  • Underground Atmospheres. Renewing the debate.

    • Abstract: Underground Atmospheres Cities are moving underground. Cultural centres, data centres, organic urban farms, logistic centres are multiplying inside the bowels of metropolises worldwide, as realised/imagined equipment after the development/reappropriation of underground spaces. Such abundance echoes with the sophistication of projects, meetings of international professionals, as well as publications in special issues of architecture journals, which also demonstrate the buzz animating debates on the matter among professionals and scientists. The concept of underground spaces has emerged over the last twenty years (Admiraal & Cornaro, 2018) as a unifying issue for the professions working with the Urban (e.g. architects, engineers, geometricians, geographers). For a long time considered as a ‘residue’ of the city, neglected by actors, bereft of natural light and air, underground spaces have responded to the needs for storing and burying vital functions of the city (all sorts of networks)...

  • Ambiances souterraines. Quel renouveau du débat '

    • Abstract: Ambiances souterraines La ville passe au souterrain.

  • Miasmas in the theatre: Encountering carceral atmospherics
           in Pests (2014)

    • Authors: Molly McPhee
Abstract: In Vivienne Franzmann’s Pests (Clean Break, 2014), two rat-women scamper around a putrefied “nest” of rotting mattresses. Written following residencies in women’s prisons, Franzmann intended Pests to raise awareness on what imprisoned women frequently report as part of their lived experience: poverty; domestic violence and sexual assault; and childhoods spent in care. “It is brutal, but it is authentic,” she says (Gentleman, 2014). The aftermath of prison becomes, in the carceral imaginary of Pests, intertwined with waste, disease and animality. In this, I suggest, it performs a miasma of dispossession and social exclusion. In this article I explore Pests as an example of what I call miasmatic performance. I investigate the aesthetics and politics of carceral atmospherics produced by this theatre, thinking through how they both elicit, and simultaneously confound, a collective desire to attribute a clear function to prison in society.

  • The Theatricality of Organizational Atmosphere

    • Authors: Lydia Jørgensen
Abstract: In recent years, it has been argued that the public sector should stage citizen experiences to put the human before the system. The paper explores how a public organization stages such citizen experience in practice. In order to do that, the paper builds on Gernot Böhme’s understanding of atmosphere as a scenographic practice, reflecting how aesthetic practices have become pivotal in an ongoing aesthetization process in society as an enhanced focus on experiental value. The paper engages with contemporary theatre to critically elaborate the theatricality of staging organizational atmospheres as both a social and political concern. While the paper studies how the staging of atmospheres can be theoretically understood and empirically investigated, the paper argues that the staging of organizational atmosphere contributes to thinking organization as an aesthetic phenomenon.

  • In Search of Lost Weather: Temporal Reflexivity and Ecological Awareness
           in Participatory Performance

    • Authors: Jamie Harper

  • Ecological combustion: the atmospherics of the bushfire
           as choreography

    • Authors: Rachel Fensham
Abstract: This paper examines the atmospheres generated by the elemental power of bushfires as embodiment, invention and reconstruction through choreography. Drawing upon Bachelard’s analysis of the phenomenology of fire leads to an appreciation of its substance and symbolic volatility, that is interlaced with an understanding of fire’s place in the Australian environment from both settler and indigenous perspectives. The close examination of several dances, that use different expressive vocabularies and structures, provides a means to access the experience of fire as an affect and a moving vital force in expressive formations that record real historical events and their impact. The atmosphere becomes then both the generator and the residue of movement. In conclusion, the paper gives attention to debates about climate change, in the context of the Anthropocene and ecofeminism, and suggests that the bushfire is more destructive than it ever has been, not because of its “wild nature” but becaus...

  • Staging Atmospheres: Editorial introduction to the first volume

    • Authors: Chloé Déchery, Martin Welton
Abstract: This special issue of Ambiances seeks to address issues raised by the emerging theatrical paradigm within international scholarship on atmosphere and ambiance. On the one hand, the issue seeks to investigate why the theatre seems to present itself as such an acute example of what Thibaud (2015) has termed the ‘affective tonality’ of aesthetic experience for scholarship that does not necessarily attend to the study of performance per se. On the other hand, it concerns what, in turn, the practice and study of theatre has to learn from enquiries across a range of other disciplines in which features of theatre and the theatrical as aesthetic, spatial and/or social generators of atmospheres have been regularly deployed by scholars in architecture, geography and philosophy. What might greater insight into the production and reception of theatre’s atmospheric conditions lend to enquiries that draw upon it analogically and/or in exemplary terms' How can the staging of atmospheres within the...

  • Immersivity: An Interdisciplinary Approach to Spaces
           of Immersion

    • Authors: Florian Freitag, Céline Molter, Laura Katharina Mücke, Helena Rapp, Damien B. Schlarb, Elisabeth Sommerlad, Clemens Spahr, Dominic Zerhoch
Abstract: This article proposes to shift the scholarly focus from the conceptually, terminologically, and methodologically fuzzy notion of “immersion” to the concept of “immersivity,” and thus from a discussion of experiences to an analysis of the productive forces that enable such experiences (aesthetic and otherwise). Using case studies from theme parks, film, and immersive theatre to video games and immersive educational spaces, we argue that immersivity is a distinct term that denotes an inherent quality of objects in general and of mediated, delineated, real and virtual spaces in particular. We assume that in all of these examples, spatial qualities and modes interact in particular ways to facilitate immersion. Elucidating these interactions requires discussing examples from different disciplinary contexts. It is precisely through this interdisciplinary approach that we take a first step towards understanding immersivity, as we pinpoint cross-disciplinary congruences wherever possible. T...
