  • Can Ethnographic Filmmaking Truly Be Shared'

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Tami Liberman
Abstract: Collaborative ethnographic filmmaking has been celebrated as a practice that ethically challenges the traditional relationship between the observing researcher and the observed Other. At the same time, the collaborative mode raises the question whether it can truly dismantle the researcher's authority as it claims. This article addresses these issues by examining the writer's collaborative film Napps - Memoire of an Invisible Man, in which the main protagonist – a West African refugee living in Berlin without a work permit – stands behind the camera as cinematographer and storyteller while keeping his identity and face concealed. The article addresses Emmanuel Levinas's critique of Western thought's emphasis on accumulation of knowledge, and his call to replace the epistemological appropriation of the Other with an ethical one-on-one dialogue. Contextualizing the migrant's political and cultural invisibility, the article parallels the Western mindset with common objectifying visual r...

  • Never Silent Sights.

      Authors: Thomas John
Abstract: I share in this paper experiences and insights from my fieldwork in a local ethnic artist’s and media producer’s network in South-Mexico. As an attempt at transcultural collaboration, I took part in a nude photoshoot for a local photographer, as a subject also for his project. We swap and potentially subvert the common procedure, in which (visual) anthropologists produce knowledge and (audio-visual) representations about indigenous people, but not the other way around. Nevertheless, this event contributes also to my fieldwork and to my own ends. I discuss this photoshoot and some other works of the two artists involved, while contextualising this in relation to the local ethnographic context of a multi-ethnic society marked by a stark racial division and marginalisation. At the same time, this article draws on some selected perspectives of affect theory in the cultural studies (Gregg and Seigworth 2010, Slaby and Röttger-Rössler 2018, Ahmed 2004), to point out how the debated visual...

  • Provoking Film/Complicating Hierarchy

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Theresa George
Abstract: In 2014 and 2017, I accompanied the filmmakers Philipp Hartmann, Danilo Carvalho, and Helena Wittmann to the Sertão in the northeast of Brazil. In this desert-like region we gathered the material for Virar mar (2020), an experimental documentary about the meaning of water – its uses, politics, metaphorical potential, and (his)stories. My role in the team may be best described as a ‘film set ethnographer’ whose notes and observations were meant to reflect more on the journey, the film process, and perhaps even lend inspiration to the film itself. The encounter with another film team complicated the distinction between life and filmmaking as well as between fiction and reality. Thus, political, cultural, and aesthetic hierarchies also became blurred. By re-examining and reassembling the raw material we gathered on this journey – film, video, sound, and text – I hope to provoke sensual as well as critical readings of our findings.

  • Through Prisms

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: An van Dienderen, Natalie Gielen, Eléonore Yaméogo, with a commentary by Rosine Mbakam
Abstract: This article deals with the production process of the film PRISM. Belgian filmmaker An van. Dienderen invited Brussels based filmmaker Rosine Mbakam from Cameroon and Paris based filmmaker Eléonore Yaméogo from Burkina Faso to collaborate. Our skin color serves as a departure to explore our different experiences with the bias of the cinematographic medium, which favors Caucasian skin. An van. Dienderen proposed the system of “cadavre exquis”, the surrealist collective game. But this is a Eurocentric frame of reference, set by a white film maker, and backfired during the start of the collaboration. We therefore changed the format of the film in a chain letter, in which each filmmaker is invited to present her point of view. PRISM thus wishes to create multichronotopic links between different geographical and cultural groups so as to put the decolonial call by Walter Mignolo (2009) for epistemic disobedience into practice.

  • A Collaborative Filming Method with Characters and Crew

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Rossella Schillaci
Abstract: This article aims to reflect on the challenges of participatory film projects. The text analyses the method applied in the making of the short film Ghetto PSA. The main character is Jacob, a young man who arrived alone in Italy from French Guinea when he was 11 years old. He had lost his parents in Guinea. Today he is 27, hip hop music is his world, his personal outlet for expressing dreams, hopes and frustrations, and to no longer feel part of the 'ghetto'. The collaborative practice with the main character of the film is analysed focusing on the different stages of production, from fieldwork, to writing and shooting. The text also analyses the influence and relation of the different figures connected to a film production, such as the producer, the characters and the crew. The article will discuss how a process of negotiation was inevitable, embracing a participative approach that brought the project into the territories of ethnofiction. This process is especially evident in the cre...

