  • Network Operator-Provided 5G Streaming Media and Future Broadcast Services

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Christophe Burdinat;Thomas Stockhammer;Mickaël Raulet;Thibaud Biatek;
      Pages: 10 - 16
      Abstract: Beyond the spectral efficiency and throughput improvement for enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), 5G brings many new features targeting vertical applications. To leverage the new 5G features and capabilities for media distribution, 5G offers the 5G Media Streaming Architecture (5GMSA), which supports a full set of collaboration scenarios between third-party content providers and mobile network operators (MNOs) with various degrees of integration adapted to the over-the-top (OTT) ecosystem. While the first version of 5GMSA focuses on media delivery over unicast, multicast/broadcast in 5G is one of the key new features currently specified by 3GPP and expected for Release 17. Integration of 5G multicast/broadcast capabilities within 5GMSA is essential to scale up the network capacity for linear contents. With the publication of Digital Video Broadcast-I (DVB-I) in 2020, DVB allows for the delivery of linear television services to internet-connected devices over broadband and broadcast networks. As an access-independent service layer, DVB-I becomes a strong candidate for providing a converging service layer for 5G. This article explores the growing capabilities offered by the 5GMSA, how the multicast/broadcast capabilities will be integrated, and how it will enable the delivery of DVB-I services.

  • Universal CMAF Container for Efficient Cross-Format Low-Latency Delivery

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Will Law;Eric Toullec;Mickaël Raulet;
      Pages: 17 - 25
      Abstract: Current implementations of low-latency adaptive streaming over HTTP utilize a diversity of presentation formats, containers, origins, and caching behaviors. For efficient delivery, a common origin and a single set of cacheable media objects provide the highest performance and scalability across a delivery system. This article introduces a means of leveraging the Common Media Application Format (CMAF) as a standardized container format, combined with specific content encoding constraints and addressing mode constraints in low-latency HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) (LL-HLS) and low-latency Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) (LL-DASH), to provide a cross-format solution that maximizes edge cache efficiency and minimizes origin storage costs and client request rate.

  • Server-Side Versus Client-Side Synchronization for Watch Together
           Applications Using CMAF Low Latency

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Patrick Gendron;
      Pages: 26 - 33
      Abstract: Watch together is an application that was widely deployed during the COVID-19 global health crisis. Early results show a much longer viewing time when the feature is activated. The synchronization between the A/V streamed content, combined with the need to have a low, end-to-end latency compatible with the user interactions through integrated social media apps, is challenging, especially when watch together is deployed on all devices. The legacy approach used by existing watch together applications is to rely on a master user that will drive the other members of the group using an overlay control protocol to make sure that all the players will synchronize their playback. This article proposes a scheme that uses the built-in synchronization provided in Common Media Application Format (CMAF) low latency for both Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) and HTTP Live Streaming (HLS), enabling a subsecond time delay between clients in the same geographical location.

  • Analysis of Generation Loss for Wavelet-Based Compression

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Galen M. Reich;Jonathan Heathcote;
      Pages: 34 - 42
      Abstract: This article investigates the sources of generation loss, the loss of picture quality over multiple coding generations, for waveletbased mezzanine video compression using the VC-2 video codec. The theoretical mechanisms of generation loss are presented, highlighting the detrimental interaction between quantization in the encoder and otherwise reversible processes in the decoder. A novel experimental investigation of the VC-2 video codec is presented, in which the significance of different sources of generation loss are compared and the parameters that impact the propagation of generation loss are contrasted. The most significant source of generation loss examined in this article is the addition of an “accuracy bit shift,” which improves subjective quality for a single coding generation but causes losses over subsequent generations. Of those investigated, the most significant way to mitigate the propagation of generation loss is to decrease the wavelet transform depth. This article concludes that, through careful parameter selection and signal processing design, generation loss for wavelet-based mezzanine codecs may be practically eliminated.

  • Digital Print Stock Design: A Framework for the Post-Film Era

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Cullen Kelly;
      Pages: 43 - 56
      Abstract: For most of cinema history, the defining factor in the post-production “look” of captured imagery was the print stock. In addition to serving the technical function of transforming scene-referred imagery for display, print stocks were engineered to impart preferential color characteristics and selected by filmmakers based on these qualities. As the physical medium of the print stock has been retired from image mastering workflows, so too has the principle of a global creative transform. This is neither necessary nor beneficial. With the ongoing proliferation of camera and display standards, unifying the imagery of a given piece of content has become increasingly challenging. This has led to the development of systems that address the technical aspects of the challenge, most notably the Academy Color Encoding System (ACES). Such initiatives and their broad adoption demonstrate an industry-wide recognition that world-class color grading demands world-class engineering. Yet, in spite of this recognition, there exists no initiative aimed at supporting the creative aspects of unifying motion imagery at the macro-level. This article outlines the proposed framework for the design of digital print stocks (DPSs), composed of a set of manipulations whose parameters can be intuitively modified by artists, resulting in a global look that can be deployed within any imaging pipeline.
