  • Antioxidant Evaluation of Co(II) and Zn(II) Complexes with Schiff base
           derived from 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde and p-methoxyaniline

      Abstract: The Metal Complexes of Co(II) and Zn(II) with Schiff base derived from 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde and p-methoxyaniline were synthesized and characterized using elemental analysis, conductivity measurement, magnetic susceptibility, infrared spectral analysis, and solubility test. The Schiff base and its corresponding metal complexes were evaluated for antioxidant activity. The molar conductance values range (6.62-7.80Ω-1cm2mol-1) indicated the non-electrolytic nature of the complexes. The magnetic susceptibility values revealed that Co(II) complex is paramagnetic while Zn(II) complex is diamagnetic. The infrared spectra analysis suggested that the Schiff base behaves as a bidentate ligand. The elemental analysis results revealed slight differences between observed and calculated percentages of C, H, and N in the Schiff base and metal complexes, the metal-ligand ratio was found to be 1:2 in all the complexes. The antioxidant activity of Schiff base and its complexes was measured on the basis of the radical scavenging effect of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH)-free radical activity. The results revealed that the Schiff base and its metal complexes exhibited excellent antioxidant properties.

  • Antifungal Activity of Aloe Barbadensis and Nigella Sativa: A Review

      Abstract: Aloe vera (Aloe barbadense) is a significant medicinal plant that has been in use throughout the world since ancient times. It is an herb, widely used in Ayurvedic, Unani, Homeopathic and Allopathic medicines for its essential medicinal properties. Aloe vera contains a wide range of vitamins, enzymes, amino acids, proteins, lipids, polysaccharides, lignin, saponin, minerals, sugars, and salicylic acids etc. It is a potent antimicrobial, antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral, etc. Aloe vera has essential antifungal properties against various fungal pathogens such as Candida albicans, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Alternaria alternata, Aspergillus fumigatus, Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus glaucus, Penicillium notatum, Penicillium digitatum, Rhizoctonia solani, Fusarium oxysporum, Trichophyton violaceum, Colletotrichum coccodes, and Drechslera hawaiensis, etc. Black cumin (Nigella sativa) is another significant medicinal plant. It belongs to Ranunculaceae family and acts as a potent antifungal. Black cumin seeds are rich in alkaloids, carbohydrates, proteins, ash, saponins, vitamins, minerals, linoleic acid, palmitic acid, trans- anetole, etc. The main constituents of the essential oils are trans-anethole, γ-terpinene, thymoquinone, thymohydroquinone, di-thymoquinone, thymol, 4-terpineol, carvacrol, tanethol, α-pinene, and sesquiterpene longifolene, etc. Black cumin is effective against several fungal pathogens such as Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Epidermophyton floccosum, Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus, Chaetomium globosum, Microsporum canis, Candida albicans, and Candida tropicalis, etc.

  • Effect of Seed Rates on the Yield and Yield Components of Five Soft Wheat
           Varieties (Triticum aestivum L.) Under the Sandy Soil Conditions of the
           Kufra Region, Libya

      Abstract: The Agricultural Research Center of the Kufra Agricultural Project was able to introduce many new varieties of wheat that are appropriate to the conditions of the region, but the productivity of these varieties may be affected by several factors, the most important of which is the appropriate seed rate. A field experiment was carried out at the research station of the Kufra agricultural project located in the southeast of Libya between latitude -12 - 24 ° north and longitude- 17 - 23 ° south during the winter season 2017/2018 in order to study the effect of seed rates on the productivity, production components and growth characteristics of five varieties of wheat under the environmental conditions of the Kufra region, the split-plot design was followed in the implementation of the experiment with three replications. The varieties: [Buc,s - Tui,s - TR - Seri - V.113] were distributed on the main plots while seeding rates  (100 - 125 - 150 - 175 - 200) kg / ha in the sup plots. The following characteristics were studied: plant height (cm) - spike length (cm) - number of spikes / meter 2 - number of days to mature - number of grains / spike - weight 1000 grains / gm - grain yield (tons / h), the data were analyzed statistically and the results were concluded that there are significant differences between seed rates and the varieties used and for all the studied traits, as well as the significant overlap between seed rates and varieties For both number of spikes / meter2 and weight of 1000 germs / gm. The study concluded that the seed rate and the variety used are important in increasing the grain yield of wheat under the conditions of the study area, as the increase in seed rates led to an increase in the grain yield ton / h by a rate of 11.70% , It was also found that the seri variety exceeded its grain yield ton / ha over the rest of the studied varieties.
