  • Travelers from Murom, Briansk and Polotsk in Lucca (On Previously Known
and Newly Discovered Old East Slavic Inscriptions on the Walls of St.
           Martin Cathedral)

    • Authors: Savva Mikhailovich Mikheev
      Pages: 5 - 24
Abstract: In the 1970s, four Cyrillic inscriptions were discovered on the walls of St. Martin Cathedral in Lucca. They are etched on a marble block reused as an architrave in the 13th century. Two texts, including one deeply embedded and noticeable inscription, were first identified as Old Russian, while another was attributed to a speaker of a dialect of Serbo-Croatian. This article gives a new edition of the inscriptions on the architrave, with a revised reading. In particular, the inscription that had been considered Serbo-Croatian was ascertained to be an autograph of a pilgrim from Briansk. The presence on the architrave of three graffiti indicating the travelers’ cities of origin, namely Murom, Briansk, and Polotsk, testifies to this group of inscriptions having been left by pilgrims travelling as an organized group. Three other brief Cyrillic graffiti were discovered recently on a marble block of the portico of the same cathedral. The photographic images of these three graffiti are also published in this article. The paleography, orthography, language and location of the inscriptions indicate that they were left by pilgrims who came from Rus in the 12th or early 13th century.

  • Andrej and Matvej Frjazin: the First Italians in Moscow

    • Authors: Alexandr Vladimirovich Lavrentyev
      Pages: 25 - 44
Abstract: The arrival of Italian architects and masters of art and other skills in the Grand Duchy of Moscow in the second half of the 15th century, and the businesses of the “Frjazins” in Moscow and other cities, make up a bright page in the history of Italian-Russian relations. However, it is not common knowledge that the first Italians came to Moscow a century earlier. Between 1363 and 1389, the Grand Duke Dmitrij Ivanovič gave a charter for hunting to a certain Andrej Frjazin. According to the charter, Andrej Frjazin’s predecessor was his uncle, Matvej Frjazin, who arrived in Moscow during the great reign of Dmitrij Ivanovič’s grandfather, Ivan Danilovič Kalita, between 1328/1331 and 1340. The businesses of the uncle and nephew in the Arctic North region were encouraged by the grand dukes of Moscow and carried out with their financial participation. Apparently, Matvej and Andrej Frjazin had trading relations with the Venetian trading post Tana, and they were likely not the only Italian merchants in Moscow in the 14th century. Among the citizens who defended Moscow from the attack of the Tatar troops in the summer of 1382, Russian chronicles mention a certain cloth merchant, Adam, who was most likely an Italian, and who could have had some trading relations with the Genoese colony of Kafa in the Crimea.

  • Towards the Poetics of the Early Mandelštam. Ja v chorovod tenej: an
           Analysis

    • Authors: Boris Andreevič Uspenskij
      Pages: 45 - 56
Abstract: Mandelstam’s poem is divided into two opposing parts, in terms of content and style; they are united by the same lyrical subject. These two parts correspond to two parallel narrative plans. In the beginning, the unreal, afterlife world (the world of shadows) is presented, and then the earthly, real world. The first part describes the lyrical subject’s transition from being to non-being; the second part speaks of the life he has left behind which at the same time continues for him. The analysis of the poem leads to the conclusion that the world of shadows is treated by the poet as an Elysium of names, i.e. poetic words. It is a special reality created by poetic language. This poem appears as an illustration of Mandelstam’s early theoretical work on poetic language.