  • The Voice of the Sierra Nevada

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Agata Lulkowska
Abstract: Pondering on the power of cultural preconceptions, this article examines the tension between self-representation and ‘representation from the outside’. Using the indigenous filmmaking practices of the Arhuaco community from Colombia as a case study, this article proposes that, thanks to the universal qualities of storytelling and narrative, film as a medium has the potential to bridge the intercultural gap and initiate an efficient knowledge exchange process. As such, it encapsulates the most effective way of establishing intercultural dialogue, regardless of the diverse backgrounds and aims of the creators and the audiences. The Arhuaco’s prolific auto-representation strategies which emerged as a response to violence and displacement served as efficient decolonisation strategy. The article demonstrates film’s potential to become a successful tool to gain agency by communities traditionally denied the option to participate in intercultural communication.

Authors: Sophia Ferreira Pinheiro, Patrícia Ferreira Pará Yxapy
Abstract: In this article, we will explore a relationship between Patrícia Ferreira Pará Yxapy and Sophia Pinheiro through image and filmmaking. A videography of a poetic encounter between two women, one indigenous and other non-indigenous, using visual anthropology in a delicate sense. As for methodological process, this is research made with a visual ethnography that thinks of the power of images as the production of meaning and collaboration. It was from this fissure that the artists made an ethnographic experience of video-letters - they constitute exchanges of videographic messages of the most diverse subjects. In this project, they exist between Patricia and Sophia, in the form of feminine and subjective questions, to show the relationship between with images and sounds. As Patricia says: "What I put out was inside me."

  • Shared Video Work and Shared Writing

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: José Alfredo Jiménez Pérez, Axel Köhler
Abstract: We examine the meaning of shared video work and shared writing in its epistemic dimension. Our reflections are based on our own experiences of working on the video Acteal. Ten years of impunity. How many more' produced by the communications department of the Civil Society Organisation ‘The Bees of Acteal’ in Chiapas, Mexico. We interpret the shared work in this production as an act of epistemic solidarity that contributes to the process of First Nations or First Peoples “sowing and growing” their own media at the margins of capitalist logic. We thus emphasise the appropriation of video as a technology of knowledge that can reinforce the oral and visual traditions of First Nations in their epistemic and aesthetic dimensions. We exemplify how The Bees have used video as a media strategy in their struggle for justice and peace and conclude that shared video work and shared writing are complementary strategies for an “ecology of knowledge” (Santos 2010) through epistemic solidarity.

  • Introduction

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Judith Albrecht, Florian Walter
Abstract: This special issue follows Walter Mignolo´s call for epistemic disobedience and combines it with MacDougall´s work on transcultural cinema. The films and texts of this special issue support our hypothesis that more equally balanced modes of communication can trigger transcultural processes of understanding as inter-personal and cultural encounters are negotiated on- and off-screen. The decolonial discourse refers to an interplay of theory and practice in order to break continuities of coloniality. Decoloniality insists on a radical transformation that can only be realized through a radical praxis (Ghaddar and Caswell 2018). Film is not just a form of representation. Social relations are enacted in front of the camera and filmmaking itself is a social practice. How does decolonization relate to the production of visual images and films' In their writings, Enrique Dussel (1995) and Anibal Quijano (1992) argue that European modernism is not to be localized in the Enlightenment but in th...

  • Value, Correspondence, and Form: Recalibrating Scales for a Contemporary
           Anthropology of Art (Epilogue)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Jonas Tinius
Abstract: Reflecting on two sets of analytical trajectories of the articles in this special issue — ‘institutions, histories, and spheres of valuation’ (Thomas Fillitz and Tamara Schild) and ‘immersion, correspondence, and form’ (Alex Flynn/Lucy Bell and Paolo Favero) —, I argue for an attuned anthropology of the contemporary. This latter focuses on the tensions of art and aesthetics across scales of glocality, and might benefit from what I would like to call an anachronistic and anatopical positionality and approach. I thus consider us in a trans-anthropological phase, in which anthropology no longer documents, but constitutes these fields itself. This affords a greater reflexivity about the collaborative modalities and theoretical value generated through our scholarship as anthropologists; it also asks for a recalibrated ethnographic awareness of the co-articulation of art and anthropology at all scales of their encounter.
