  • Dynamic asymptotic model of rolling bearings with a single fault in the
           inner raceway

      Abstract: Advances in Mechanical Engineering, Volume 13, Issue 10, October 2021.
      In the previous models of rolling bearings with a single fault, the displacement deviation caused by the collision of the fault to the rolling element changes instantly. However, the displacement deviation should change gradually. Here, the asymptotic idea is introduced to describe the change of the displacement deviation. The calculation method of the deviation is given. An asymptotic model of rolling bearings with an inner raceway fault is constructed. Then, the simulation of the SKF6205 bearing with a single fault is carried out. The differences between the previous model and the asymptotic model for the responses and the displacement deviation are compared. The effects of the speed and fault size on the dynamic characteristics are analyzed. Finally, the experiments are carried out to corroborate the rationality of the constructed model. The research results can provide theoretical support for the dynamic analysis, fault diagnosis, and reliability analysis of rolling bearings.

  • Hybrid propulsion spacecraft formation control around the planetary
           displaced orbit

      Abstract: Advances in Mechanical Engineering, Volume 13, Issue 10, October 2021.
      This paper aims to investigate the feasibility of using the combination of solar radiation pressure and Coulomb force as a propellantless control method for spacecraft formation around the planetary displaced orbit. Firstly, the dynamical equation of spacecraft formation is derived and linearized. Based on the linearized dynamic model, an integral sliding mode controller (ISMC) is designed. Aimed to stabilize the spacecraft formation, the control method is proposed to adjust the product of the charge and the attitude angles of two spacecrafts. Finally, numerical simulations are conducted and the results show that the controller can make the formation achieve the desired configuration with favorable control performances.

  • Power system parameter matching and particle swarm optimization of battery
           underground loader

      As part of the ongoing research into new energy technology, battery-powered underground loaders have emerged. However, there have been few studies on power system optimization and matching for these battery underground loaders to date. This paper, which takes a 3-m3 battery underground loader as its research object, determines the loader’s optimal operating point through study of the power response characteristics of the loader’s motor under various working conditions. The effects of different power batteries on the working conditions are analyzed, and the loader’s component parameters are matched. Additionally, an optimization model of the driving system of the battery underground loader is constructed. On the basis of the driving operation characteristics of the loader, the particle swarm optimization algorithm is proposed to optimize the operating conditions of the loader’s driving motor. The results show that the transmission ratio is reduced after optimization. The single-cycle energy consumption is reduced by approximately 1.98% and the number of cycles in the health status of the power battery’s state-of-charge increases by approximately 1.91%, which verifies the feasibility of use of the particle swarm algorithm in the loader optimization problem. This work can serve as a reference for related theoretical research on underground loaders.

      In this study, a new computing model by developing the strength of feed-forward neural networks with Levenberg-Marquardt Method (NN-BLMM) based backpropagation is used to find the solution of nonlinear system obtained from the governing equations of unsteady squeezing flow of Heat and Mass transfer behaviour between parallel plates. The governing partial differential equations (PDEs) for unsteady squeezing flow of Heat and Mass transfer of viscous fluid are converting into ordinary differential equations (ODEs) with the help of a similarity transformation. A dataset for the proposed NN-BLMM is generated for different scenarios of the proposed model by variation of various embedding parameters squeeze Sq, Prandtl number Pr, Eckert number Ec, Schmidt number Sc and chemical-reaction-parameter [math]. Physical interpretation to various embedding parameters is assigned through graphs for squeeze Sq, Prandtl Pr, Eckert Ec, Schmidt Sc and chemical-reaction-parameter [math]. The processing of NN-BLMM training (T.R), Testing (T.S) and validation (V.L) is employed for various scenarios to compare the solutions with the reference results. For the fluidic system convergence analysis based on mean square error (MSE), error histogram (E.H) and regression (R.G) plots is considered for the proposed computing infrastructures performance in term of NN-BLMM. The results based on proposed and reference results match in term of convergence up to 10-02 to 10-08 proves the validity of NN-BLMS. The Optimal Homotopy Asymptotic Method (OHAM) is also used for comparison and to validate the results of NN-BLMM.

  • Structural analysis and optimization of an automotive propeller shaft

      It is a trend to implement weight reduction in parts in recent years when developing a new car. This trend is because weight reduction is essential to respond to tightening environmental regulations. In other words, parts manufacturers of body, chassis, and power train systems have made considerable efforts to reduce weight from the proto design stage. This study performed structural analysis and optimization for weight reduction of a propeller shaft for a passenger car. The natural frequency and the durability of the developing propeller shaft were examined through finite element analyses and tests. Then, optimization was accomplished by focusing on the weight reduction of the tubes made of given steel material. In this process, the metamodel-based optimization technique, kriging interpolation, was applied, and the weight was reduced by 5.3% based on the propeller shaft and 14.1% based on the tube. ANSYS Workbench was used for structural analysis, an in-house program was used to build the kriging model, and MATLAB was used for optimization.

