      Authors: Nergis Günsenin
Abstract: From left to right: Alessandra Ricci, Frederick van Doorninck, Jr., Nergis Günsenin, late Aksel Tibet. August 2018 – Küçükyalı ArkeoPark Image 100000000000100000000AAA96835150390E41DE.jpg Foto: Danielle Ricci During the 2015 excavation season at the Küçükyalı ArkeoPark (KYAP), under the direction of the Istanbul Archaeological Museums and with the scientific coordination of Alessandra Ricci, two ‘Günsenin IV’ amphoras were found. The smaller one emerged in a Late Byzantine chamber located in the southeastern corner of the monastery platform to the west of a tower. The second and larger one was retrieved in the northeastern end of the platform. There, a poorly executed calcareous floor had a second Günsenin IV embedded in it. The amphora underwent restoration and was displayed at the exhibition “Layer by Layer. Excavation of the Anatolian side of Istanbul, Aydos, Dragos, Küçükyalı, Pendik, Samandıra”. This article provides the opportunity to present preliminary data about the scientific results of research related to one of the two r...

      Authors: Alessandra Ricci
Abstract: Introduction The Küçükyalı ArkeoPark is an urban archaeology project with chronologies currently ranging from the 5th century – a period that sees material remains at the site but no architectural testimonies – to the main construction phase of the monastic complex of Satyros, associated with the patronage of patriarch Ignatios and dating to the mid-9th century, and a continuation of the same in the late Byzantine period ending in the first decades of the 14th century. The Küçükyalı ArkeoPark is located on the Asian side of Istanbul’s Greater Municipality and is part of the Maltepe Municipality (Fig. 1). The First Degree Protected Area – or 1. Derece Sit Alanı – within which the core of the surviving archaeological remains are located covers a medium-sized area of some 4,500/5,000 square meters. Tucked between modern buildings in the Çınar neighborhood, north of the Çınar Camii, the Küçükyalı ArkeoPark Project represents the largest surviving archaeological area open to the public t...

Abstract: 1. Research Focus “Urbanistic Studies in Limyra” (M. Seyer) The focus in 2018 should be laid in investigations on the urbanistic development of Limyra mainly during the Hellenistic period. Excavation and research work could be carried out in the frame of the scientific project “The Urbanistic Development of Limyra in the Hellenistic Period”. This project deals with general questions such as the spatial expansion respectively the borders of the settlement, the structural development of the city plan also with taking into account the economic and sociocultural terms, as well as with problems which arise from Limyra’s topographical and geological peculiarities. Amongst these first and foremost the influence of the unique hydrological situation has to be mentioned, as several natural streams flow through the ancient urban area (Rantitsch, Prochaska, Seyer, Lotz and Kurtze 2016). Based on the scientific results of previous years’ excavations in two areas, geoarchaeological and geophysical ...

  • Excavations at the Old City, Fortress, and Mound of Van: Work in 2018

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Erkan Konyar, Bülent Genç, Can Avcı, Armağan Tan
Abstract: The citadel at the site of Van Fortress-Tushpa rises on a natural rock formation and consists of three main sections including the Van Fortress Mound in the north and the Old City of Van in the south and the Citadel of Tushpa (Fig. 1). In the 2018 excavation season, excavations were carried out on the mound and the citadel. The rooms that are connected to the columned hall, which was found in trenches M25 and N25 on the Van Fortress Mound between 2015 and 2017, were completely exposed in the north-south direction (Fig. 2). As we have encountered in other trenches in the previous years, Urartian architecture in this area also consists of two building levels, “Early Urartian” and “Late Urartian”. In 2018, excavations concentrated on the section between the Urartian buildings in trenches N20 and N21 to the west of the mound and the columned hall in the east at the highest part of the mound. Excavation work started in trenches N24 and M24 to the west of the columned hall, and levels bel...

  • Two Column Bases from Mawan in the Hakkâri Province (Southeast corner of
           Turkey): A new Achaemenid Center'

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Kenan Işık, Bülent Genç, Vedat Timur, Rıfat Kuvanç
Abstract: Bell-shaped column bases are common finds from the Achaemenid Empire centers. These centers were governed either by Persians or local administrators who were dependent on Persia. Two bell-shaped column bases were found in the village of Mawan, 32 km from Şemdinli district of Hakkâri province in Turkey. These column bases are the first Achaemenid finds from the Hakkâri province. Mawan is situated at an important transit point between north-western Iran, eastern Anatolia and northern Iraq. At this point, it is necessary to draw attention to a widespread garrison network of the Achaemenid Empire in the region. Therefore, it is possible to consider the location of the Mawan column bases as the site of a garrison rather than an administrative center.

  • A Note on the Turkish Lot III/1891 From the Bab el-Gasus Cache (Egypt),
Kept at the Istanbul Archaeology Museums / Ancient Orient Museum

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Hülya Ataşcıoğlu Aykul, M. Baha Tanman, Miguel Ángel Escobar-Clarós
Abstract: Some of the artefacts composing the corpus of the ancient Egyptian shabti figurines, presented here, are already well documented and studied while some of them are scattered in different places around the world following their discovery. The shabti figurines are still waiting to be analysed as a whole collection. The 21st Dynasty (1077-943 B.C.) tomb of the priests and priestesses of Amun, also known as the “Bab el-Gasus”, is a case study for a group of forgotten artefacts. In 2016, the conference “Bab el-Gasus in Context” was held by the Gate of the Priests Project in Lisbon to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the discovery of Bab el-Gasus. The following note is an attempt to briefly present the shabti figurines from the lot kept at the Istanbul Archaeology Museums, which is part of this dispersed collection. In 1891, an important discovery was made by French Egyptologists E. Grebaut and G. Daressy at an archaeological tomb site called Bab el-Gasus, located near the Deir el-Bahari...

  • Ainos in Thrace: Research Perspectives in Historical Geography and
           Geoarchaeology

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Anca Dan, Sait Başaran, Helmut Brückner, Ercan Erkul, Anna Pint, Wolfgang Rabbel, Lyudmila Shumilovskikh, Dennis Wilken, Tina Wunderlich
Abstract: Before the closing of its lagoons and the progradation of the Hebros delta, Ainos took advantage of an almost insulate position, which made it one of the main hubs between the Greek Aegean and the Thracian hinterland. Annual Turkish archaeological excavations (since 1973) and international geoarchaeological research (since 2011-2012) have revealed several components of the polis’ territory (necropoleis, roads, anchoring sites, fortifications) and offered information about the ecological impact of the Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman occupation on the natural environment. This article is a short critical synthesis of these discoveries, which can serve as a basis for the reconstruction of Ainos’ environmental history.

  • Early Byzantine Structure at Gerenkuyu Mevkii of Yalı–Bodrum

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: İnci Türkoğlu
Abstract: Preparations are underway for a structure in the Gerenkuyu Locality of Yalı neighbourhood in Bodrum district to be restored. The building was first identified as a church of Late Antiquity and registered as cultural property. It features a figural floor mosaic with a pair of leopards jumping onto a crater. Later publications identified it as a bathhouse of the Early Byzantine period. However, during the cleaning work carried out in late 2018 as preparation for a restoration project, new details have been uncovered bringing out the necessity of revising the structure’s function. The author’s proposal for the structure’s function is a countryside residence of a squire from the Early Byzantine period.
