a unique multicultural macro-region - rich in social-cultural-historical heritage layers and well-known touristic places. The scope of this research is to highlight the values of the city’s layered urban morphology, as it is crucial to develop a place-based urban tourism offer within its urban context. Furthermore, by stressing the importance as well of protecting and enhancing its own rich "human-scale character" and its peculiar stratification of social-cultural-historical legacies.

  • Survey and 3D modelling of underground heritage spaces with complex
geometry: surface optimisation for association with HBIM methodology

    • Authors: Andrés Galera-Rodríguez; Roque Angulo-Fornos, Mario Algarín-Comino
Abstract: The historic centres of many cities have interior underground cavities or empty spaces dating from different periods. This paper establishes guidelines for systematising and simplifying the collection of data from underground heritage spaces, with the ultimate aim of facilitating the management of the information obtained and encouraging the conservation and public appreciation of this type of heritage hidden beneath the surface of our cities. The case study selected is a Roman cistern belonging to the network of underground heritage structures in Carmona. The photogrammetric survey conducted presented an additional complexity due to the small size of the space and its underground location. As the next step in the research, a 3D model is created. Lastly, a set of optimised strategies specific is proposed to the unique nature of this type of heritage.

  • AURA_ A media device for new narration spaces in museum contexts

    • Authors: Alessandra Cirafici; Carla Langella, Orazio de Vita
Abstract: The long months of social distance to which the pandemic has forced us have certainly accelerated the idea that the re-mediation of the concept of distance in a digital horizon can open up new spaces of negotiation for many social and cultural practices in the future. But it has also, dramatically, highlighted the limits and risks contained in the very idea that the experience of the meta-universe can really do without the mediation of physical reality and human direct intervention. The reflections and design experience proposed here therefore aim to reflect on the role that the new technologies and traditional professionals are playing in relation with the phygital cultural experience. The idea of the contemporary museum is indagated, questioning, however, the quality of the 'relationship' between the work of art and the user and the ways in which design can respond creatively to the demand for cultural consumption by activating new processes of attribution of meaning.

  • Hypothesis of reconstruction of the Roman theater of Urbs Salvia

    • Authors: Irene Bassoli; Federico Fallavollita, Wladek Fuchs
Abstract: The modern city of Urbisaglia, Roman Urbs Salvia, features many traces of its ancient origins. One of the most noteworthy is the theater, dated at around 23 d.C. The article presents a new, hypothetical virtual reconstruction of the structure, which was carried out based on the recent research of the geometric framework used by Roman architects in design. The principal intention of the article is to demonstrate the methodology of the study, in the case of a monument characterized by poor state of preservation.

  • Collaborative flipped-classroom approach to effective lifelong learning of
           cultural heritage

    • Authors: Chafik Arar; Abdelouahab Belazoui, Abdelmoutia Telli
Abstract: Lifelong learning has recently emerged as an innovative learning strategy that aims to satisfy the individuals' desire for continuous and unrestricted learning. However, technological progress, especially mobile networks and their applications, has enhanced schooling conditions and made them more accessible. In that respect, this paper aspires to increase the participation level of learners by involving them in the production process of teaching content. In this context, a novel educational system called XPShar has been proposed as a client-server application enabling users to share content of cultural heritage. The system is based on integrating the principle of openness with the flipped classroom approach. Finally, the study focused on the benefits of embracing ICT for an effective learning process via openness and the right to access information.

  • Finding the real color-quantitative color examination and restoration of
           Chinese historical architecture

    • Authors: Yutong Jiang; Luke Li, Yihua Zheng
Abstract: This study incorporates quantitative color examination and measurement into the study of visual performance of traditional Chinese architecture. It provides an objective and scientific way for generating color-restoration drawings that either reflect the “original” or “current” state of the building by looking for the extreme chroma color and calculating the average color. This method reinforces people's understanding of the true appearance of historic buildings and makes it possible to compare the similarities and differences of color schemes between different cases on an open and standard ground. This paper is supported by the Chinese National Key Research and Development Program of China - Research and Demonstration of Key Technologies for Scientific Cognition and Ontology Protection of Ming and Qing Dynasty Imperial Building Construction Techniques, Project Approval No. 2020YFC1522401.

  • Digitizing and recovering the knowledge of traditional Chinese colour of
           the Nanjing brocade

    • Authors: Wensi Lin; Mengyue Mengyue, Jisheng Wang, Mengqi Li, Jing Chen
Abstract: Colour knowledge of Nanjing Brocade has not been systematically and precisely documented due to many difficulties. This paper presents a comprehensive research on literature, artifacts and expert experience to demonstrate the colour range of Nanjing brocade from the conceptual and visual perspectives. By text mining, the commonly used colours of Nanjing brocade have been collected. Then, a combined research of chemical experiments of natural dyes in textile fragments and traditional dyeing experiments finds out the specific materials used in the ancient China and what kind of colours are dyed by these materials. Finally, a perceptual evaluation by experts helped match the colour samples to terms and a colour specification in line with Chinese aesthetics has been developed. With internationally accepted LCh value, the specification will facilitate colour identification and application for researchers, producers, and designers.

