  • Hegemonic Past: Exclusion of Subaltern Histories in NCERT Textbooks

      Authors: Swarali Patil
      Pages: 9 - 21
Abstract: ANTYAJAA: Indian Journal of Women and Social Change, Volume 5, Issue 1, Page 9-21, June 2020.
History textbooks are always a site of contestation. Therefore, present political struggles for maintaining hegemony or overthrowing it play on the site of history. History as discipline has always been dominated by androcentric values. Therefore, feminist historiography was emerged which not only criticized existing androcentric historiographies but suggested new ways to do history. This article tries to analyze inclusions and exclusions within history textbooks. In the first part of the article I will try to analyze why certain histories never became part of the textbook and what are the sources that are used to write history. In this article I will analyze VIII standard NCERT history textbooks in India (Central level Government textbooks) through caste and gender lenses. In 2005 the theme of NCERT History textbooks changed from ‘our past’ (singular) to ‘our pasts’ (plural). However, this change does not reflect in the content of the textbook. I am using content analysis as a method to analyze pictures and texts. I will also try to contextualize the text within time and space. The exclusion and inclusion of history in the textbooks depends on the contemporary caste, patriarchal hegemony in our society. The dominant mainstream history has become part of these textbooks, but subaltern history is excluded from it. In this article I will also talk about the Dalit histories, Dalit women histories and tribal histories which are silenced as ‘other’ and remained part of counterculture but did not become part of these mainstream textbooks. In the later part of the article, I will try to look in what way the histories are altered to fit in a particular framework especially the histories of subalterns. At the end I will focus on how textbooks always build the idea of hegemonic nation and nationalism in students mind. Therefore, through this article I will analyze the ways through which the ‘other’ is being silenced in history textbooks.

Abstract: ANTYAJAA: Indian Journal of Women and Social Change, Volume 5, Issue 1, Page 22-39, June 2020.
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) estimates that the annual worldwide number of honour killings is as high as 5,000 women and girls, though some non-governmental organizations (NGOs) estimate as many as 20,000 honour killings annually worldwide. Despite limited statistics, research shows that honour killings occur amongst women of different ages, religions, and social status, wealth, education, and location. The limited understanding of each country context, combined with scarce data on honour killings, has contributed to the continued hidden nature of this shocking form of violence. In this article, we seek to address this gap through a descriptive analysis of honour killings in India and Pakistan. In the absence of other data, we conduct a content analysis of media-reported honour killings in these two countries to examine key similarities and differences in the motivations, types, and other characteristics of honour killings across these countries and highlight any key risk and protective factors that emerge.

  • No Honour in Honour Killing: Comparative Analysis of Indian Traditional
           Social Structure vis-à-vis Gender Violence

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Kaushambi Kaushal
      Pages: 52 - 69
Abstract: ANTYAJAA: Indian Journal of Women and Social Change, Volume 5, Issue 1, Page 52-69, June 2020.
India is always proud of its democracy, secularism between and after so many years of Independence. However, ethos of marriage remains the same. Marriages tend to be a holy sacrament solemnized by families. In some of the cases, young innocent women are subjected to horrific and horrendous waves of massacring for choosing the life partner according to their wish and choice. Moreover, this choice makes the women vulnerable to the alleged supreme caste, religious group and old guards of the society. A killing in the name of honour inculcates torture and rejection of equalitarianism, which is a corner stone of the Indian Constitution. Furthermore, it manifests how the value of feudalism and patriarchy is rooted in our social system in some corner. The qualitative- and quantitative-based comparative analyses of the study would depict various perspectives of violence, its vulnerability and peril nature towards some of Indian Women. In this backdrop, it is difficult to state the precise number of Honour Killings because many cases go unreported. In some of the cases, the perpetrators go unpunished and the concept of the honour becomes justified in the eyes of societies. It is estimated by the United Nations Population Funds that 5,000 women and girls are killed by their own family members. According to the recent report of National Crime Record Bureau, 356 cases of Honour Killing were reported along with 65 cases of culpable homicide in India. There are laws in Indian Penal Code for the Honour Killings; but it is just an antidote to such dishonourable practices. Law should be amended and made stringent towards it. It is manifested that a wide range of moderation is needed in order to effectively battle against patriarchal crimes and women’s sovereignty in India. It is not out of the context to mention here that ‘The Freedom of Belief doesn’t mean Freedom to Kill. Everyone has right to live there life with dignity, grace and equality. A woman deserves respect with dignity. There is No Honour in Honour Killings’.

The role of women in Telangana statehood movement has immense importance and has paved a way for the realization of the dreams of women who aspired for emancipation from human trafficking, dowry, domestic violence and liquor mafia. The role of Belli Lalitha in the 1990s sparked a wave of movement with her folk songs to mobilize people to demand their rights. Belli Lalitha’s journey started with ups and downs as a school dropout, married early, labourer in a cotton mill, labour activist, folk singer and political leader, but her sudden murder by the goons and political leaders changed the pace of the movement from peak level to ground. To mobilize millions of people in the final phase of the Telangana movement, the folk song tradition familiarized at grass-root level by Belli Lalitha occupies an important position.

Prostitution is currently a contentious issue in India where they are estimated to be in the range of over 2 million female sex workers. Majority of them venture into prostitution due to lack of resources to support themselves or their children. Most do not choose this profession out of choice, but they do it due to necessity. Such is a case in Meerut Kabari Bazaar, that is, Junk Market where people trade in all kinds of goods from spices, clothes, grocery and also sex.

  • Criminalizing Nomadic Femininity: Colonial Trail of the Kathua
           Rape–Murder

A reading of Michael Kennedy’s (1908) treatise on ‘criminal classes’ in British India offers fresh perspective on the Kathua rape–murder in historical terms. What emerges through an exercise that connects past to present, colony to nation, is how the pending fate of a Bakarwal girl was first inscribed in colonial ink for being a nomad, and later fulfilled in Independent India for being a Muslim. The manner in which the colonial programme of stigmatizing nomadic societies, particularly its women and children, is being adapted, intensified and given renewed direction through Hindu hyper-nationalism is thus underscored. The failure of civil society to recognize the refraction of colonial power in a communal atmosphere, and thus come up with promising alternatives to prevent such crimes, is further highlighted.
