  • Introduction: Archiving Qualitative Data in Practice: Ethical Feedback

Abstract: Bulletin of Sociological Methodology/Bulletin de Méthodologie Sociologique, Volume 150, Issue 1, Page 7-27, April 2021.
Over the past twenty years the normative framework that underpins social science research has undergone major shifts. Among the most salient changes is the growing incentive to archive, share and reuse research data. Today, many governments, funding agencies, research infrastructures and editors are pushing what is commonly known as Open Research Data (ORD). By reflecting on concrete experiences of data sharing, the different contributions to this issue point to the ethical challenges posed by this new trend. Through a fine objectivation of the archiving work, they call to take distance from the bureaucratic framework imposed by the new ethics and ORD policies and to think of data sharing as a situated, contextual and dynamic process. The cost of the exercise as well as the sensitivity of certain data and subjects suggest opting for flexible approaches that leave a certain autonomy and freedom of appraisal to researchers.

Abstract: Bulletin of Sociological Methodology/Bulletin de Méthodologie Sociologique, Volume 150, Issue 1, Page 28-50, April 2021.

  • The Ethical and Practical Challenges of Archiving Refugee Accounts:
Reflections from Two Research Projects in the UK

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Emma Stewart, Marnie Shaffer
      Pages: 51 - 69
Abstract: Bulletin of Sociological Methodology/Bulletin de Méthodologie Sociologique, Volume 150, Issue 1, Page 51-69, April 2021.
Since the 2015 ‘refugee crisis’, the lens of researchers has been increasingly focused upon asylum seekers and refugees around the world. Nevertheless, working in the field of refugee studies poses several methodological and data challenges. For example, there is a relative paucity of detailed statistical data on refugee stocks, which has led to researchers favouring the collection of personal, qualitative stories from refugee populations. Although this produces a substantial volume of rich narratives, these can be geographically and temporally specific. The collection of qualitative data is also expensive, time consuming, and labour intensive. Therefore, alongside the increasing institutional and mandatory demands to deposit qualitative material in open access repositories, there is growing recognition of the value of archiving refugee accounts. There are also significant challenges in archiving refugee interview transcripts to enhance broader knowledge. In this paper, we discuss the process of archiving refugee accounts to highlight the practical and ethical challenges of depositing sensitive material. Specifically, we draw upon the archival process that was required upon completion of two Research Council funded projects in the UK. This involved the preparation and depositing of interview transcripts from over 100 refugees. Key challenges that arose included the need to uphold interviewees’ confidentiality, the process of anonymisation, and determining the level of access to grant future users. Subsequent issues have involved responding to data requests, permitting selective release of data, and stipulating conditions for release. We then reflect more widely upon the tensions we encountered between procedural and micro-ethics, namely the difference between decisions based upon rules rather than judgement. In doing so, we consider key processes and highlight best practice to be adopted in the future archival of refugee stories.

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) now serves as a framework for research, among other activities, when it involves collecting and using data which directly or indirectly allow the people in question to be identified. This therefore affects our research practice and, we believe, requires collective discussion. We suggest opening up the debate in this article by looking at what GDPR compliance means for our work in concrete terms, based on our own experience beginning a study on family transmission of banal nationalism (the ETPAF project). We also give an account of how, in our case, this new regulatory situation has afforded us the opportunity to add a (small) popular education dimension (or participatory science) to our work that was not part of the initial project and that we consider genuinely stimulating.

  • Measuring the violence experienced by sexual minorities: Sampling, data
           collection strategies, and population heterogeneity

      Authors: Tania Lejbowicz, Mathieu Trachman
Abstract: Bulletin of Sociological Methodology/Bulletin de Méthodologie Sociologique, Ahead of Print.
Based on data from the VIRAGE (Violence and Gender Relations: INED, 2015–2016) survey, this article explores reports of violence in minority populations through the case of family violence reported by members of sexual minorities. VIRAGE provides two samples of homo-/bisexual respondents who answered the same questionnaire: a volunteer sample recruited through a communications campaign, who responded via Internet; and respondents to a general population telephone survey who identified as lesbian, gay or bisexual. Sexual identification is a sensitive issue, and surveys of private households do not necessarily capture either all victims of violence or all of those who identify as homosexual or bisexual. The general population sample thus cannot be considered representative of these groups. Lesbian and bisexual women in both samples reported more family violence than gay and bisexual men. Homo-/bisexual respondents in VIRAGE’s convenience sample reported more experiences of violence than those in its general population sample. This difference may be explained by various factors: effects of the data collection mode, and of data collection strategies more generally, as well as the heterogeneity of populations in terms of either exposure to violence or the propensity to report it. We use logistic regression methods to understand these differences, controlling for the differences between the characteristics of the respondents in the two samples. In addition to sociodemographic characteristics, we hypothesized that sexual trajectories and practices of sociability among homosexuals and bisexuals could affect the reporting and perception of violence. After these analyses, differences remain, but to a variable extent depending on sex, sexual identification, and forms of violence. The resulting models explain the differences in reporting between samples for men less well than for women. This result can be interpreted as the consequence of a difference between women’s and men’s exposure to violence: independently of the effects of data collection mode and sampling differences, the high probability that female sexual minorities will experience family violence leads to relatively high reporting in the two samples.

Who Has the Right to Study Gender and How ' Reflections on the Situated Point of View and the Categorisation of Sex Based on a Mixed Method Study of Trans People. Trans people are often reticent when it comes to research. Looking back over a mixed method study, this article analyses the causes of this phenomenon. There are two main reasons for trans people’s distrust. The first relates to expert opinion and more specifically the point of view of professional experts, insofar as trans people have often already been objectivized by non-trans medical and legal experts. The second concerns the categorisation of sex. Some people do not recognise themselves in the man/woman binary applied by professional experts. However, the trans population is heterogeneous: criticism and refusal to participate were more common with certain social profiles than others, varying according to sex assigned at birth, age, generation, and level of education. By paying attention to this plurality, this article provides avenues for allowing researchers to navigate the trans field and also contributes to reflections on the situated point of view and the categorisation of sex in the social sciences.

      Authors: Christine Musselin
Abstract: Bulletin of Sociological Methodology/Bulletin de Méthodologie Sociologique, Ahead of Print.
