He had begun his career as a medievalist, completing his D.Phil. at Oxford in 1969 with a study of the unique Bolton Priory account-book (‘The Bolton Compotus’) of 1286–1325. In 1975, after lecturing in medieval history at the University of Manchester for six years, he jumped several centuries in his research interests to work on twentieth-century Germany, since when he has published extensively on German wider European history.