  • Computational analysis of hydromagnetic boundary layer stagnation point
           flow of nano liquid by a stretched heated surface with convective
           conditions and radiation effect

      In this study, the boundary layer phenomena for stagnation point flow of water-based nanofluids is being observed with the upshot of MHD and convective heating on a nonlinear stretching surface. To develop a fundamental flow model, a boundary layer approximation is done, which signifies time-dependent momentum, energy, and concentration expressions. Through a proper transformation framework, the modeled boundary layer partial differential equations (PDEs) have been diminished to a dimensionless system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs). With the assistance of a built-in algorithm in Mathematica software, the fundamental flow equations are analyzed numerically by imposing a shooting technique explicitly. A stability and convergence analysis were also unveiled, and the ongoing investigation was found to have converged. The effect of mathematical abstractions on velocity, energy, and concentration is plotted and discussed. The influence of skin-friction and Nusselt number on the sheet are debated for the various values of important parameters.

  • High-capacity stacking apparatus for thermoforming machine – Part II:
           Structural design of the adjustable stacker driving mechanism

      Part II presents the structural design of a high-capacity adjustable stacker mechanism for thermoforming machines which enables the receival, transport and stacking of cup-like products. It was previously established (please see Part I) that a four-bar linkage mechanism with a one-way clutch is the optimal solution for realizing the intermittent motion of the stacker conveyor. The main objective here is to enable the change of the stacker work parameters, with the goal of changing and adjusting the work stroke of the conveyor. Accordingly, there are two main requirements the solution needs to fulfill. The first is that of the regulation characteristic’s function – the relationship between the change of the work stroke and the change of the regulation parameter, must be linear, and the second is that it allows for regulation within a wide range. Due to this, the adopted solution proposed that two links have variable lengths. The input link should have discreet length values which correspond to different values of the conveyor work stroke, while the output link length should be continuously variable, within a narrow range thus ensuring linear regulation characteristic. Finally, it should be noted that this solution makes the stacker compatible with a wide array of products, which increases the productivity and flexibility, adjusting the stacker to receive a different product can be done quickly and easily and avoiding a halt in the production as it takes less time to adjust the stacker than the thermoforming machine.

  • Lightweight and green design of general bridge crane structure based on
           multi- specular reflection algorithm

      At present, there are some problems that need to be solved in crane steel structure design, such as heavy self-weight of finished structure, high production energy consumption, and huge manufacturing costs. In view of this, a lightweight design method that meets the green product design principle is proposed for crane structure. In this method, an improved new swarm intelligence optimization algorithm named the multi-specular reflection algorithm (M-SRA) is proposed. This algorithm combines the specular reflection algorithm (SRA) with the traditional swarm intelligence optimization algorithm, which has higher computational efficiency. After that, M-SRA is applied to crane steel structure optimization. The results show that the improved algorithm has higher global searching ability and computational efficiency than traditional population intelligence optimization algorithms. The research in this paper provides a reliable design method for the green lightweight design of crane steel structure and a reference for the green design of mechanical products.

  • Prediction of thrust force and torque in canal preparation process using

      Root canal preparation is a vital procedure during the treatment of pulposis and periapical periodontitis. However, the improper control of thrust force and torque in root canal preparation will cause nerve damage and cell necrosis. The aim of this study was to investigate and optimize the main factors influencing thrust force and torque and to establish an efficient predictive model for root canal preparation. This study was conducted on fresh bovine bones due to the similarity of structure and density with human teeth. A novel experimental platform was first built to measure the force and torque in canal preparation of different parameters. The effect of the experimental results on thrust force and torque was investigated based on Analysis of variance (ANOVA).   • Blasius–Rayleigh–Stokes flow of nanofluid past an isothermal
           magnetized surface

      The present article investigated the unsteady flow of a nanofluid past an isothermal magnetized plate emanating from a moving slot. This unique form of unsteady boundary layer flow is analogous to stretching/shrinking sheet problems subject to the direction of motion of the slot. Governing partial differential equation can be reduced into a similar form using the Blasius–Rayleigh–Stokes variable. The consequences of the movable slot and magnetic field on flow and heat transfer of nanofluid are examined by solving the problem numerically. The behavior of the magnetic field in the presence of nanoparticles is also examined. Effects of the magnetic field upon the existence of dual solutions for the specific range of moving slot parameter are also studied in detail.

  • Analysis of multiple failure behaviors of steering knuckle ball hinge of
           multi-axle heavy vehicle

      The ball hinge is a key component of the vehicle chassis that connects the steering knuckle and the control arm. The study analyzed the multiple failure behaviors of the chassis ball hinge. Firstly, according to the macroscopic failure characteristics of the ball hinge, the fault tree analysis method was adopted to identify the possible cause of the failure. Then, the axial load and radial load on the ball joint were obtained by simulating the force of the vehicle under the typical extreme conditions. The stress distribution of the ball pin was obtained by finite element analysis of the ball joint. The calculation results are consistent with the fatigue crack position of the ball hinge. Finally, the macro morphology and microstructure of the ball joint seat, ball bowl, dust cover and other parts matched with the ball hinge were analyzed to further verify the failure mode of the ball hinge. The results showed that the dust cover of the ball hinge was firstly aged and cracked, and the external dust and particles enter into the friction contact area of the ball hinge, which caused the ball pin and ball bowl to be stuck. During the operating of the vehicle, the ball pin undergoes unidirectional bending fatigue fracture in the stress concentration area at the root of the conical surface.

