  • Image Processing Approach for Detection of Leukocytes in Peripheral Blood
           Smears
    • Abstract: Abstract Peripheral blood smear analysis is a gold-standard method used in laboratories to diagnose many hematological disorders. Leukocyte analysis helps in monitoring and identifying health status of a person. Segmentation is an important step in the process of automation of analysis which would reduce the burden on hematologists and make the process simpler. The segmentation of leukocytes is a challenging task due to variations in appearance of cells across the slide. In the proposed study, an automated method to detect nuclei and to extract leukocytes from peripheral blood smear images with color and illumination variations is presented. Arithmetic and morphological operations are used for nuclei detection and active contours method is for leukocyte detection. The results demonstrate that the proposed method detects nuclei and leukocytes with Dice score of 0.97 and 0.96 respectively. The overall sensitivity of the method is around 96%.

  • A Novel Technique for Multi Biometric Cryptosystem Using Fuzzy Vault
    • Abstract: Abstract Biometric authentication is the process of recognizing a person by means of his\her psychological or behavioral traits. One of the most important issues faced by the biometric system developer is to protect the template obtained from the biometric of a person. Unimodal biometric system has some drawbacks such as noisy data, interclass variations and spoof attack. Multimodal biometric system has been developed to address the boundaries of unimodal biometric system and increase the security of template. In this paper, template security analysis of multimodal biometric system based of fingerprint and palmprint is proposed and implemented. Fuzzy vault scheme is employed to protect both the fingerprint and palmprint template. At enrollment, image processing techniques such as image enhancement, segmentation and bottom-hat filtering are applied on both the biometric to improve the quality and subsequently the most important features are extracted. Extracted features are concatenated. Combined features along with secret key are utilized to generate the database in the vault. During authentication, query images are sent as an input with the stored template to recover the key. Experimental results are shown that the proposed multi biometrics system performs well than the other methods considered for comparison.

  • Glioma Tumor Grade Identification Using Artificial Intelligent Techniques
    • Abstract: Abstract Computer aided diagnosis using artificial intelligent techniques made tremendous improvement in medical applications especially for easy detection of tumor area, tumor type and grades. This paper presents automatic glioma tumor grade identification from magnetic resonant images using Wndchrm tool based classifier (Weighted Neighbour Distance using Compound Heirarchy of Algorithms Representing Morphology) and VGG-19 deep convolutional neural network (DNN). For experimentation, DICOM images are collected from reputed government hospital and the proposed intelligent system categorized the tumor into four grades such as low grade glioma, oligodendroglioma, anaplastic glioma and glioblastoma multiform. After preprocessing, features are extracted, optimized and then classified using Windchrm tool where the most significant features are selected on the basis of Fisher score. In the case of DNN classifier, data augmentation is also performed before applying the images into the deep learning network. The performance of the classifiers are analysed with various measures such as accuracy, precision, sensitivity, specificity and F1-score. The results showed reasonably good performance with a maximum classification accuracy of 92.86% for the Wndchrm classifier and 98.25% for VGG-19 DNN classifier. The results are also compared with similar recent works and the proposed system is found to have better performance.

  • Evaluation of the Applicability of 3d Models as Perceived by the Students
           of Health Sciences
    • Abstract: Abstract The methodology and style of teaching anatomy in the faculties of Health Sciences is evolving due to the changes being introduced as a result of the application of new technologies. This brings a more positive attitude in the students, enabling an active participation during the lessons. One of these new technologies is the creation of 3D models that reliably recreates the anatomical details of real bone pieces and allow access of anatomy students to bone pieces that are not damaged and possess easily identifiable anatomical details. In our work, we have presented previously created 3D models of skull and jaw to the students of anatomy in the Faculties of Health Sciences of the University of Salamanca, Spain. The faculties included were odontology, medicine, occupational therapy nursing, health sciences and physiotherapy. A survey was carried out to assess the usefulness of these 3D models in the practical study of anatomy. The total number of students included in the survey was 280.The analysis of the results presents a positive evaluation about the use of 3D models by the students studying anatomy in different Faculties of Health Sciences.

