  • Krylov Methods for Large-Scale Dynamical Systems: Application in Fluid
           Dynamics

      First page: 030801
Abstract: In fluid dynamics, predicting and characterizing bifurcations, from the onset of unsteadiness to the transition to turbulence, is of critical importance for both academic and industrial applications. Different tools from dynamical systems theory can be used for this purpose. In this review, we present a concise theoretical and numerical framework focusing on practical aspects of the computation and stability analyses of steady and time-periodic solutions, with emphasis on high-dimensional systems such as those arising from the spatial discretization of the Navier–Stokes equations. Using a matrix-free approach based on Krylov methods, we extend the capabilities of the open-source high-performance spectral element-based time-stepper Nek5000. The numerical methods discussed are implemented in nekStab, an open-source and user-friendly add-on toolbox dedicated to the study of stability properties of flows in complex three-dimensional geometries. The performance and accuracy of the methods are illustrated and examined using standard benchmarks from the fluid mechanics literature. Thanks to its flexibility and domain-agnostic nature, the methodology presented in this work can be applied to develop similar toolboxes for other solvers, most importantly outside the field of fluid mechanics.

Abstract: Applied Mechanics Reviews (AMR) was founded in 1948 under the editorship of Lloyd Hamilton Donnell (1895–1997), in whose honor the biennial Lloyd Hamilton Donnell Applied Mechanics Reviews Paper Award was inaugurated in 2014. The founding of the journal, shortly after World War II, filled a void in the review of state-of-the-art research in applied mechanics, occupied before the war by the German periodical Zeitschrift für Mechanik. The inaugural volume included both Theodore von Karman and Stephen Timoshenko as Editorial Advisors.

  • Electro-Chemo-Mechanical Challenges and Perspective in Lithium Metal
           Batteries

      First page: 010802
Abstract: The development of next-generation batteries, utilizing electrodes with high capacities and power densities requires a comprehensive understanding and precise control of material interfaces and architectures. Electro-chemo-mechanics plays an integral role in the morphological evolution and stability of such complex interfaces. Volume changes in electrode materials and the chemical interactions of electrode/electrolyte interfaces result in nonuniform stress fields and structurally different interphases, fundamentally affecting the underlying transport and reaction kinetics. The origin of this mechanistic coupling and its implications on degradation is uniquely dependent on the interface characteristics. In this review, the distinct nature of chemo–mechanical coupling and failure mechanisms at solid–liquid interfaces and solid–solid interfaces is analyzed. For lithium metal electrodes, the critical role of surface/microstructural heterogeneities on the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) stability and dendrite growth in liquid electrolytes, and on the onset of contact loss and filament penetration with solid electrolytes is summarized. With respect to composite electrodes, key differences in the microstructure-coupled electro-chemo-mechanical attributes of intercalation- and conversion-based chemistries are delineated. Moving from liquid to solid electrolytes in such cathodes, we highlight the significant impact of solid–solid point contacts on transport/mechanical response, electrochemical performance, and failure modes such as particle cracking and delamination. Finally, we present our perspective on future research directions and opportunities to address the underlying electro-chemo-mechanical challenges for enabling next-generation lithium metal batteries.