  • The Dalmatian Motifs of Miroslav Krleža: Space, Culture and Conflict
           in the Borderlands

    • Authors: Maciej Czerwiński
      Pages: 57 - 73
Abstract: The aim of this article is to deal with the disputable role Dalmatia played in the Croatian-Italian-Serbian borderlands, referring to the foremost Croatian and Yugoslav writer Miroslav Krleža. Although he is mostly associated with the Croatian North, i.e., historical Croatia-Slavonia, called sometimes the Panonian cultural complex, his engagement in the discourse of Dalmatia after World War Two cannot be underestimated. In the period 1950-1951 Krleža prepared two exhibitions of medieval art (one staged in Paris as L’art médiéval Yougoslave and the other in Zagreb as Zlato i srebro Zadra) and wrote two introductions to their catalogues. In them, he builds a concept of a separate “South Slavic civilisation” that “negates” the bipolarism of Roman-Byzantine competing cultural models (Slavia Romana vs. Slavia Orthodoxa, according to Picchio). Referring to the spatial approach to literature, I attempt to situate the post-war Yugoslav discourse, radically confrontational and militaristic, within historical antagonistic discourses (Croatian-Italian-Serbian).

  • The Apophatic Theology and the Sacred in the Poetry of Dmitrij Prigov

    • Authors: Alice Bravin
      Pages: 75 - 95
Abstract: The article considers the poetic production of Dmitrij Prigov, one of the most prominent representatives of Moscow Conceptualism, and focuses on the references that can be found in Prigov’s works to the apophatic or negative theology of Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite, one of the early Eastern Church Fathers. Through several examples, taken from cycles of poems from the 1970s and 1990s, the article investigates Prigov’s poetry through the lens of apophaticism and explores formal experimentations as well as stylistic strategies related to apophatic rhetoric. Theological, philosophical and sacral models are detached from their original context and used by the artist in a very unconventional way. Moreover, in the apophatic tradition Prigov discovers ideas that are fully applicable to his own understanding of poetry. The essay also discusses the relationship between art and religion in Prigov’s view and his idea of the sacred in art.

  • Tangibility of Time in the Prose of Aleksander Jurewicz

    • Authors: Olga Pańkowa, Herman Pańkow
      Pages: 97 - 114
Abstract: The article is focused on the model of artistic time in the works of Polish writer Alexander Jurewicz: Lida (1990), The Lord Does Not Hear the Deaf (Pan Bóg nie słyszy głuchych, 1995), The True Ballad of Love (Prawdziwa ballada o miłości, 2002), Ashes and Wind (Popiół i wiatr, 2005), and The Day Before the End of the World (Dzień przed końcem świata, 2008). Novel-collage Ashes and Wind is considered as a key work that sums up the writer’s reflections. Jurewicz crosses temporal layers, memories of the past, and refracts vignettes from childhood onto artistic reality. Replicating the past contributes to a fuller definition of one’s own identity. The article shows the interpretation of time by a writer who ruminates on the existence of a person in time and in discord with it, on the openness and tightness of the temporal frame, as well as the timeless nature of sacralizing the space of his home and childhood.

  • Morphophonological Innovations in New Speakers’ Kashubian

    • Authors: Maciej Bandur, Robert Borges
      Pages: 115 - 140
Abstract: New Speakers of minority languages are a special case which gives us a unique glimpse into variation and change. In such cases, language change at an accelerated pace tends to lead to profound changes in the structure of the language. Such developments are observable in Kashubian, a minority Slavic language spoken in East Pomerania. For the purpose of this study, spoken data consisting of responses to video stimuli was collected from a group of Kashubian speakers. Chosen morphophonological developments were analysed, especially repatterning and vowel substitution in nouns and verbs, as well as phonemic mergers and their consequences for the morphological structure.

  • Bilingualism and Translation: A Teaching Proposal

    • Authors: Monica Perotto
      Pages: 141 - 157
Abstract: In Italy the teaching of translation as a specific skill for bilingual speakers is normally not included in the programs of Russian special schools, the so-called subbotnie školy, where the development of language skills (especially listening, writing and grammar accuracy) in heritage speakers generally takes top priority. As already pointed out in other works (Perotto 2020, 2022), the activity of translation exerts an important influence on the cognitive development of the child, especially if bilingual. It helps him/her not only to differentiate and develop two parallel linguistic and cultural systems, but to approach them with a greater metalinguistic and cultural awareness. On the basis of translations made by bilingual participants to the international Cultural Bridge competition, Russian-Italian an Russian-English parallel corpora were created for the analysis of translation difficulties of heritage speakers living in Italy and USA. These difficulties will be analyzed separately or comparatively on the Sketch engine platform, providing some basic indications for a more targeted teaching of translation. The use of corpora can be an important teaching tool to improve heritage speakers’ linguistic competence and translation awareness.

