  • Expressions of motion events in German: an integrative constructionist
           approach for FLT

    • Authors: Sabine De Knop
Abstract: Expressions of motion reflect the conceptualization of events central to human beings. Most studies on motion have focused on one facet of motion (e.g. typological differences, speaker’s perspective, location/motion prepositions) or on one specific construction like the caused motion construction or the intransitive locative construction. This means that they have dealt with isolated, scattered constructions, while ignoring overall conceptual and linguistic specificities as well as interconnections between constructions. The paper adopts an alternative approach which starts from the construal of the motion concept, the semantics of constructions and the lexicalization preferences in a specific language, thereby focusing on the family of German constructions of directed motion. The family concept can be exploited in foreign language teaching to foster a more efficient learning of such constructions. The paper discusses some strategies based on scaffolding and embodiment.

  • Ranger, Graham, Discourse Markers: An Enunciative Approach

    • Authors: Camille Debras
Abstract: Graham Ranger’s 2018 book Discourse Markers: an Enunciative Approach is an original study of discourse markers, based on the Theory of Enunciative and Predicative Operations (TEPO). After a general introduction (Chapter 1), the author proposes a theoretical chapter (Chapter 2). Chapters 3 to 7 each focus on the case study of a specific discourse marker : anyway (chapter 3), indeed and in fact (chapter 4), yet and still (chapter 5), like (chapter 6) and I think (chapter 7). Chapter 8 presents a general conclusion. Each chapter can perfectly be read independently from the rest of the book, should the reader have, for instance, a specific interest in a given form. Footnotes and references are found at the end of each chapter, which facilitates the reading of the chapters independently from one another. The book is very easy to navigate thanks to the summaries and reformulations provided at the end of chapter sections and chapters. The Theory of Enunciative and Predicative Operations (T...

  • Bacchi, Annalisa, Digonnet, Rémi & Standford, Jodi L. (Eds.), Sensory
Perceptions in Language, Embodiment and Epistemology

    • Authors: Wenjie Hong
Abstract: Sensory organs can be viewed as a bridge connecting the human body with the environment, thus allowing interactions between our body and its surroundings. Sensory experience is therefore crucial to our understanding of the world and linguistic processes involved in it. The present book, Sensory perceptions in Language, Embodiment and Epistemology, represents a major contribution to highlighting how sensory perceptions shape our linguistic representation of the world from philosophical, linguistic, and psychological perspectives. The book is a themed volume of 11 original chapters divided into two sections, distinguishing theoretical perspectives (chapters 1-4) from applied ones (chapters 5-11). In chapter 1, Orians highlights that our mind is molded by our ancestors’ adaptive responses to short-term changes in the local environment. Their adaptations to past environment leave their imprint on our mind and remain operational, even though some behaviors are no longer valuable in the co...

  • The representativeness of the metaphors of death, disease, and sex in a TV
           series corpus

    • Authors: Adeline Terry
Abstract: The aim of this article is to study the metaphors for the taboo topics of death, disease, and sex in a corpus constituted of the first two seasons of five American award-winning TV series (Six Feet Under, House, M.D, Grey’s Anatomy, Sex and the City, How I Met your Mother). The main research question is the following: are the metaphors in TV series representative of those that can be found in naturally occurring conversation' The first part of this article exposes the theoretical background for the study of metaphor (Conceptual Metaphor Theory) and the methodology (MIP, Pragglejaz group) used to collect the data. The results that were obtained are briefly presented in the second part: a total of 393 metaphorical occurrences were taken into account (122 death metaphors, 127 sex metaphors, 144 disease metaphors). These metaphors were classified according to their source domains. In a third part, those results were compared to the results of previous studies on metaphor in non-fictiona...

  • In defense of frequency generalizations and usage-based linguistics. An
answer to Frederick Newmeyer’s “Conversational corpora : when big is
           beautiful”

    • Authors: Maarten Lemmens
Abstract: In his paper “Conversational corpora : when big is beautiful”, Newmeyer sets himself the goal of evaluating the relationship between corpus size and conclusions drawn from corpora regarding questions of grammatical theory. He formulates a strong critique against corpus research based on too small (conversational) corpora and in doing so, explicitly rejects the usage-based approach to language in which they are embedded. He argues that, unless they are based on large (conversational) corpora, frequency analyses do not give sufficiently reliable analyses compared to introspection-based analyses. In this response, I will counter some of the critique that Newmeyer levels against usage-based (or frequency-based) models, showing that, first of all, his criticism needs to be reevaluated and secondly, frequency-based analyses (and a usage-based approach more generally) do imply a radically different view on grammar which surpasses some of the shortcomings of introspection-based models.

  • How large should a dense corpus be for reliable studies in early language
           acquisition '

    • Authors: Christophe Parisse
Abstract: Dense corpora have been put forward as necessary tools for corpus studies of language acquisition. Despite their great interest, they are not yet frequently used, probably because of the high cost involved in their creation. The goal of the present study was to predict the optimal size of a dense longitudinal corpus when used to infer, manually or automatically, the details of lexical or syntactic development in child language. The results show that corpora of at least 30 to 40 one-hour recordings are necessary, but that longer corpora using the same protocol provide little new information. Dense corpora are indeed very useful, but do not need to be overly large to study grammatical development. This has important consequences for corpus-building projects, which can be optimized. The existence of a limit to the amount of information provided by large corpora also has important consequences for linguistic theory, as this helps locate the threshold between learning frozen forms and ge...

  • Handling Sign Language handshapes annotation with the typannot typefont

    • Authors: Patrick Doan, Dominique Boutet, AdrienContesse, Claudia S. Bianchini, Claire Danet, Morgane Rébulard, Jean-François Dauphin, Léa Chevrefils, Chloé Thomas, Mathieu Reguer
Abstract: The typographic system Typannot, presented in this paper, allows the analyst to transcribe Sign Language (SL) signs. The structuring of this system is described in this presentation. It encodes three layers of information : parameters, parts and features. In order to visualize them at a typographic level, we adopted four design principles : genericity, readability, modularity and scriptability. Together, they guide us in the representation and integration of the three layers of information. The system can transcribe an SL sign with accuracy and display the transcription in a flexible way by means of two types of representation forms : a generic form and a composed form. These forms facilitate transcription and have the potential to help other practices (for example : lexicography or writing SL). The functioning of this typographic system is described here through the parameter of handshape ; the typefaces of the other parameters have been organized in the same way. A virtual keyboar...

  • Conversational corpora : when “big is beautiful”

    • Authors: Frederick J. Newmeyer
Abstract: The goal of this paper is to examine the relationship between corpus size and conclusions drawn from corpora regarding questions of grammatical theory. Many linguists, typically those with a ‘usage-based’ orientation, assert that introspective data, unlike corpus-derived data, is of little relevance to the construction of the correct theory of language. This paper challenges that view, arguing that introspective data and corpus-derived data do not lead to different conclusions about the nature of linguistic theory.
