  • Imperial Atmospheres: Race and Climate Control on the Niger

    • Authors: Dustin Valen
Abstract: This essay explores how nineteenth-century environmental technologies rendered climates mobile through an examination of a British-led mission to the Niger River in West Africa in 1841. To protect white sailors from the tropical African climate, expedition authorities invited Scottish ventilation engineer David Boswell Reid to consult on the design of three iron steam ships. Using a centralized air intake connected to a wind sail, Reid created a pressurized plenum below deck whose air he medicated by treating it with chemicals. The Niger mission exemplifies how Victorian ventilating practices were informed by unilineal theories of progress in which climate served as a key index for measuring animal, vegetable, and human progress. Regions of the globe with climates similar to Britain’s were considered ideal for colonization. Tropical climates, however, were thought to have damaging effects on European bodies. Climate was also blamed for impeding the rise of civilization. Draw...

  • Aesthetics of Comfort: A Third Moment in Costa Rican Histories of Tropical
           Architecture

    • Authors: Natalia Solano-Meza
Abstract: Histories of tropical architecture in Costa Rica could be constructed around three moments: the settlement of the United Fruit Company (ufco) in 1889, the visit of Otto H. Koenigsberger, director of the Department of Development and Tropical Studies during the opening of the School of Architecture of the University of Costa Rica in 1970, and finally, the constitution of a set of formal principles and images guiding the work of many architects in Costa Rica and justified by the need to provide comfort—or sensory contentment—in the tropical climate: an aesthetics of comfort. Although it is often considered a technical term, in our work, comfort operates also as a historical and aesthetic concept.
Our research suggests that the aesthetics of comfort has been disseminated through journals and exhibitions since the 1990s, while also absorbing experiences from the two previous moments. Consequently, it cannot be separated from histories of colonialism, extractivism, hygiene, and i...

  • Cole Roskam, Improvised City: Architecture and Governance in Shanghai,
           1843-1937

    • Authors: Christopher Cowell
Abstract: Surprisingly few studies of architecture and urbanism in English have presented a complete sweep of the turbulent history of the treaty port of Shanghai during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Christian Henriot’s Shanghai, 1927-1937 (1991) translated from the French in 1993, Leo Ou-fan Lee’s Shanghai Modern (1999), and Meng Yue’s Shanghai and the Edges of Empires (2006), have examined, in remarkably different registers, its burgeoning twentieth-century manifestations; while Samuel Y. Liang’s Mapping Modernity in Shanghai (2010) remains one of the few works to explore the spatial history of the city, particularly across its formative nineteenth-century development. Edward Denison and Guang Yu Ren’s visually splendid Building Shanghai (2006) is one of the rare studies to cover a wider span. Cole Roskam’s new book, Improvised City: Architecture and Governance in Shanghai, 1843–1937, arrives as a valuable addition. Broaching a century, it examines the visual politics of gov...

  • Peter H. Christensen, Germany and the Ottoman Railways: Art, Empire, and
           Infrastructure

    • Authors: Sam Grinsell
Abstract: This book is both a beautiful object and a significant scholarly achievement. It provides a history of the German production of the railways of the Ottoman Empire, covering the mid-nineteenth century up to the First World War. Peter Christensen argues that the projects surveyed here can help us think through ambiguous relationships that are part of the development of European colonialism, even where no official colonisation took place. In developing this history, he draws on a rich range of archival sources, and the book is generously illustrated with high quality images throughout. It will be relevant to all scholars of the built environment who have an interest in empire, modernity, infrastructure, and global history. Rather than presenting a chronological account, the book is thematically organised and divided into two parts. The first of these looks at how certain modes of thought produced German knowledge of the Ottoman Empire, with chapters on politics, geography, topography an...

  • Raphaèle Billé and Louise Curtis (eds.), Moderne Maharajah. Un mécène
           des années 1930

    • Authors: Johan Lagae
Abstract: Between 26 September 2019 and 12 January 2020, the Musée des arts décoratifs (mad) in Paris hosted an exhibition entitled Moderne Maharajah. Un mécène des années 1930. Bringing together a wealth of historical documents (drawings, photographs, letters, rare film footage, etc.) as well as 500 pieces of “Modern design,” from furniture to tapestry, sculpture, painting, and even cutlery, the exhibition provided fascinating and profound insights into what is described in the promotional brochure somewhat rhetorically as “the very first modernist construction of India, the Manik Bah palace.” The project was commissioned by Yeshwant Rao Holkar II, Maharajah of Indore, and constructed between 1930 and 1933 according to a design by the German architect Eckart Muthesius (1904-1989). In many respects, the palace of the Maharajah as a project speaks of the quick outreach of modern architecture and design beyond Europe. Eckart Muthesius was the son of the famous Hermann Muthesius, one of the pion...

