Abstract: When an annual scholarly journal reaches its fifteenth issue, it is time to celebrate the solidity it has gained from its constant perusal by readers, most of whom access it electronically and live outside the Catalan-speaking lands, although the content of our journal is equally useful for scholars from its geographic region. We continue to sendthe paper edition of the Catalan Historical Review to all the universities where Catalan is taught and others where it is not, as well as to the universities located in the Catalan-speaking lands and some in the Spanish state. We are carrying on our mission to offer overviews of the latest breakthroughs on historical topics related to the Catalanspeaking lands. The abundance of the historiography produced fully justifies this type of journal, where the bibliographies cited are as useful as the abstracts personally written by the authors of each article.

- The Archive of the Crown of Aragon. Seven hundred years of history

Abstract: The Arxiu de la Corona d’Aragó (Archive of the Crown of Aragon) was founded by King James II of Aragon in 1318 as a royal archive housed in his Barcelona palace, and it has existed continuously ever since then. This article presents its history over the course of these 700 years, with a special focus on the circumstances that led to its creation, and it explains its evolution within a broader historical context. This uninterrupted history of the Archive since its origins spans its evolution from an administrative archive at the exclusive service of the monarch to a historical archive open to research and a more general public today.

- The Archive of the Kingdom of Valencia (1419-2019). Six hundred years of
history

Abstract: The Arxiu Reial de València (Royal Archive of Valencia) was created in 1419 and was housed in the Palau Reial (Royal Palace). At first it was managed by an archivist appointed by the monarch, but in 1579 the profession of archivist was added as an assistant of the Master Rational (magister racionalis), and it depended on this institution until 1707. During the era of foralism, it housed the collections of the Cancelleria Reial (Royal Chancery), the Reial Audiència (Royal Court), the Master Rational and the Corts Valencianes (the legislative body of Valencia). After 1707, when the local regime in Valencia was abolished, the monarchs ordered the documentation from the abolished institutions to be assembled together. This did not actually occur until the nineteenth century, when the Royal Palace was demolished in 1810 and the archive was moved to the Casa Professa of the Jesuits. The archives of the Generalitat, the Governate, the Justices of the city of Valencia and the Batlia (Bailiff) were transferred there. In the twentieth century, the documentation from the Bourbon era was moved there, and in 1965 the Arxiu del Regne de València (Archive of the Kingdom of Valencia) was moved to its current location.

- Folk poetry and the projects to create a Catalan Folk Songbook

Abstract: Folk poetry, which originally meant folk songs, were a subject of interest and study by Romantic scholars. In Catalonia, the scholars Manuel Milà i Fontanals and Marià Aguiló i Fuster theorised on the concept and collected folk songs with a primarily literary interest. Based on modern postulates, the Orfeó Català promoted the collection of folk songs with a more musical than literary interest, and they disseminated these songs after developing careful harmonies. From the vantage point of folklore studies, Rossend Serra i Pagès worked actively to promote the need to create a Catalan folk songbook. All these efforts led to carry out the Obra del Cançoner Popular de Catalunya (Folk Songbook of Catalonia) project, promoted and financed by Rafael Patxot i Jubert.

Abstract: Quan una revista científica anual arriba al número quinze, se’n pot celebrar la consolidació gràcies a la continuïtat de la seva consulta pels lectors, la majoria dels quals hi arriben ara per mitjà de l’edició electrònica i són residents fora de l’àmbit dels països de parla catalana, encara que també el contingut de la nostra revista és igualment útil als estudiosos pertanyents a la mateixa àrea geogràfica. Continuem enviant l’edició en paper de Catalan Historical Review a totes les biblioteques de les universitats on hi ha lectorat de català i a d’altres que no en tenen, així com a les situades als Països Catalans i a algunes de l’Estat espanyol. Seguim el propòsit d’oferir balanços dels coneixements actuals de temes de la història dels Països Catalans.L’abundància de la producció historiogràfica justifica plenament la dedicació a aquest tipus de guies, en què la bibliografia citada és tan útil com la síntesi que personalmentduen a terme els autors de cada article.

- La sigil·lografia medieval a Catalunya i als territoris de la Corona
catalanoaragonesa : una primera aproximació a l’erudició i al
col·leccionisme (segles XVIII-XXI)

Abstract: El 2022, per celebrar el centenari de la publicació del segon volum de Sigil·lografia catalana de Ferran de Sagarra, la Secció Històrico-Arqueològica de l’Institut d’Estudis Catalans ha organitzat un col·loqui internacional, «Els segells medievals a Catalunya i a l’Europa mediterrània. Estudis comparatius», amb la intenció de reunir el primer balanç d’aquests estudis a Catalunya i als territoris de l’antiga Corona catalanoaragonesa des de la publicació d’aquesta obra i obrir perspectives de futur. Simultàniament, a Nàpols, organitzada per la Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II, una segona trobada estarà destinada a ampliar el marc geogràfic de les relacions de la Corona catalanoaragonesa en el camp de la sigil·lografia i a fer dialogar l’estudi dels segells medievals femenins amb altres disciplines històriques properes. És en aquest context que el present article ha estat escrit, per aixecar un primer balanç provisional d’erudits, estudis i col·leccions que demana ésser completat amb totes les aportacions que els lectors ens puguin fer.

