  • Amélie Le Renard, Le Privilège occidental. Travail, intimité et
           hiérarchies postcoloniales à Dubaï

    • Authors: Claire Beaugrand
Abstract: “I feel a book like this was long due” was the reaction of a Dubai‑born Indian research student with whom I discussed the content of the latest book by Amélie Le Renard, Le privilege occidental [the Western privilege] that analyses the enabling factors of the economic and racial domination of the Westerners living in Dubai. Undoubtedly a welcome contribution —in particular to this mature student, author of an earlier piece who related wittily the following lived experience: “the corporate world is perhaps the only place one can expect a real intermingling of cultures in a cosmopolitan city like Dubai. But it’s also where one sees the worst forms of segregation. A Westerner is likely to earn at least 10 per cent more than their Asian counter part for the same job in the United Arab Emirates. […] The multinational company I worked for close to a decade had a majority of British expats in managerial positions. Therefore, they would not really join you for lunch in the first place. Most...

  • Counter‑Narratives through the lens of al‑Baraddūnī: The case of the
           1962 Yemeni revolution

    • Authors: Noura Kamal
Abstract: One of the main features of Yemeni historiography is that for many centuries it focused on the history of rulers and the biographies of elite scholars. Since the revolution and the end of the Yemeni Imamate in 1962, scholars such as ʻAbd Allāh al‑Baraddūnī began to focus on popular narratives that retold history from the vantage point of those who, historically, have been marginalized by Yemen’s ruling elites. Al‑Baraddūnī’s endeavours to rehabilitate popular narratives and historiography were a prominent reaction to the dominant formal history, literature and art during the Imamate, and were triggered by the spirit of the 1962 revolution in Yemen’s north. This paper explores how al‑Baraddūnī worked towards the rehabilitation of the roles of formerly marginalized people in Yemen, and how folk history provided hitherto undocumented and “unofficial” knowledge about the changing social, political and power relations in twentieth‑century Yemen.

  • ‘Dancing Between Raindrops’: Politics Education in the
           Sultanate of Oman 2012–2019

    • Authors: Leon T. Goldsmith
Abstract: Drawing on a five‑year participant‑observer study the evolution of politics education in the Sultanate of Oman from 2012 to 2019 is discussed. The aim is to shed light on the significance and implications of new explicitly politics‑related curricula introduced at Sultan Qaboos University shortly after ‘Arab Spring’ protests shook the country in 2011. The argument is presented that Oman stands at a pivotal juncture in its education policy in the humanities and the social sciences. The choice is between retreating into the type of state‑centric and uncritical curricula common among the authoritarian systems of the Middle East and North Africa, or continuing the partial opening of an educational evolution that could more effectively equip the next generation of Omani leaders to help face challenges that lie ahead.

  • L’innommable virus et la culture

    • Authors: Hanan Hashem

  • Houthis in the Making: Nostalgia, Populism, and the Politicization of
           Hashemite Descent

    • Authors: Luca Nevola
Abstract: During the autumn of 2012 the Hashemites (sāda) of a hijra I will call Kuthra, located southwest of the capital Sanaa, gradually rephrased their identity in political terms. Over the course of one year, most of them turned into Houthi supporters, prompting an equal and opposite reaction in the Qaḥṭānī Arabs of the village that defiantly adhered to the Islah party. Drawing on extended fieldwork in highland Yemen (2009–2013), this paper tackles identity politics by examining the subtle interplay of life and family stories, modes of livelihood and social institutions in a ‘glocal’ world.
By exploring the family stories of two young sāda, the article argues that the rapid and unprecedented social and material changes that interested Kuthra during the last century laid the groundwork for nostalgic representations of a lost past. Building on this emotional foundation, Houthi discourse provided a political narrative capable of orchestrating nostalgic feelings into a coherent life project, t...

  • Editorial

    • Authors: Laurent Bonnefoy, Abbès Zouache
Abstract: While the initial purpose of this 13th issue of Arabian Humanities was to propose a random set of articles on the Arabian Peninsula, some themes end up imposing themselves through the proposals sent by our colleagues, generating a form of coherence. This issue clearly sets a specific emphasis on matters linked to narratives, knowledge and its transmission, be it through books, education, memory or genealogy. While not ignoring other societies, our current issue focuses much on Yemen showing how much, despite the war, new approaches and problematics can be developed, building or not on analysis from afar. The link the CEFAS maintains with researchers and intellectuals in Yemen is one that our academic community is seeking to preserve, if not develop. Their voices are more than ever necessary. Literature can become a useful entry to understand changes in a society, and analyze what (counter‑)narratives are emerging. Franck Mermier’s proposal to pick and translate recent texts written b...

  • A New Era of Virtual ‘Deference’

    • Authors: Hasan Ashkanani
Abstract: April 30, 2020 To my colleagues and to the wider CEFAS community, I am writing to share my experiences related to the COVID‑19 pandemic and to offer my support and encouragement. As we all face an undeniably unique and unprecedented time, we can be supportive of one another and be productive through modes of modern communication. March 9th was a rainy and cloudy day. The inclement weather did nothing to distract from the beauty of Paris nor my intent to attend a conference and tend to some academic pursuits. I was in Paris for the Science Po meeting on Anthropology and War. I intended to visit the Louvre Museum during the break, but to my surprise, I saw a long line of visitors waiting to enter the museum. I was told that the museum staff was refusing to receive people due to the COVID‑19 crisis — which WHO would declare on March 11th to be a pandemic. I did not see anyone wearing mask‑and‑glove, including people waiting in the line, nor in Paris during my walk to shops in or around t...

    • Authors:
