Los patrones de estilización y esquematización supondrían el uso de códigos visuales sobreentendidos, basados en convenciones socialmente establecidas y aceptadas.ABSTRACT: The processes of stylization and schematism, which suppose a simplification and alteration of the figured motifs, have been scarcely studied in the pre-Columbian art of the Lowlands of South America. This work aims to delve into these mechanisms through the analysis of a sample of 34 figurative ceramic append ages from the Las Tejas San Nicolás 1 site (Entre Ríos province, Northeast Argentina). Methodological criteria are provided that allow discussing these processes in three-dimensional representations, which in turn helps to taxonomically identify the simplified zoomorphic motifs. From the analysis carried out, it appears that birds of prey constitute the most represented animals in the site, registering an emphasis on the beak-head unit, which acts as a synecdoche of the figured animal. Stylization-schematization patterns would imply the use of understood visual codes, based on socially established and accepted conventions.

The relationship between culture and astronomy is an emerging field of study that has expanded our understanding of the importance and use of the sky among different social groups. In this paper we explore the links between these two realms that were established by the inhabitants of the La Paz valley (Bolivia). By examining local wak'as (sacredplaces) and colonial churches (16th to 18th centuries), we identified possible visual relationships between Christian churches and shrines, wak'as and celestial phenomena. This paper presents the results of our analysis of church and shrine altar placement in relation to socially significant spaces for the indigenous population. We furthermore show that their orientation is aligned with certain celestial events, including sunrise, sunset and moonset on specific dates, which may have coincided with indigenous celebrations and religious rites, as well as with the calendar of feast days imposed by the Spanish colonial rulers.

Based on formal and compositional analyses of the rock art sequence of the Real Grande 3 (rg3) rock shelter, the authors propose that the site was used recurrently between ca. 5000 and1500 b . Taking into consideration its location in an area of highland ravines (4000 masl), its proximity to a freshwater spring and year-round watercourse, its relationship to nearby sites with different functions, and the absence of occupations in the stratigraphic record, the rock art representations are interpreted in light of a series of Andean ethnographic sources associated with pastoralist practices and ceremonies propitiating camelid fertility.

The site is situated at the summit of Cerro Los Fierros, at 1200 masl, near the town of Las Carditas, about 7 km from the urban center of Andacollo (Coquimbo region, Chile). Through the formal analysis of intrinsic attributes of the existing rock art, the authors were able to identify the chronological- cultural periods during which these expressions were produced, and which human groups created them. The analysis yielded a substantial quantity of designs produced in historical times, which until now had not been documented nor recognised, and which correspond mainly to motifs known as cattle brands.

Both sites have paintings that correspond to the complex geometric abstract tendency, also known as the fretwork style. In this work, we proposed examining the intersubjective variation in the rock art's coding and classification, given its importance in the quantification of motif types. The differences and similarities between these sites are thus analyzed in terms of the types of motifs present and discussed in a regional context. The quantitative importance of the framed motifs and the presence of stencil-masking at the Las Tres Marías site is also discussed.

Otros aspectos se relacionan con la construcción significativa de determinados lugares, paisajes y vínculos territoriales, de identidades colectivas y de roles personales, y también eventuales relaciones entre grupos originarios y forasteros.ABSTRACT: Results of the first archaeometallurgical research in sierras de Córdoba are presented, based on the compositional analysis of a set of metallic pieces and the distribution of metal ores, for the purpose of discussing local and extra-local production. The observed attributes of the contexts in which the pieces were found are consistent with their associations with other types of artifacts. Other evidence examined includes the possible iconographic representation of metal pieces in rock art and portable art, as well as documentary references from the time of the Spanish conquest. The possibility of an initial stage of extra-local production and a localfinishing stage links these objects with the emergence of long-distance networks that encompassed communities in central Argentina towards the end of the pre-Hispanic period. Other aspects analyzed include the construction of meaning in relation to certain places, landscapes, and territorial ties, collective identities, and personal roles, as well as possible relations between indigenous groups and outsiders.

This paper characterizes the techniques and morphologies of a newly found set of rock engravings recorded in the Pali Aike volcanic field (Province of Santa Cruz, Argentina), composed by the representation of gua nacos with different morphologies. These designs are contextualized within the variety of rock art motifs previously recognized in the area and assigned to the Río Chico style, comprised mainly of painted geometric abstract designs. The variability in the design of engraved guanaco motifs is described by the morphology of the body, neck and leg, execution technique, orientation, representation plane, and dimensions, among others. A discussion follows on the manufacturing process or constructive design standards and, finally chronological estimates are proposed based on regional comparisons, foreseeing that this set of representa tions could correspond to the earliest rock art of southern Patagonia (ca. 5000 bp).

    • Abstract: ABSTRACT: This article first discusses who is mortal and who is immortal in Teotihuacan art, then identifies a type of high-ranking character whose iconography suggests they were part of a group that was under the protection of the Butterfly Bird God. These are called Lords of the Butterfly Bird God because that is how we see them in different contexts, in life bearing insignia of the elite, and in death in the form of mortuary bundles. These figures also appear with headdresses bearing images of the Butterfly Bird God's temple.