  • Computer Application of Ultrasound and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Images
           for the Anatomical Learning of the Pelvis and the Female Pelvic Floor
    • Abstract: Abstract Computer applications have been incorporated as valuable components in teaching, especially thanks to the advancement and innovation of new technologies during the last decades. The implementation of these computer developments in medicine and in the field of medical teaching with different utilities has been a revolution. This is manifested with greater intensity in certain medical specialties and in different areas of medical education, for example in the study of human anatomy, especially in parts of the human body of great complexity such as the pelvis and the pelvic floor of women. New technologies are also important in the use, study and interpretation of radiological tests, including ultrasound and nuclear magnetic resonance. This implies a change in the study and learning techniques of students, resident doctors and specialists in gynecology, radiodiagnosis, urology and many other medical specialties, considering new computer developments as a good alternative or complement to existing teaching methods. For this reason, we consider that computer programs like the one we present in this work can be very useful in the future of education and more specifically in the training of specialists in medicine.

  • Monitoring an Analysis of Perturbations in Fusion Deposition Modelling
           (FDM) Processes for the Use of Biomaterials
    • Abstract: Abstract During an FDM production process, there are different external disturbances to the characteristics of the machine that can affect to the production process. These disturbances will cause the final result differs from the desired one. Moreover, these disturbances, such as temperature or chamber humidity, are extremely important in case of using biocompatible materials. The use of these kind of materials with not controlled environment, can cause them to modify or loss of their properties; what will make the product unusable. Apart from these external disturbances, the conditions of the machine to which the material is subjected must also be considered, such as temperature, vibrations or extrusion speed. The monitoring of all these data will allow to know the conditions to which the product was exposed during the process. In this way, it will be able to verify the validity of the final product. For these reasons, the purpose of this work is to monitor the conditions of production of structures with biocompatible materials by fused deposition modelling (FDM) technique. This monitoring will allow us to obtain a report that guarantee the technical and geometrical characteristics of the model and the biomaterial properties. The parameters chosen to be monitored are: Diameter of filament use, temperature in extrusion nozzle, ambient temperature in closed chamber, ambient humidity in closed chamber. The obtained results, after collected and analysing the data, present variations of up to 3% in the temperature of the nozzle of the extruder with respect to set temperature. In the case of the filament diameter the difference with respect to the value provided from the filament supplier is of 13,7%. In addition, the results show how the ambient humidity in closed chamber has changed by 2 percentage points and the ambient temperature in closed chamber has been increased 6,52 °C with respect to the set values.

  • LSTM Model for Prediction of Heart Failure in Big Data
    • Abstract: Abstract The combination of big data and deep learning is a world-shattering technology that can make a great impact on any industry if used in a proper way. With the availability of large volume of health care datasets and progressions in deep learning techniques, systems are now well equipped in diagnosing many health problems. Utilizing the intensity of substantial historical information in electronic health record (EHR), we built up, a conventional predictive temporal model utilizing recurrent neural systems (RNN) like LSTM and connected to longitudinal time stepped EHR. Experience records were contribution to RNN to anticipate the analysis and prescription classes for a resulting visit during heart disappointment (e.g. diagnosis codes, drug codes or method codes). In this paper, we also investigated whether use of deep learning to model temporal relations among events in electronic health records (EHRs) would enhance the model performance in predicting initial diagnosis of heart failure (HF) compared to some of the traditional methods that disregard temporality. By examining these time stamped EHRs, we could recognize the associations between various diagnosis occasions and finally predicate when a patient is being analyzed for a disease. In any case, it is hard to access the current EHR data straightforwardly, since almost all data are sparse and not standardized. Along these lines, we proposed a robust model for prediction of heart failure. The fundamental commitment of this paper is to predict the failure of heart by means of a neural network model based on patient’s electronic medicinal information. In order to, demonstrate the diagnosis events and prediction of heart failure, we used the medical concept vectors and the essential standards of a long short-term memory (LSTM) deep network model. The proposed LSTM model uses SiLU and tanh as activation function in the hidden layers and Softmax in output layer in the network. Bridgeout is used as a regularization technique for weight optimization throughout the network. Assessments subject to the real-time data exhibit the favorable effectiveness and feasibility of recommended model in the risk of heart failure prediction. The results showed improved accuracy in heart failure detection and the model performance is compared using the existing deep learning models. Enhanced prior detection could expose novel chances for deferring or anticipating movement to analysis of heart failure and diminish cost.

