  • Bodily Practices in Action Formation and Ascription in Multilingual
           Interaction

    • Authors: Arja Piirainen-Marsh, Niina Lilja, Søren Wind Eskildsen
Abstract: This special issue brings together empirical studies that investigate how bodily practices feature in action formation and action ascription in multilingual interaction (Schegloff, 2007; Levinson, 2013). Grounded in video-based conversation analysis and drawing on data from diverse sociomaterial settings, the articles investigate the contingent interactional processes through which speakers from different language backgrounds accomplish actions and achieve intersubjectivity. They demonstrate how specific constellations of linguistic resources, bodily conduct, spatial configurations, and material ecology are built into accomplishment of actions at different levels of interactional organization. Collectively, the articles illustrate how the participants draw on each other’s expertise, including different languages (code-switching, translanguaging) and bodily conduct as an integral part of the “web of resources” that are mobilized when actions are formulated and managed in interaction.

  • Multimodal Word-Search Trajectories in L2 Interaction

    • Authors: Klara Skogmyr Marian, Simona Pekarek Doehler
Abstract: This paper investigates the temporal dynamics of bodily and vocal conduct in the course of L2 word searches. Based on a longitudinal dataset of L2 French conversations, we first identify a recurrent multimodal search-trajectory involving specific simultaneous and successive assemblies of hand movements/holds with gaze, and (para)verbal displays of ongoing search. We interpret these Gestalt-like trajectories as part of methodic practices through which speakers both account for breaks in progressivity and display their search as “solitary”, preempting recipient’s entry into the turn-in-progress. We then put our findings into a longitudinal perspective, showing how features of these assemblies change over time in the developmental trajectories of L2 speakers.

  • Multimodal Action Formation in Second Language Talk

    • Authors: Tim Greer
Abstract: This study explores the multimodal action formation of second language (L2) apologies, particularly in relation to the members’ orientation to the significance of the misdemeanour. Although talk is the primary means through which participants accomplish apologies, embodied and paralinguistic interaction also play an integral role in conveying the proportional intensity of the apology. Members may bolster a second language apology with gestures from their first language, such as the Japanese gassho gesture. The study draws on conversation analytic research on L2 use as situated within a complex ecology of multimodal social interaction to reflect on the notions of interactional competence and interactional repertoires. The sequences were video-recorded among Japanese homestay visitors and their American host families.

  • Deontic Autonomy in Family Interaction

    • Authors: Maria Frick, Elina Palola
Abstract: The multimodal conversation analysis in this paper shows how an au pair and a mother use several turns consisting of various bodily and multilingual elements to persuade a 5-year-old to go to the bathroom. We examine the participants’ orientation to the child’s deontic autonomy; that is, his right to determine his own actions. The analysis shows that although the au pair and child disagree on whether the child should go to the bathroom, they both orient to the same norms of interaction and the norm of deontic autonomy more specifically.

  • Talk and Embodied Conduct in Word Searches in Video-Mediated Interactions

    • Authors: Budimka Uskokovic, Carmen Talehgani-Nikazm
Abstract: This paper concerns ways L2 speakers utilize embodied practices when engaged in word searches in interactions via video-mediated interaction. Examining the role of embodiment in word search practices in semi-pedagogical conversations between native German speakers and German language learners, we demonstrate how interlocutors use the gesture of an upward extended index finger to manage extended word searches in the ongoing production of the turn. The gesture plus the request to wait (ein moment/”one moment”) are used to indicate that the turn is temporarily put on hold, during which the L2 speaker orients to the screen to complete the ongoing word search. In addition, our paper scrutinizes how L2 speakers’ embodied practices emerge in the context of video-mediated interaction.

  • Gestural Matching and Contingent Teaching

    • Authors: Ali Reza Majlesi
Abstract: This study explores how iconic gestural matching in responsive turns is used in Swedish L2 talk not only to demonstrate understanding, but also as a referable by L1 speakers to highlight part of the previous turn as the focus of instruction. Gestural matching indicates intersubjective understanding (de Fornel, 1992), cohesion across turns (Koschmann & LeBaron, 2002), or conjoint actions (Lerner, 2002). In the context of L2 learning, they can be used for pedagogical purposes (Eskildsen & Wagner, 2015; Majlesi, 2015). This study reports on the use of gestural matching in “language cafés”, where gestures are recycled to make part of the prior turn salient and relevant for the emergence of learnables and for contingent teaching.

  • The Embodied Work of Repairing-for-Teasing in Everyday L2 Talk

    • Authors: Niina Lilja, Søren Wind Eskildsen
Abstract: This paper focuses on participants’ embodied conduct in the service of action ascription in teasing environments. The teasing activity is sequentially organized as an other-initiated repair sequence in which the other-initiations of repair (OIRs) are used as vehicles for carrying out the teasing actions (see also Schegloff, 1997, 2007; Rossi, 2018). The analysis shows that the double-barreled OIRs are designed as multimodal action packages in which the verbal part is delivered in a serious manner and combined with embodied conduct that typically characterizes repair environments, such as head turns and tilts, forward-leaning, and gestural holds, but produced in exaggerated or pretended manner. The embodied exaggeration and performed character are the key elements contributing to action ascription in teasing environments.

  • Multimodal Gestalts in Reformulating Practices in Language Cafés

    • Authors: Silvia Kunitz, Ali Reza Majlesi
Abstract: This study focuses on the multimodal gestalts (Mondada, 2014) in unsolicited other-reformulations produced by L1 speaking volunteers in language cafés where visitors practice Swedish with volunteers from the local community. The unsolicited other-reformulations in our collection: (a) act as clarifications of what was said before, and (b) highlight (Goodwin, 2018; Majlesi, 2022/this issue) lexical items used in the prior turn, thereby orienting to them as learnables (Majlesi & Broth, 2012). Our findings suggest that multimodal gestalts in other-reformulations make parts of the original turn more visible and transparent for L2 speakers, and therefore make such parts salient for language learning.

  • Recipient Design by Gestures

    • Authors: Niina Lilja, Arja Piirainin-Marsh
Abstract: This paper investigates how depictive gestures, i.e., hand movements that depict actions, scenes or objects, are configured and used for accomplishing instructions. By drawing on video recordings of second language interactions in cooking classes for newcomers in Finland, we focus on instructions that project a certain type of complying bodily action as the relevant next action. We demonstrate that the instructions are designed to be sensitive not only to the contingencies of the material ecology of the kitchen but also to the epistemic and linguistic asymmetries between the participants. The analysis shows how depictive gestures contribute to the forward-feeding function of cooking instructions by visualizing how the instructed action should be appropriately carried out. The findings contribute to the accumulating understanding of how embodied resources further intersubjectivity in second language interactions (Eskildsen & Wagner, 2015; Greer, 2019; Lilja & Piirainen-Marsh, 2019).
