  • El megalitisme a Catalunya: una breu síntesi

    • Authors: Josep Tarrús i Galter

    • Authors: Josep Maria Salrach

           pianomania

    • Authors: Estel Marín, Oriol Brugarolas
Abstract: En l’últim quart del segle xix, el piano s’havia convertit en un fenomen cultural, social i comercial de primer ordre i es trobava profundament arrelat en la societat catalana.

  • Megalithism in Catalonia: A brief overview

    • Authors: Josep Tarrús i Galter
Abstract: The study of megalithism in Catalonia, especially southern Catalonia (south of the Pyrenees), has changed considerably in the past four decades (1980-2020) thanks to several extraordinarily important excavations. They include the dolmen in Els Reguers de Seró (Artesa de Segre) and the menhir in El Pla de les Pruneres (Mollet del Vallès), both of which yielded heretofore unseen engravings, and most importantly the long-term campaigns focused on specific regions, such as the Alt Empordà, Tavertet (Osona) and, more recently, Maresme-Baix Vallès. Also worth noting is the work done on the western dolmen region, such as in Odèn (Solsonès), and the new excavations and studies on underground Neolithic cists from the Solsonian (Solsonès), which have now been included in megalithism in Catalonia, a much more complex, long and varied period than we imagined back in the 1970s. Indeed, the timeline of Catalan megalithism currently stretches from the early middle Neolithic (4500 BC) to the onset of the Bronze Age (1800 BC), that is, more than 2500 years through Neolithic, Chalcolithic and Bronze-Age cultural groups which shared the custom of burying their dead in more or less monumental stone graves, their hallmark. Alongside the graves, these recent decades have also finally revealed some of the settlements where their builders lived, such as the one in Ca n’Isach (Palau-saverdera, Alt Empordà); new menhirs and sites or cromlechs consisting in menhirs or built around menhirs near the habitat areas have been discovered; and new megalithic statuary, such as the one from Ca l’Estrada (Canovelles, Granollers). These are similar to the megalithic world in southeast France, while also enriching the known megalithic art records here in Catalonia, which until now were primarily centred around schematic anthropomorphicand geometric engravings in some megalithic graves in the Alt Empordà/Roussillon/Conflent.

  • Catalunya carolíngia and the public nature of the great domain according
to legal documents from the 9th and 10th centuries

    • Authors: Josep Maria Salrach
Abstract: With the publication of all Catalan documents prior to the year 1000 in Catalunya carolíngia, the research into this period is now set to move forward on many fronts. This article shows this via a study of legal documents which shed light on social groups and their conflicts and reveal how the rulers used the villas and control over the public properties and rights in them to organise the government, capture the surplus and create the great domain that was the forerunner to the seigneuries.

  • The personal memoir in the Catalan lands (16th-19th centuries)

    • Authors: Òscar Jané
Abstract: The written tradition in southern Europe becomes more than just a category when we examine personal writings from the Modern Age. They are the writings of an entire society, one that is mostly prosperous but both urban and especially rural, whose authors set downtheir personal memoirs primarily to understand their everyday lives and the events that were affecting society, both individually and collectively. If we compare them to the rest of Europe, Catalonia and all the Catalan lands conserve an important number of memoirs byprivate individuals, along with others that merit special attention because of either their content or the way they can be used.

  • The culture of the piano in Catalonia (1788 -1901): On the emergence of
           pianomania

    • Authors: Estel Marin, Oriol Brugarolas
Abstract: By the last quarter of the 19th century, the piano had become a prime cultural, social and commercial phenomenon and was deeply rooted in Catalan society. Proof of this is the increase in piano manufacturing and the consumption of piano music, the Catalan public’s ready access to the repertoire, the consolidation of piano instruction and the massive presence of this instrument in concert halls, universal expositions, cafés, athenaeums, casinos, theatres and private salons. This article provides new information outlining the process by which the piano took root and spread from its arrival in Catalonia in the last quarter of the 18th century until the late 19th century, when it had become the most popular, iconic instrument, as evidenced by the emergence of internationally renowned pianists like Tintorer, Granados and Albéniz. This study encompasses references to piano builders and vendors such as F. Bernareggi and M. Guarro, shops that sold scores like F. España, performers and instructors like J. B. Pujol, instructional materials and centres that taught music, as well as the public and private spaces committed to welcoming the instrument’s sound. This information confirms and reveals the profound development of piano activity and culture in 19th-century Catalonia.
Keywords: 19th-century piano, socialisation, teaching in Catalonia, musical culture, piano industry and trade.

Abstract: Catalan Carlism was one of the most prominent versions of European anti-liberalism and counter-revolution. This article delves into a debate on the traditional and/or modern nature of the social movements; the relationship between religion, politics and identity; the impact of the civil wars on the construction of nation-states; and the exercise of power and violence. In a context of factories and workers, Carlism built the longest insurrectional guerrilla culture in all of Europe and became the theatre of operations of the “international white”.

  • Mercè Rodoreda, the most translated author in Catalan fiction

    • Authors: Neus Real
Abstract: Mercè Rodoreda is the most translated author in Catalan literature. La Plaça del Diamant, which has been translated into 37 languages in dozens of different translations, places her ahead of such internationally famous fiction writers as Jaume Cabré and Albert Sánchez Piñol. This symbolic novel of the human condition, hailed by critics and beloved by a diverse array of readers, is particularly representativ of the author’s literary talent and ambition and can be considered a major 20th-century classic thanks to its extraordinarily high quality.
