  • Of Animatronic Praise Bands and Worship-Leading Chickens: The Serious
Business of Evangelical Christian Worship Parody Videos

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: During the early twenty-first century's troubled times of conspiracy theories, far-right resurgence, and social unrest, most academic work on American evangelicals has been characterized by a deadly seriousness. However, evangelical humor is a popular and lucrative media form, with satirical narratives and parody videos thriving online. A favorite target of evangelical humor is pop-rock worship music. Satirical news stories and parody videos lampoon simple or nonsensical song lyrics, local church bands' aspirations to pop stardom, and the all too predictable "spontaneity" of worship song sets. Online music parody videos have become key elements within what Fine and de Soucey (2005) call "joking culture."Worship ... Read More

  • Wandering Dervish of Laila Majnu: Sufism and Socio-Political Mobilization
           in Kashmir

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Kashmir1 has been treated as a "special" place in the narratives of Hindi cinema,2 given that the beautiful mountainous landscapes of the territory figure in Hindu mythology as a sacred home of ancient Hindu civilization (Gaur 2010, 189; Lutgendorf 2005). The Hindi films immediately following the Indian independence in 1947 captured this theme of Kashmir as a "spiritual abode" by plotting romantic drama among the mountainous terrains of the beautiful Kashmir Valley. This was particularly an articulation of the nationalist imaginaries of the post-colonial Hindu middle-class (Gaur 2010; Kabir 2005). Hindi cinema's treatment of Kashmir has been in line with the enunciations of India's first prime minister Jawaharlal ... Read More

  • The Celebrity Imprint: Fan–Celebrity Attachments and Religious Work
Among Fans of John Lennon and Johnny Cash

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: "I was from the start devoted to John. To me, he represented ME . . . he stood for everything I wanted to be . . . clever, intellectual, creative and irreverent" (Personal email, February 1, 2019; emphasis in original). In this quotation from one of the John Lennon fans interviewed for this study, Carolyn reveals the complexity of fan attachments. As a young child, her identification with Lennon gained traction and intricacy as she developed. In Celebrity Society, sociologist Robert van Krieken (2012, 92) observes that a fan's "self-perception" increases when the celebrity plays a more significant role in his or her life. These types of fan-celebrity relationships, argues van Krieken, "can be understood as a social ... Read More

  • Waiting for "God's Best": Love and Sex in Evangelical Christianity in the
           Philippines

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Love abounds in the Philippines. According to a global survey, Filipinos "get the most love in the world" (Diola 2013). Administered by Gallup, the survey reported that 93% of Filipinos felt that they were loved, way above the global average of 70%. Arguably, this accounts for the proliferation of television and radio programs that offer advice about romance and relationships. From the serious to the hilarious, they punctuate the ordinary Filipino's routine, especially the daily commute. In bookstores, the "love and relationships" genre is perhaps the most visited section. Pocketbooks written for the general audience are guaranteed commercial success. Since the 1980s, romance paperbacks typically land on the ... Read More

  • Superman and the Bible: How the Idea of Superheroes Affects the Reading of
           Scripture by Nicholaus Pumphrey (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: There are many studies of how the Bible and religion influenced the character of Superman, but Nicholaus Pumphrey's book Superman and the Bible successfully does the reverse: Pumphrey argues that Superman changed the collective subconscious of the modern West and that Superman stories reframed how the Bible is interpreted. Pumphrey writes: "Because of his influence and pervasiveness, Superman has truly infiltrated our meaning making through intertextuality, which forces us to read the Bible as if Superman was in it" (50). Using the methodology of intertextuality, Pumphrey demonstrates that major biblical characters are interpreted differently today because of Superman. The concept of the "superhero" is now read ... • The Altars Where We Worship: The Religious Significance of Popular Culture
           by Juan M. Floyd-Thomas, Stacey M. Floyd-Thomas, Mark G. Toulouse (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The Altars Where We Worship seeks to demonstrate how US Americans are fulfilling their religious impulses through popular culture apart from or in addition to traditional institutions. Nested within the shifting sociological landscape, the contestation of secularization, and the slide from "religious" to "spiritual," the authors broadly apply Ninian Smart's seven dimensions of religion from The Religious Experience of Mankind to six areas of popular culture, which they call "altars." These seven dimensions include myth, doctrine, ethics, institutions, rituals, experience, and materiality. Subsequently, Smart's typology is applied to six different altars of popular culture: body and sex, big business, entertainment ... Read More