  • Oral appliance for Obstructive Sleep Apnea: Prototyping and Optimization
           of the Mandibular Protrusion Device
    • Abstract: Abstract Obstructive Sleep apnea is a public health problem. This disease is associated with daytime sleepiness, increased motor vehicle accidents, heart failure and stroke. Treatment options include weight loss, positive airway pressure, pharyngeal and orthognatic surgery. However, selected patients have good response to oral appliances devices that intended to protrude and stabilize the mandible mechanically during the night in order to reduce the collapsibility of the upper airway. Selection of patients includes primary snoring, mild, moderate and positional apnea. The perfect mandibular advance device has not yet been designed. For these reasons, the objective of this paper is to present a new thermoadjustable chair-side oral appliance. Device integrates the best characteristics of custom made and boils and bite previous designs and minimizes inconveniences and possible side effects. The device is a titratable mandibular advancement appliance. It consists of two independent prefabricated trays adaptable to the shape of adult dental arch and linked to each other by a protrusion mechanism. Each tray contains a hard outer shell and a soft thermoplastic resin inner body. The position of the jaw can be adjusted by moving an aluminum rack into, or out from, the guide so the ratchet may get locked into a certain position ensuring the length of the mechanism. The protrusion mechanism is fixed to the splint using small rings that are articulated over a “t” button. Our prototype satisfies the requirements of an effective oral appliance, in terms of retention, comfort, safety and efficacy. It is easy to fit, durable, low cost, quickly titratable, not bulky and easy cleaning. Thermoplastic appliances are specially used like a predictor of treatment response in apnea patients. The device described is a cost-effective introduction to mandibular advancement technology. A qualified dentist or trained sleep doctor could mitigate dental side effects and reduce their incidence.

  • Advances in the Visualization and the Study of the Pyramidal Tract with
           Magnetic Resonance Tractography
    • Abstract: Abstract Over the last several years, specific radiological techniques have been used for the analysis of the central nervous system pathways. They involve a magnetic resonance sequence called diffusion tensor imaging. In order to process the data provided by this sequence it is necessary to use software that can post-process the image and render three-dimensional images of the central nervous system pathways. Thanks to this sequence it has been possible to isolate over the years many nerve pathways that cross the brain tissue, particularly those which occupy a significant space. This sequence could have a large variety of uses, such as helping with the study of brain anatomy, assisting with surgery planning, or establishing a relationship between the nerve fibers and tumoral lesions. However, there has been an increasing number of cases that report a low reliability related to the tractographic representation of this technique. Our goal with this article is to analyse a specific nerve pathway, the piramidal tract, in order to assess the coherence between the images obtained and the anatomy that is already known from the perspective of the radiological image, and to compare this tract between different patients.

  • Provider Access to Legacy Electronic Anesthesia Records Following
           Implementation of an Electronic Health Record System
    • Abstract: Abstract Many hospitals are in the process of replacing their legacy anesthesia information management system (AIMS) with an Electronic Health Record (EHR) system, within which the AIMS is integrated. Using the legacy AIMS security access log table, we studied the extent to which anesthesia providers were accessing historical anesthesia records (January 2006 – March 2017) following implementation of an EHR (April 2017). Statistical analysis was by segmented regression. At the time of implementation of the EHR, in 44.8% (SE = 0.3%) of cases, there was a prior anesthetic record for the patient that had been documented in the legacy AIMS. Following EHR implementation, the mean number of preoperative clinical views of all prior anesthetic records divided by the total number of cases performed decreased to 2.3% (0.3%) from the baseline of 25.1% (0.8%). The estimated ratio of the 2 means was 0.18 (95% CI 0.11 to 0.31, P < 0.00001). For views of unique records, the decrease was to 2.2% (0.3%) from the baseline of 18.3% (0.5%). The estimated ratio was 0.23 (95% CI 0.15 to 0.35, P < 0.00001). These results show that, following conversion to an integrated EHR, providing access to historical anesthesia records by maintaining the legacy AIMS is not an effective strategy to promote review of such records as part of the preoperative evaluation process. Because such records provide important information for many patients, providing linked access to such records within the EHR as part of the patient encounter may be a more effective approach.

  • Application of PDF Software with 3D Functionalities in Radiological Models
           of the Skull Base: Characteristics, Experience and Solutions
    • Abstract: Abstract A widely known alternative for reading and exchanging digital files is the PDF file, by Adobe. This type of file has become the most used for the electronic exchange of files. It is platform-independent, suitable for the exchange of medical data in electronic academic publication. PDF can support additional resources such image, media, even, three-dimensional surface mesh models. A three-dimensional model of the base of the skull is generated from computed tomography images to provide an overview of the PDF file format, with emphasis on biomedical images. Three-dimensional representation in PDF files offers many advantages, as these images have more information than two-dimensional images, therefore, we consider this tool (3D PDF) a good alternative for the visualization, interaction and distribution of 3D content.