  • A tale of two twin houses

    • Authors: Luce Beeckmans
Abstract: Central to Mirjana Lozanovska’s latest book Migrant Housing. Architecture, Dwelling, Migration (2019) is the question whether we can consider the migrant house as a distinct category within architectural historiography. This is of course a rhetorical question, as the book in an unparalleled way points out how migrants’ sociocultural inscriptions and contributions were hitherto completely lacking in the historiography of the architecture of housing. In her book, Lozanovska focuses on postwar migrant housing (1955-1975) of working-class immigrants within the transnational field between Southern Europe--the Republic of Macedonia in particular--and Australia. One highly original aspect of the book is that it addresses migrant housing at both ends of the migration chain. Hence, in addition to studying the material implications of migration to the immigrant cities, as is commonly the case in academic research, it also elucidates the homeland places of departure in the aftermath of the emi...

  • Architecture, Environment, Development: The United States and the Making
           of Modern Arabia, 1949-1961

    • Authors: Dalal Musaed Alsayer
Abstract: “Architecture, Environment, Development: The United States and the Making of Modern Arabia, 1949-61” examines the ways in which the architectures of U.S. development programs sought to transform the social, environmental, and urban fabric of the Arab World in the mid-twentieth century. The period between the establishment of President Harry S. Truman’s Point Four Program in 1949 and President John F. Kennedy’s U.S. Agency for International Development (usaid) in 1961 saw the genesis of a distinct global form of development, rooted in projects that divided regions into “rural” and “urban.” By examining four different projects in four nations, the dissertation aims to document this critical discourse, placing environment and development within the field of architecture, and tracing within them the emergence of (and resistances to) rural and urban models of development. The dissertation examines what these development projects looked like; what (and how) types of decisions were made; a...

  • Comfort, violence, care: decolonising tropical architecture at Blida, 1956

    • Authors: Hannah le Roux
Abstract: Uncomfortable histories Late 1956. Doctor Frantz Fanon has resigned from his post at the psychiatric hospital at Blida-Joinville in Algeria. The Gold Coast is a year away from independence. Maxwell Fry and Jane Drew, back in London from West Africa, and before that Chandigarh, are publishing a manual called Tropical Architecture in the Humid Zone: In Bogotá, a Pan-American network of planners and housing consultants is coalescing to support the usa’s interests in Latin America. Fidel Castro lands in Cuba to lead the rebellion against the Batista regime. The Middle Eastern Technical University, a project promoted by Charles Abrams and supported by the United Nations Technical Assistance Board, opens in Ankara, Turkey. A flu epidemic, probably from mutating duck and human viruses, is about to emerge from Guizhou, China. A new strain of architecture connects these moments. It accompanies the formation of new nation states, the spread of communism in Latin America, Western engagements wit...

  • Editorial: Historicizing Entanglements of Architecture and Comfort beyond
           the Temperate Zone

    • Authors: Jiat-Hwee Chang, Daniel J. Ryan
Abstract: Thermal comfort is the preoccupation of many building scientists, but it is something that architects and architectural historians seldom explore. For designers, the fact that comfort is an environmental attribute related to physical and psychological experience, expected to go unnoticed in the modern world, means that it is often taken for granted. Shouldn’t this taken-for-grantedness stir the curiosity of architectural historians' Don’t critical architectural historians share a tradition of interrogating unspoken assumptions and unquestioned norms' We certainly think so. In fact, we feel that comfort is not only an interesting topic for architectural historians to explore in itself, it is also productive for us to think of comfort in relation to its manifold architectural and environmental implications. Therefore, we focus on the histories of comfort and architecture in the themed section of the current and the upcoming issues of abe Journal, with the latter scheduled for publicat...

  • Caroline Herbelin, Architectures du Vietnam colonial. Repenser le
           métissage

    • Authors: Ronan Bouttier