  • Displaying Dante’s Divine Comedy miniated manuscripts in exhibitions

    • Authors: Marco Gaiani; Simone Garagnani, Michele Zannoni
Abstract: Ancient manuscripts are part of many collections belonging to historic libraries and museums: due to their fragile nature and to the difficulties to display most of their contents during exhibitions, their study is often complicated for scholars who also need generally special permissions to examine them, mostly for a limited time window. Beginning from these premises, this paper introduces the outcomes of the digital replication and presentation of three manuscripts related to Dante’s Divine Comedy, as proposed on a real exhibition, “Dall’Alma Mater al Mondo. Dante at the University of Bologna”, held in 2021. Some of the principles related to the production of their replicas and the fruition of their contents through dedicated applications targeted to visitors and scholars are presented, with care to the reproduction of details such as the ability to explore 3D replicas of detailed elected pages or to browse many of them on dedicated touch screens.

  • A complex Virtual Reality system for the management and visualization of
           bridge data

    • Authors: Francesca Savini; Adriana Marra, Alessio Cordisco, Marco Giallonardo, Giovanni Fabbrocino, Ilaria Trizio
Abstract: The management of infrastructural heritage is a central issue not only to research but also to governments wishing to conserve the state of artefacts and ensuring their safe use. The implementation of procedures for assessing the physical state of structures has increased after the recent catastrophic events causing extensive damage to national and international infrastructures. The results of the knowledge-gathering process are in the form of a quantity of data obtained using a multidisciplinary approach, and essential for defining operational procedures from a safety and conservation perspective. This paper deals with the digitization and management of heterogeneous data through Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) to engineering and architecture with a specific focus on historical bridges. The paper discusses the results of experimentation aimed at defining an information system based on Virtual Reality (VR) for data visualization and exploitation.

  • Impact of Urban Heritage on social values in historic urban precincts -
Public perception of the Kuttichira community, Kerala

    • Authors: Shahim Abdurahiman, Kasthurba A. K; Afifa Nuzhat
Abstract: Historic urban neighbourhoods endure rapid transformation due to fast-paced development proposals seldom considering the urban heritage values associated with the local community, such as the social, cultural and economic values. The study aims to examine the community perception of the impact of urban heritage on social values. The paper proposes a weighted contextual framework to maintain the social wellbeing of the community in historic urban precincts through a case study of Kuttichira. A framework constituting a set of social criteria that has an associational impact with the urban built heritage fabric was assessed and prioritized through a questionnaire survey on the perception of the Kuttichira community. The empirical results reveal relatively equal weightage across the gender groups, indicating the social impact's credibility within the community. The findings contribute to the practice of sensitive urban development catering to the community's social needs and assisting in policy-making.

  • Digital Heritage for Ephemeral Architecture: Celebrating Saint Rosalia in
           Baroque Palermo

    • Authors: Marcello Fagiolo; Fabio Colonnese
Abstract: The ephemeral architectural works built in Palermo to celebrate saint Rosalia are structures of great complexity and interest, conceived to compete and complete the permanent architecture and to project the city into a fictitious, theatrical, mythical, and sacralizing perspective. Often involving both the fields of Tangible and Intangible Heritage, some of the works made in the first feast of 1625 and in the processions of the early 18th-century are studied here into the methodological frame offered by the Digital Heritage. Based on historical textual and iconographical documents, the digital reconstruction of some of these structures is then used to arrange multimedia products and to provide a critical key for original considerations on the documents and the architecture pieces, as well.

  • 3D scanning for comparative analysis of manufacture and deterioration
tracking: a case study of the 18th century wax Venus de’ Medici

    • Authors: Emanuel Sterp Moga; Óscar Hernández-Muñoz, Alicia Sánchez Ortiz
Abstract: In recent years, 3D digital technologies have proven to be essential tools for professionals in the field of conservation and restoration of cultural heritage. This research presents the potential offered by structured light 3D scanners and the geometry analysis strategies carried out for the comparative study between the plaster Venus de' Medici of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando (Madrid) and the Anatomical Venus in wax of the Royal College of Surgery of San Carlos (Madrid), as well as the monitoring of the state of conservation. Using high-precision, high-resolution 3D morphology, the results obtained have been highly satisfactory, as it has made it possible to find the dimensional differences to the millimetre, offering a better understanding of the construction technique and the state of conservation in order to detect the evolution of the damage and to be able to act quickly.