  • Adaptive Fruitfly Based Modified Region Growing Algorithm for Cardiac Fat
           Segmentation Using Optimal Neural Network
    • Abstract: Abstract Epicardial adipose tissue is a visceral fat that has remained an entity of concern for decades owing to its high correlation with coronary heart disease. It continues to stump medical practitioners on the pretext of its relevance with pericardial fat and its dependence on a numerous other parameters including ethnicity and physique of an individual. This calls for a fool-proof algorithm that promises accurate classification and segmentation, hence an immaculate prediction. CT is immensely popular and widely preferred for diagnosis. Implementation of an improvised algorithm in CT would be a natural necessity. This research work proposes a Fruitfly Algorithm based Modified region growing algorithm is applied to the acquired CT images to segment fat accurately. The proposed methodology promises image registration and classification in order to segment two cardiac fats namely epicardial, pericardial and mediastinal. The main contributions are (1) Fat feature extraction: Construction of GLCM features CT image (2) Development of GWO based optimal neural network for classification; (3) Modeling the fat segmentation using modified region growing algorithm with Fruitfly optimization. The entire experimentation has been implemented in MATLAB simulation environment and final result is expected to flaunt a definite distinction between cardiac mediastinal and epicardial fats. Parallely, the accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, FPR and FNR have been stated and contrasted methodically with the existing methodology. This venture aims at spurring the healthcare industry towards smarter computational techniques that multiplies efficiency manifold.

  • Application of Digital Radio Mondiale System in Medical Signal
           Transmission
    • Abstract: Abstract In order to study the application of digital radio mondiale (DRM) broadcasting system in medical signal transmission, taking sinusoidal signal as an example, the transmission format is designed, and the data transmission function of the system channel is verified and applied to the transmission of medical information. Taking the traditional electrocardiogram signal and magnetic resonance image as examples, the two kinds of medical information are successfully transmitted according to the appropriate transmission format. As the simplest and easiest to deploy communication mode, the system will provide the fastest and timeliest information and emergency communication function for disaster relief and rescue, which is a practical and valuable application.

  • The Influence of Different Segmentation Methods on the Extraction of
           Imaging Histological Features of Hepatocellular Carcinoma CT
    • Abstract: Abstract In order to analyze the influence of different segmentation techniques on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) CT (Computed Tomography) imaging histological feature extraction, Grow Cut method and Graph Cut method are used to segment hepatocellular carcinoma from arterial CT images of HCC patients, and the stability and repeatability of imaging histological features are studied. Meanwhile, hierarchical clustering method is used to reduce the redundancy of features. The results show that the repeatability and redundancy mainly depend on the method of tumor segmentation. Semi-automatic segmentation method can improve the repeatability of image features, and hierarchical clustering can reduce the redundancy of features. Different segmentation techniques have different effects on the extraction of histological features of CT images of HCC.

  • Applications of Virtual and Augmented Reality in Biomedical Imaging
    • Abstract: Abstract Virtual and Augmented Reality has experienced a steady growth in medicine in recent years. At the same time, the radiological images play a central role in the diagnosis and planification of surgical approaches. The aim of this study is to present the first attempt to enhanced radiological image visualization using virtual and augmented reality for better planification and monitorization of surgeries. This application allows to move beyond traditional two-dimensional images towards three-dimensional models that can be visualized and manipulated with both Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality. We propose possible approaches to automate the segmentation of radiological images, using computer vision techniques and Artificial Intelligence.

  • Technological Ecosystems in the Health Sector: a Mapping Study of European
           Research Projects
    • Abstract: Abstract The European Union has a substantial investment in research and development and demand side-measures in the health sector in order to promote new initiatives, prevent disease and foster healthy lifestyles. In particular, the European Commission and other European entities have funded research projects focused on the use of technology in the health sector. In this context, health research initiatives have evolved from user-centred monolithic solutions into collaborative partnerships of different stakeholders that gather around different technological platforms. In order to identify the lacks and opportunities in this area, a systematic mapping study was conducted with the aim of identifying and analysing the recent research projects developed in Europe related to technological ecosystems in the health sector. The study covered closed European research projects from 2003 to 2018. This paper aims to extend that systematic mapping study through ongoing research projects. The analysis of these research projects provides an overview of the current trends and identify the lacks and opportunities to define new advances in this research area. Moreover, the comparison between the first mapping study focused on closed projects, and the current study, allows getting an overview of the evolution of technological ecosystems in the health sector.

  • Computer-Aided Diagnosis System for Detection of Stomach Cancer with Image
           Processing Techniques
    • Abstract: Abstract Stomach cancer is a type of cancer that is hard to detect at an early stage because it gives almost no symptoms at the beginning. Stomach cancer is an increasing incidence of cancer both in the World as well as in Turkey. The most common method used worldwide for gastric cancer diagnosis is endoscopy. However, definitive diagnosis is made with endoscopic biopsy results. Diagnosis with endoscopy is a very specific and sensitive method. With high-resolution endoscopy it is possible to detect mild discolorations, bulges and structural changes of the surface of the mucosa. However, because the procedures are performed with the eye of a doctor, it is possible that the cancerous areas may be missed and / or incompletely detected. Because of the fact that the cancerous area cannot be completely detected may cause the problem of cancer recurrence after a certain period of surgical intervention. In order to overcome this problem, a computerized decision support system (CDS) has been implemented with the help of specialist physicians and image processing techniques. The performed CDS system works as an assistant to doctors of gastroenterology, helping to identify the cancerous area in the endoscopic images of the scaffold, to take biopsies from these areas and to make a better diagnosis. We believe that gastric cancer will be helpful in determining the area and biopsy samples taken from the patient will be useful in determining the area. It is therefore considered a useful model.

  • Experimental Comparison on Dental BioTribological Pairs Zirconia/Zirconia
           and Zirconia/Natural Tooth by Using a Reciprocating Tribometer
    • Abstract: Abstract The application of tribology in dentistry is growing rapidly, intense research has been conducted to develop an understanding of dental tribology for better selection of artificial materials and dental implant design. Dental biotribology, has been one of the most important branches in biotribology in recent years. The aim of this research is to investigate the tribological performances in the tooth-to-tooth contact and material-to-natural tooth contact (zirconia vs. zirconia and natural tooth vs. zirconia). The presented research was carried out by testing the above mentioned tribological pairs with the use of a reciprocating tribometer under lubricated conditions (artificial saliva). The normal force used in the tests was 20 N the time for each test was of 60 min. The stroke length was 2 mm, according to the range of displacement used in scientific literature. The wear mass loss evaluation was evaluated by using a gravimetric method. In order to characterize the wear mechanisms, present in the worn surfaces after each of tribo-tests, a topographic analysis was carried with a 3D non-contact optical profiler. The results show that the minimum value of the COF is obtained in the case of Zirconia vs. Zirconia tribo-couple. The results on the wear mass loss show a very low wear rate when coupling in tribological condition natural tooth with a ceramic restoration (a mean value of 0.5 mg was found). This rate is even lower when the contact is between two artificial zirconia teeth.

  • Improving the Accuracy of Feature Selection in Big Data Mining Using
           Accelerated Flower Pollination (AFP) Algorithm
    • Abstract: Abstract In recent times, the main problem associated with big data analytics is its high dimensional data over the search space. Such data gathers continuously in search space making traditional algorithms infeasible for data mining in real time environment. Hence, feature selection is an important method to lighten the load during processing while inducing a model for mining. However, mining over such high dimensional data leads to formulation of optimal feature subset, which grows exponentially and leads to intractable computational demand. In this paper, a novel lightweight mechanism is used as a feature selection method, which solves the after effects arising with optimal feature selection. The feature selection in big data mining is done using accelerated flower pollination (AFP) algorithm. This method improves the accuracy of feature selection with reduced processing time. The proposed method is tested under larger set of data with high dimensionality to test the performance of proposed method.

  • Blood Glucose Regulation for Post-Operative Patients with Diabetics and
           Hypertension Continuum: A Cascade Control-Based Approach
    • Abstract: Abstract Management of glycemic level in post-operative condition is critical for hypertensive patients and the post-operative stress may results in hyperglycemia, hyper insulin and osmotic diuresis. Recent medical research shows that diabetic and hypertension hands together in a significant overlap in its etiology and its disease mechanism. It is clear that there is a call for monitoring in the parameter and controlling the glucose level particularly in the presence of hypertension. This paper proposes the novel complex (cascade) control system to control the insulin infusion level particularly in the presence of hypertension. Based on the requirements the structure has been designed and the simulation results indicates that the proposed control strategy shows better results and may achieve potentially better glycemic control to the hypersensitive diabetic patients.