  • Experimental and thermal investigation with optimization on friction stir
           welding of nylon 6A using Taguchi and microstructural analysis

      Friction stir welding is an environmentally friendly process of joining due to the non-usage of flux, or any shield gas. Therefore, this article proposes an experimental and thermal investigation with optimization technique for studying the process of FSW on nylon 6A or polycaprolactam polymer composite plates. Specifically, the influence of input operating process parameters such as tool rotational speed (TRS), feed rate, and pitch values on the output response parameters like ultimate tensile strength (UTS), and hardness of welded joints is examined. In addition, L27 orthogonal array of Taguchi approach is employed for the optimization of design experiments of FSW parameters. The experimental setup is carried out with various process parameter combinations like 500, 1000, and 1500 rpm as TRS, 30, 40, and 50 mm as feed rate by varying the pitch values as 1, 2, and 3 mm. Further, the analysis of variance (ANOVA) also employed for finding the significant parameters of input process using the regression analysis equations. Finally, microstructural analysis is used to assess the mixing or dispersing uniformity of composites effectively. The experimental and optimum FSW parameters for maximum UTS are obtained at a feed rate of 30 mm/min, tool pitch of 3 mm, and the TRS of 500 rpm.

  • Thermomechanical performance analysis and experiment of electrothermal
           shape memory alloy helical spring actuator

      In this paper, an electrothermal shape memory alloy helical spring actuator constructed from shape memory alloy with copper-cored enameled wire is presented and fabricated. Based on the shear constitutive model of a shape memory alloy, the Thermo equilibrium equation and the geometrical equation of helical spring establish the thermomechanical theoretical model of helical spring actuator with electrothermal shape memory alloys under different scenarios. The thermomechanical behaviors of the actuator were verified by numerical simulation with experimental tests, and the actuator thermomechanical properties were derived from the analysis with current, temperature, response time, restoring force, and axial displacement as parameters. The experimental results show that the actuator produces a maximum recovery force of 70.2 N and a maximum output displacement of 7.7 mm at 100°C. The actuator response time is 26 s at a current of 3A. It is also demonstrated that the theoretical model can effectively characterize the complex thermo-mechanical properties of the actuator due to the strong nonlinearity of the shape memory alloy. The experimental temperature-force response and temperature-displacement response, as well as the force-displacement response at different temperatures, provide references for the design and fabrication of electrothermal shape-memory alloy coil spring actuators.

  • An approach for mobility and force/motion transmissibility analysis of
           parallel mechanisms based on screw theory and CAD technology

      By integrating screw theory with computer-aided design (CAD) technology, this paper presents an effective and automated methodology for mobility and force/motion transmissibility analysis of parallel mechanisms (PMs). In this approach, A kinematic diagram of a PM termed as the conceptual model, which consists of a solid assembly and several skeleton elements in the form of datum entities and non-geometric entities such as parameters, equations and semantic information, is built by using the 3D modeling capabilities of SolidWorks. For each limb of the PM, a rule-based reasoning (RBR) system is developed based upon the dual and reciprocal properties of screw systems, allowing its own twist/wrench subspaces to be determined automatically by using the joint axis features extracted from the conceptual model. These considerations lead to an automated procedure that can be used to generate the general Jacobian of PMs, allowing the mobility and force/motion transmissibility analysis to be carried out automatically, a work that had to be done manually in the past. Based on the proposed approach, a software package is developed and examples are given to verify its effectiveness.

  • Effect of clearance on volumetric efficiency in 2D piston pumps

      In order to solve the limitations of the friction pairs in axial piston pumps on rotational speed and mechanical efficiency, a 2D piston pump whose 2D piston has two-degree-of-freedom motions of rotation and reciprocating motion was proposed by the author team. The volumetric efficiency of 2D pumps predicted by the original volumetric efficiency model is higher than the experimental results. A new mathematical model of the volumetric efficiency is researched by considering effect of clearance between the cone roller and the guiding rail. In previous studies, the volumetric losses of the 2D pump were considered to be composed of leakage and compressibility loss. However, it is found that the effect of the clearance on the volumetric efficiency in 2D pumps is greater than that of leakage and compressibility loss. The experimental results show that the difference between the prediction of the new model and the volumetric efficiency of the tested pump with 0.19 mm clearance is reduced from 8% to 1.5% comparing with the original model. The volumetric efficiency of the tested pump without the clearance is 96.5% at 5000 rpm rotational speed and 8 MPa load pressure.