  • Russian Symbolism in Italian Studies (1994-2022)

    • Authors: Claudia Criveller
      Pages: 163 - 179
Abstract: This paper provides a survey of Italian critical studies on Russian Symbolism and its reception in Italy over the last thirty years (1994-2022). The paper reconstructs the evolution of this tradition through the analysis of three main streams: 1. works on literary theory and philosophy 2. the study of the ‘Italian’ text on the basis mainly of archival documents and biographical texts, and 3. the study, based on comparisons and parallels with other literary movements, of Russian Symbolism as a supracultural and supranational movement. In the final part, the paper proposes an overview of current research perspectives on the topic.

  • Thirty Years of Studies on Russian Emigration to Italy

    • Authors: Bianca Sulpasso, Laura Piccolo, Agnese Accattoli
      Pages: 181 - 198
Abstract: In the last thirty years, studies dedicated to Russian emigration have experienced significant growth. The fall of the Berlin Wall first, and later the collapse of the USSR, allowed scholars to freely access archives, describe and reconstruct the phenomenon from qualitative and quantitative perspectives, and form research groups and networks both nationally and internationally. This article focuses on Italian studies dedicated to Russian emigration in Italy, which, over the past thirty years, have also seen a notable flourishing thanks to the contributions of individual researchers and research groups. Russian studies in Italy have thus aligned with similar initiatives in other countries, developing international projects and research lines in various fields.

  • Russian Literary Theories in Italy: Translations and Research (1991-2023)

    • Authors: Giuseppina Larocca
      Pages: 199 - 215
Abstract: This article provides an overview of the state of translation and research on Russian literary theories published in Italy from 1991 to 2023. Particular attention is given to the wide range of perspectives and activities put forward by national literary criticism, especially the role played by Italian journals specialising in Slavic studies such as “Studi Slavistici”, “Europa Orientalis”, “Russica Romana” “Ricerche Slavistiche”, “Slavica Tergestina”, “AvtobiografiJA”, “eSamizdat”, and publishers such as “Bompiani”, “Einaudi”, “Laterza”, “Marsilio”, “De Donato”. Notably, some journals, for instance “Strumenti critici”, “Enthymema”, “Letterature e Letteratura”, “LEA”, “Kamen’”, “Tincontre. Teoria Testo Traduzione” and “La parola del testo”, have shown a significant engagement with Russian literary theories, despite not being devoted to the field of Slavic studies. By taking into account the theoretical trends of the last three decades, I demonstrate that a great deal of consideration has been given to OPOJAZ, the Moscow Linguistic Circle, the so-called “Bakhtin Circle” and the gachn (State Academy of Art Studies), with a renewed interest in literary personalities such as Michail Petrovskij, Grigorij Vinokur, and Lev Pumpjanskij, but also in key figures linked to sociology of literature such as Boris Arvatov.

  • The Study of Music Theatre in the Russian Context: Italian Contributions
           and the Current Debate

    • Authors: Anna Giust
      Pages: 217 - 228
Abstract: The two main narratives that coexist in Russian musicological literature – notably in the field of opera – fall within the branches of russkaja and zarubežnaja muzyka. The first is inward-looking, self-referential, aiming at enhancing the peculiarities of the original, peculiar, and autochthonous contribution to Russian musical culture; the other studies Western music and its evolution separately from the previous one. This approach differs from Western scholarship, which today tries to integrate the Russian musical phenomenon into the global horizon. While this difference can be explained through historical reasons, much remains to be done regarding communication between scientific communities and the coordination of efforts made to study sources that are still too dispersed and difficult to submit to an overall view. Observing the current state of research, my contribution highlights potential directions in the frame of Slavic studies, such as the reception of Western opera in Russia, the mobility of musicians and musical assets, the reception and evolution of aesthetic thinking, and the vocabulary with which this was expressed, particularly in the imperial era.

