  • Ethnomathematics: Bening and Woven of Dayak Kenyah Community

    • Authors: Jero Budi Darmayasa, Irnovita Netiana, Novina Ibut
Abstract: Ethnomathematics is an interesting study in the 21st century. Ethnomathematics has a central role as a study to link culture and mathematics as stated by D'Ambrosio. For this reason, qualitative research was carried out to explore ethnomathematics in the culture of the Dayak Kenyah people in North Kalimantan, especially Bening and Woven. Based on the results of observations, interviews, and documentation analysis, it was found that there is a concept of tube volume, tube surface area, and tube nets in Bening. In addition, representations of tubes and prisms were also found in the form of Dayak Kenyah Woven. These findings can be used to enrich the process of learning mathematics at the primary or secondary education level, including at Vocational High Schools.

  • The effectiveness of developing culture-based mathematics learning media
           through visual basic application

    • Authors: Wahyu Hidayat, Linda Linda
      Pages: 1 - 16
Abstract: Learning media in the process of teaching and learning mathematics have been found in Indonesia. However, learning media with cultural approach nuances are still difficult to find. This shows that the need for learning media to integrate the culture in learning mathematics. Technological developments have changed all fields, including culture. Culture-based mathematics learning through Visual Basic Application (VBA) media has not been studied much, so it is hoped that it can overcome problems in learning mathematics to improve students' mathematical reasoning abilities and ultimately preserve culture. This study aims to develop culture-based mathematics learning media through VBA, which has a good level of validation, practicality, and effectiveness. The research method used is development research using the Plomp model, which includes the initial investigation, design, and assessment phase. The subjects of this study were 34 students of class IX-A from one of the junior high schools in Indonesia. The instrument used was a test containing a description test of 4 questions based on indicators of reasoning ability and a non-test instrument containing student questionnaires and interview instruments. The media developed in this study were analyzed through validity and practicality in order to obtain valid and practical media. The results showed that culture-based mathematics learning media had very valid quality criteria (84.5%), we're very practical (82.14%), and potentially influenced the development of students' mathematical reasoning abilities (80.65%). In addition, teachers and students showed a positive response to the implementation of learning. This indicates that culture-based mathematics learning media through VBA is a feasible alternative to be used and developed in mathematics learning. This has the impact that through learning with cultural nuances, student ethics will be better, mutual respect, respect, and even culture can be preserved. Thus, learning culture-based mathematics through VBA is very effectively used in learning curvature material.

  • Hindrances to undergraduate student’s meaningful learning of bivariate
           normal distribution at Kenya university

    • Authors: Bosire Nyambane Onyancha, Ugorji I. Ogbonnaya
      Pages: 17 - 32
Abstract: The problem of the study was to investigate hindrances to undergraduate students’ meaningful learning of bivariate normal distribution (BND) in a Kenyan university. The study was informed by students’ poor performances in BND. This study adopted a case study design and a qualitative research methodology. Data was collected using a questionnaire from second- and third-year undergraduate statistics students (n=175). The data was thematically tabulated and analyzed using descriptive statistics of frequencies and percentages. The study revealed various hindrances to undergraduate students’ learning of BND, which included;- inadequate background knowledge on BND, negative attitude towards BND, lack of interest on BND, inadequate learning resources on BND, inefficiency in learning long and complex statistical equations, inability to comprehend BND function, inability to derive the conditional mean and variance equations of a joint distribution, lack of an in-depth teaching of BND, few worked examples and assignments on BND etc. It is recommended that an in-depth teaching and learning of BND coupled with adequate worked examples and assignments should be embraced by utilizing university’s freely provided internet resources to bridge students’ statistical content knowledge and pedagogical knowledge gaps.

  • Ethnomathematics of Darussajidin Mosque Indramayu in designing mathematics
activities and philosophy of Islamic values

    • Authors: Mellawaty Mellawaty, Eva Nurhazijah, Diki Mulyana
      Pages: 33 - 50
Abstract: A mosque is a place of worship for Muslims worldwide. The shape of the mosque in each region is different. Along with the times, the mosque has also become one of the objects in cultural acculturation from one area to another, thus creating increasingly diverse shapes and designs in mosques. One of them is the Darussajidin Mosque in Bondan Barat Indramayu. This research aims to determine the ethnomathematics of the Darussajidin Indramayu mosque in designing mathematical activities and the ethnomathematics of the Darussajidin Indramayu mosque on the philosophical meaning of Islamic values. This research was conducted at the Darussajidin mosque, Indramayu, in Bondan Village, Sukagumiwang District, Indramayu Regency. The subjects in this study were DKM mosques, caretakers, community leaders, and cultural observers, while the object in this study was the Darussajidin Indramayu mosque. This research is qualitative research with an ethnographic approach. Observation, interviews, and documentation collected data. The instruments used are observation guidelines, interview guidelines, and documentation tools. The results showed that there was ethnomathematics of the Darussajidin Indramayu mosque in the mathematical activity of designing, and there was ethnomathematics of the Darussajidin Indramayu mosque in the philosophical meaning of Islamic values among them; on the roof, dome, walls, pillars, floors, and ornaments of the Darussajidin Indramayu mosque.

  • THE EFFECT OF DIGITAL LEARNING ON STUDENT MATHEMATICS ACHIEVEMENT AT
           JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL

    • Authors: Rahmah Johar, Farah Putri Rahmadhani, Mukhlis Hidayat
      First page: 46
Abstract: This study aimed to determine the effect of digital learning on student mathematics achievement. This study used a quantitative approach with a correlation research type. The population in this study was all students of grade IX of SMP Negeri 4 Banda Aceh, with the research sample being a saturated sample. The instruments used were a digital learning platforms usage questionnaire and documentation of student mathematics examination results for the academic year of 2021/2022. The techniques for data analysis used in this study were the chi-square test and contingency coefficient, where the results obtained revealed that there is an effect of digital learning on student mathematics learning outcomes at SMP Negeri 4 Banda Aceh; and usage level of digital learning platforms and mathematics learning outcomes have a very high correlation

  • Structural Model Between Mathematical Reasoning Ability and Mathematics
Problem-solving Ability of Junior High School Students

    • Authors: Abdurrobbil Falaq Dwi Anggoro, Heris Hendriana, Anik Yuliani
      Pages: 74 - 78
Abstract: Based on the preliminary survey, it is known that the scores of junior high school students' math problem-solving abilities are low. One of the causes of the low ability of solving mathematical problems is the low ability of students' mathematical reasoning. The purpose of this study was to examine the suitability of the structural equation model for the relationship between mathematical reasoning abilities and mathematical problem-solving abilities. This type of research is ex post facto. The population of this study were students of SMP N 1 Bengkulu City, as many as 296 students. A simple sample randomly selected as many as 100 people. The research instrument was a test of mathematical problem-solving ability and a test of mathematical reasoning ability. The data were analyzed through a structural equation model with the help of the Lisrel 8.8 and SPSS programs. The result of this research is that the path efficiency is very significant, meaning that the ability of mathematical reasoning is directly related to the ability of solving mathematical problems. This means that an increase in mathematical reasoning ability leads to an increase in mathematical problem-solving ability. The conclusion of this study is that mathematical reasoning ability is directly related to mathematical problem-solving ability, with the contribution of mathematical reasoning ability to increasing mathematical problem-solving ability of 15.13%.
