  • On the Gender Bazaar

    • Authors: Leora Auslander, Michelle Zancarini-Fournel, Denis Chevallier
Abstract: Denis Chevallier, curator of the exhibition “At the Bazaar of Gender, Feminine-Masculine in the Mediterranean” and Director of Research and Education at Marseille’s Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations (MuCEM), spoke with Leora Auslander and Michelle Zancarini-Fournel on 8 December 2013, after taking them on a tour of the exhibition. The exhibition, which closed on 6 January 2014, resulted in two publications, a volume co-authored by Denis Chevallier, Michel Bozon, Michelle Perrot, and Florence Rochefort and a short exhibition catalogue. The cover illustration on both features a woman “torera” in a toreador costume and red high heels, her left arm around a pressure cooker and her right hand gripping the handle of a sword: this self-portrait by Pilar Albarracin is an ironic nod to the advances women have made in the professions and other masculine domains (bullfighting) while still putting up with the daily grind (the pressure cooker). In his introduction, entitled “Gend...

  • Chelen Amenca (Dance with us)

    • Authors: Ellen Rothenberg
Abstract: In summer 2012, artists Ellen Rothenberg and Delia Popa participated in a cultural exchange project with a Roma family living in a small agrarian village in the county of Sibiu, a historic area in Transylvania. The second part of the project, an exhibition of new works generated in response to this experience, was presented at The Contemporary Galleries of The Brukenthal National Museum in fall 2013. “Chelen Amenca, (Dance With Us)” was organized by curator Anca Mihulet, with assistance for the village stay from anthropologist Oana Burcea. The exhibition and community project was realized with institutional support from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Brukenthal National Museum, and the Astra Museum Complex. In 2014, both artists presented performance/lectures based on their research at the National University of the Arts in Bucharest, with a grant from CEC Artslink. here to there Geographic scale is a means of staging the world and situating oneself in it. • Aurora of Arles, Queen of Dolls

    • Authors: Sylvie Sagnes
Abstract: The doll « Aurore », 1999. Image 10000000000001E00000024A7A6A4FB2.jpg (Collection of the Museon Arlaten, departemental museum of ethnography, Arles. Photo, J.L. Maby). This doll was born on December 25, 1999 in the town of Meynes. She was given by [her] godmother the seventeenth Queen of Arles, Aurora Guibaud, and Madame Marie-José Moreau, for the city of Arles’ transition into the twenty-first century. Bouen tous temps. Happiness and prosperity without end. Our ancestors exchanged these old Provençal good wishes when visiting each other on important feastdays, and at certain celebratory gatherings both public and private. Gérard Blanc, mayor of Meynes. These explanatory words on a document carrying the official stamp of the Meynes town hall note the Museon Arlaten’s acquisition of a duly inventoried “hand-delivered gift”, the doll “Aurora”, in January 2000. This miniature Arlésienne was not the first of her kind to be included in the collections of the hundred-year-old m...

  • Deploying material culture to write the history of gender and sexuality:
the example of clothing and textiles

    • Authors: Leora Auslander
Abstract: A material culture approach to textiles and clothing Many forms of material culture – furniture, jewelry, shoes, clothing, tableware, toys, kitchen equipment, bicycles and radios – have drawn the eye of historians of gender and sexuality. Any effort to discuss this expansive literature in one brief review essay would frustrate both the author and the reader; I focus here, therefore, on the particularly extensive gendered history of textiles. It is no accident that historians of gender and sexuality have been drawn to spinning, weaving, embroidery, knitting, quilting, and tailoring. All of these are not only generally highly feminized forms of labor, but the products themselves have been systematically used to construct gender. The advent of the suit for example, in the nineteenth century, both marked and helped to create a change in the definition of masculinity, and women’s struggle for the right to wear trousers was a key element in the early feminist movement. The mass marketing o...