    • Authors: Alessandro Achilli
      Pages: 229 - 239
Abstract: This contribution reflects on the state of comparative studies devoted to East Slavic literatures in Italy. Between the end of the 20th and beginning of the 21st century, Italian scholars of Slavic studies and the editors of Italian journals have made a number of interesting proposals on the subject. However, hyper-specialization has often hampered efforts to put theory into practice. I foreground some of these important methodological contributions by Italian scholars on comparative Slavic studies and discuss them both in the international context and with reference to other methodologies and research fields, most notably postcolonial studies. After the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation in February 2022, comparative studies at the crossroads of Belarusian, Russian, and Ukrainian cultures have become a thorny issue. Scholars should seek to strike a balance between a philological approach and the ethical need to respect the different cultural orientations of East Slavic nations.

  • Russian-Eastern Intersections. A Venetian ‘Anomaly’

    • Authors: Aldo Ferrari
      Pages: 241 - 254
Abstract: This article is devoted to the research of a group of scholars from Ca’ Foscari University of Venice who over the course of several decades – especially starting from the 1970s, and partly up to now – have studied the cultural and political relationships between Russia and Asia. Some of these scholars were specialists in Russian studies, others came from orientalist disciplines (in particular Iranian and Turkish studies), but showed an in-depth interest – also based on acquaintance with the language – in Russia and the Soviet Union. Their research has produced a large number of publications, of a predominantly literary and historical nature, which constitute an important contribution to the knowledge of Russian-Eastern interactions, with particular reference to the Caucasus, but also to Central Asia, Crimea and the Volga region. Some aspects of this ‘Venetian school’ of Russian-Asian studies can be very useful, albeit counter-current, for present-day research on the Russian, Soviet and post-Soviet area.

  • Morava of Pannonia Again. Notwithstanding Chrabr

    • Authors: Mario Enrietti
      Pages: 257 - 265
Abstract: Constantine-Cyril began to write Slavonic by adapting the Greek alphabet – which we could call ‘Constantinian’, not yet ‘Cyrillic’ – because, despite what Chrabr claims, the Greek cultural tradition and avoiding the accusation of heresy was more important than phonetics. Only in Morava of Pannonia did he create the Glagolitic alphabet due to disagreements with the Latin clergy. In Morava, as previously in Thessaloniki, the proto-Slavic groups *tj, *kti, *dj were pronounced t’, d’ and the appropriate signs were created.

  • Vladimir Ivanovič Lamanskij in Venice (1868-1869)

    • Authors: Alexey Valeryevich Malinov
      Pages: 267 - 280
Abstract: The aim of the article is to update the scientific heritage of the well-known Slavist and prominent representative of late Slavophilism Vladimir Ivanovič Lamanskij (1833-1914). Lamanskij’s biography is insufficiently studied in modern research literature. On the basis of archival documents, the article reconstructs Lamanskij’s work in the archives of Venice in 1868 and 1869, which resulted in the publication of an extensive collection of documents and studies on the Venetian Republic’s relations with the Greeks and Slavs during its heyday (16th-early 18th century), called State Secrets of Venice (1884). Lamanskij himself considered State Secrets of Venice his primary academic contribution, and the preface is one of Lamanskij’s main ideological texts. It reflects the Panslavist ideas that were supported in the Russian academic environment in the last third of the 19th century. Archival materials allow us to trace the genesis of Lamanskij’s historiosophic views to better understand how his concept of civilisation, in which the ideas of Slavophiles were developed, was formed. One of the key concept of Lamanskij’s work is the idea of confrontation between the Greco-Slavic and Romano-Germanic cultures in Europe. As a consequence, the study provides a better understanding of the ideology of late Slavophilism in the form of a theory which, in Lamanskij’s works, claims the status of a scientific programme in the humanities and social sciences.