- La pagesia catalana: sociabilitat, politització, mobilització i
ciutadania (1870-1939)

Abstract: El text que es presenta combina recerca i divulgació de llarg recorregut, en un format de vasos comunicants que es complementen per oferir una comprensió global. L’aportació analitza la configuració i les vicissituds de la pagesia durant la consolidació de les relacions socials capitalistes en el camp català (1870-1939) i els conflictes de la pagesia al voltant de la distribució de l’excedent agrari i l’«economia moral» camperola radicalment qüestionada pel capitalisme agrari. També s’analitza la formació de la pagesia catalana com a col·lectiu social, amb una identitat pròpia, mitjançant la sociabilitat, la politització i la mobilització que va convertir els pagesos en ciutadans, primer de fet i després de dret, en un llarg i complex procés que passa per l’adopció de formes diverses d’associació i sociabilitat al voltant de les cultures polítiques del republicanisme, l’anarquisme, el socialisme i el catolicisme.

- L’Arxiu de la Corona d’Aragó. Set-cents anys
d’història

Abstract: L’Arxiu de la Corona d’Aragó va ser fundat en 1318 pel rei Jaume II d’Aragó com a arxiu reial situat en el seu palau de Barcelona, i ha tingut des de llavors una existència ininterrompuda fins a l’actualitat. Es presenta la seva història al llarg d’aquests set-cents anys, amb una atenció especial a les circumstàncies que van propiciar-ne la creació, explicant-ne l’evolució en un context històric més general. Aquesta evolució porta a l’Arxiu sense solució de continuïtat des dels seus orígens com a arxiu administratiu al servei exclusiu del monarca fins a l’arxiu històric obert a la recerca i a un públic més general de l’actualitat.

- L’Arxiu del Regne de València (1419-2019). Sis-cents anys
d’història

Abstract: L’Arxiu Reial de València es va crear en 1419 i tenia la seu en el Palau Reial. En un principi fou gestionat per un arxiver nomenat pel monarca, però en 1579 l’ofici d’arxiver fou agregat a un ajudant del Mestre Racional, i va dependre d’aquesta institució fins a 1707. En l’època foral conservava els fons de la Cancelleria Reial, la Reial Audiència, el Mestre Racional i les Corts Valencianes. A partir de 1707, amb l’abolició del règim foral valencià, els monarques manaren reunir la documentació de les antigues institucions suprimides. La reunió efectiva es feu en el segle xix, quan es derrocà el Palau Reial en 1810 i l’arxiu es traslladà a la Casa Professa dels Jesuïtes. Allí es transferiren els arxius de la Generalitat, la Governació, els Justícies de la ciutat de València i la Batlia. En el segle xx es transferí la documentació de l’època borbònica i en 1965 l’Arxiu del Regne de València es traslladà a la seu actual.

- La poesia popular i els projectes de creació d’un cançoner
popular català

Abstract: La poesia popular, entesa en els seus orígens com a cançó popular, va ser motiu d’interès i d’estudi per part dels estudiosos romàntics. A Catalunya, els erudits Manuel Milà i Fontanals i Marià Aguiló i Fuster van teoritzar sobre el concepte i van recollir cançons populars des d’un interès predominantment literari. L’Orfeó Català, des d’uns postulats modernistes, va impulsar la recollida de cançons populars, amb un interès més musical que literari, i les va divulgar amb acurades harmonitzacions. Rossend Serra i Pagès, des de l’òptica dels estudis de folklore, va treballar activament per promoure la necessitat d’elaborar un cançoner popular català. Tots aquests esforçosvan conduir a la realització del projecte Obra del Cançoner Popular de Catalunya promogut i finançat per Rafael Patxot i Jubert.

- Mosaic from the Roman period in the Catalan Lands. An overview

- Mediaeval sigillography in Catalonia and the territories of the
Catalan-Aragonese Crown : An overview of scholarship and collecting
(eighteenth to twenty-first centuries)

Abstract: To celebrate the centennial of the publication of the second volume of Ferran de Sagarra’s Sigil·lografia catalana, in 2022 the History-Archaeology Section of the Institut d’Estudis Catalans is organising an international colloquium on Els segells medievals a Catalunya i a l’Europa mediterrània. Estudis comparatius, with the intention of creating the first overview of these studies in Catalonia and the territories of the former Catalan-Aragonese Crown since the publication of Sagarra’s book and to open up future prospects. Simultaneously in Naples, a second gathering organised by the Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II will be aimed at expanding the geographic framework of the relations of the Catalan-Aragonese Crown in the field of sigillography and to bring the study of mediaeval seals into dialogue with other related historical disciplines. This article was written within this context, in an aim to provide an initial provisionalaccount of scholars, studies and collections, which should be completed with any further contributions that readers can add.

- The Catalan peasantry: Sociability, politicisation, mobilisation and
citizenship (1870-1939)

Abstract: Long-term research and communication are combined in this text in a series of individual units that band together to provide an overall picture. The text analyses the configuration and vicissitudes of the peasantry during the period in which capitalist social relations were being forged in the Catalan countryside (1870-1939), conflicts were raging over the distribution of the agricultural surplus and the peasants’ ‘moral economy’ was being radically questioned by agrarian capitalism. It also describes how Catalan peasants became a social group with an identity of its own through sociability, politicisation and mobilisation, which made the peasants citizens, first de facto and then de jure, in a long, complex process that involved various forms of association and sociability around the political cultures of republicanism, anarchism, socialism and Catholicism.