  • Objects of gender and the gender of objects in French ethnology and
           sociology

    • Authors: Anne Monjaret
Abstract: In France, approaches to material and technical culture in traditional and contemporary societies, both here and elsewhere, typically belong to the field of ethnology, which has always seen objects as witnesses to societies, offering access to their social, symbolic and, therefore, gendered uses. Analysing everyday or ritual practices continues, as it has in the past, to lead ethnologists, joined in this by sociologists, to observe the ways in which roles are divided between men and women – in other words, to examine the construction of gendered identities in terms of material culture, without that becoming a subject of research in and of itself. Paola Tabet’s ground-breaking 1979 text, “Hands, Tools, Weapons”, most certainly contributed both to a broader realization of the advantages and relevance of these considerations, and to going beyond them, by choosing a critical reading of existing studies and a re-reading of social facts. Studying the “tools that men and women use” in hunt...

  • Introduction

    • Authors: Leora Auslander
Abstract: This issue of Clio. Femmes, genre, histoire entitled Making Gender with Things explores the importance of material culture to historians of gender and sexuality. Unusually for this journal, we focus here on a conceptual and methodological problematic, rather than on a theme. In most of our issues, we explicate how a life-stage, a historical period or moment, an occupation, a leisure activity, or a collective action has transformed gender relations and how men and women have shaped and experienced those changes. Here, by contrast, we seek to demonstrate the utility of a particular source – objects – for gender history. The specificity of material culture The observation that the two capacities that define the human are language and the use of tools to make things is a commonplace, but perhaps one to which historians should be more attentive. Both language and objects serve to communicate, to express thoughts and emotions, to make meaning, to remember, to dream, and many things besides...

  • To look like men of war: visual transformation narratives of African
           American Union Soldiers

    • Authors: Sarah Jones Weicksel
Abstract: This article examines clothing’s role in the transformation of African American slaves into Union soldiers during the American Civil War (1861-1865), exploring how and why military uniforms bore narrative weight in visual depictions of these men. Text, images, material objects, prints and photographs are examined within the context of nineteenth-century American conceptions of bodily management, posture, and developing theories on physical anthropology and phrenology. The article highlights the role of these images in constructing both a coherent narrative of redemption from slavery and a more inclusive, universal category of “men” that was linked to military service.

  • Gender and changing foodways in England’s late-medieval bourgeois
           households

    • Authors: Katherine L. French
Abstract: By the late Middle Ages, new varieties of dishware, clothing, and furniture were increasingly produced in and imported into English cities. The acquisition, use, and care of an expanding array of manufactured goods, not only made merchant and artisan lives more comfortable, it made them who they were. Yet as material culture scholars have repeatedly shown, the use and meaning of objects is neither stable nor guaranteed. Archaeologists argue that the new variety of dishware available gradually changed urban eating habits, with consequences for gender relations within the household. By reading two late medieval literary descriptions of all-women’s dinner parties against these material changes, this article looks at the impact of changing material culture on household dynamics.

  • Cloth, gender, politics: the Armagh Handkerchief, 1976

    • Authors: Louise Purbrick
Abstract: This article examines a handkerchief decorated by female members of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) imprisoned in Armagh Jail, Northern Ireland, in 1976. It attends to the materiality of a gendered and politicised object. The stenciling, colouring, signing and exchanging of this piece of cloth took place at the end of an early phase in the conflict ‘in and about’ Northern Ireland, a period known as ‘reactive containment’ and characterised by political imprisonment. Stitching upon cloth, a feminine pursuit, was adapted by male prisoners to become widespread republican practice in the 1970s. The Armagh handkerchief considered here, represents a contradictory and borrowed form but one in which the gendered properties of cloth persist. Thus, the article also attends to the meanings of cloth itself.

  • Child’s Play' Colonial commodities, ephemera, and the construction
           of the greater French family

    • Authors: Elizabeth Heath
Abstract: This article examines ephemera produced for French children in the interwar and early World War II period. Through a study of four different pieces related to chocolate, the article explores how imperially-themed objects like games, sticker books, and dioramas helped educate metropolitan children about the French nation and empire. The article argues that material objects like ephemera provide new opportunities to delve into the imaginaries of metropolitan boys and girls as they practiced, adopted, and interpreted their future roles as men and women of la plus grande France. This source-base therefore offers a novel way to examine the role that empire played in shaping gender in interwar France.
