  • New Type Steel Bridge Applied on the Forest Road (the Case of Vize Forest
           Enterprise Directorate)

      Abstract: During the 60-year planned development period of Turkey, forests were also put into operation effectively. Forest road network plans have been created in order to make effective use of these areas within the scope of functional forestry. The forest roads are the main transportation facilities used in all forestry activities such as wood production, afforestation, silvicultural applications, fire fighting, forest protection, and recreational applications. Environmental awareness and functional forestry studies should be considered while planning forest road networks. In order for forest roads to provide long-term service, it is important that planning, construction and maintenance works are done well. In order to protect forest roads and keep them open to transportation, the protection and drainage structures such as protection walls, pipes, culverts, bridges should be established. In this study, the construction of the steel bridge, which was built for the first time on the forest road in Turkey, was examined. The construction techniques of steel bridges and their suitability for forest roads were investigated.

  • Ecoregion-Based Diameter Increment Model for Scots Pine Stands in
           Kastamonu and Sinop Regions

      Abstract: Individual tree and stand development may vary depending on ecological factors. In this study, ecoregion-based individual tree diameter increment model were developed for Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) stands of Kastamonu and Sinop regions. For this purpose, ecoregion classification, which is formed by evaluating various ecological factors, was used in the models and the differences between ecoregions were investigated. The Black Sea Climatic Region, where the study area is located, contains 5 sub-ecological regions (ecoregion), and area studies were carried out in Ecoregion 1, Ecoregion 2 and Ecoregion 3, where Scots pine are densely distributed. The data of 2318 sample trees obtained from 292 sample plots were used as study material. The estimations made with the mixed-effects modeling approach were compared using the non-linear sum of extra squares test. Individual tree models for each ecoregion have been developed to estimate the diameter increments of the last 5 years, and its R2 value is 0,691. As a result of statistical and graphical examinations, it was revealed that there were differences between ecoregions and found appropriate to use ecoregion-based models for Scots pine stands in Kastamonu and Sinop regions.

  • Determination of Forest Fire Risk Using GIS: A Case Study in Nigde, Turkey

      Abstract: The main purpose of this study is to develop a statistical model to prepare forest fire risk map using GIS. In this study eight important factors were used to determining the forest fire risk such as land use/land cover type, slope, aspect, altitude, settlement, road, temperature and precipitation. The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) was used to evaluate the factors. Precipitation and temperature were the most important factors to determining the forest fire risk. The study area has approximately 10.72% low fire risk, 28.21% moderate fire risk, 43.50% high fire risk, 14.65% very high fire risk, and 2.92% extreme forest fire risk. 61.07% of the study area has a high, very high and extreme forest fire risk. In order to prevent forest fires, land cover/land use should be planned in a way that does not damage forests. Especially vehicle roads, expressways, etc. which are located near the forests, have a high fire risk. Therefore, these areas should be planned in a way that will not damage the forests. The climatic characteristics of the study area should be examined, the urban texture should not be in a way to prevent microclimatic factors such as wind and precipitation.

  • Comparison of the Gas Exchange Parameters of Two Maple Species (Acer
           negundo and Acer pseudoplatanus) Seedlings under Drought Stress

      Abstract: In this study, two-year-old bare-root Acer negundo and Acer pseudoplatanus seedlings were grown indoors (control vs. drought-stressed) and outside the hoop house to examine leaf gas exchange parameters in the late growing period. Besides morphological features, several gas exchange parameters, such as net photosynthetic rate (Anet), transpiration rate (E), stomatal conductance (gs), intercellular CO2 to ambient CO2 (Ci/Ca), water use efficiency (WUE=Anet/E), intrinsic water use efficiency (iWUE=Anet/gs) were measured. As a result, A. pseudoplatanus seedlings had a higher stem height growth. A. negundo had a higher Anet, and a lower iWUE and Ci/Ca than A. pseudoplatanus. Seedlings grown under control treatment had a higher Anet, gs, E, and a lower iWUE, WUE, and Ci/Ca values than other treatments. In conclusion, there was no significant difference between the two Acer species in terms of gas exchange parameters. However, it can be said that A. negundo and A. pseudoplatanus are drought resistant.

  • Digital Documentation of Monumental Trees Using Photogrammetry Technique:
           The Case of Mızık Pine Natural Monument

      Abstract: It is important to identify, register, protect monumental trees that are living representatives of natural and cultural heritage, to transfer them to next generation with a digital documentation based on reality and a sustainable understanding. The photogrammetry technique offers a reliable and accurate approach to the reality-based documentation of monumental trees. In this study, it is aimed to create a realistic and highly accurate three-dimensional (3D) model based on photogrammetry technique as an effective and low-cost tool for the preservation and visualization of monumental trees. The workflow was applied to the Mızık Pine Natural Monument located in Domur Village, Domaniç district, Kütahya province. The results of the study showed that the photogrammetry technique provides great advantages in terms of accuracy, speed, cost, efficiency and product diversity in 3D digital documentation and analysis of monumental trees. The approach described in the study provides new opportunities to make works of cultural heritage more accessible and inclusive.

  • Monumental Traits of European Yew Trees near to Gökgöl Cave in

      Abstract: In this study, the monumental traits of 4 old Taxus baccata L. individuals found in a mixed stand consisting of Eastern beech (Fagus orientalis Lipsky), Anatolian chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill.) and Common hornbeam (Carpinus betulus L.) species near Gökgöl Cave in Zonguldak were investigated. The Present Monumental Point of these yew trees (PMP), whose estimated ages range from 915 to 1180, are determined as between 71 and 94. Since these points are greater than 40, which is the Minimum Monumental Point (MMP) given for European yew, all the trees studied are dimensional monumental trees. As a result, this part of nature, including the Gökgöl cave, with the monumental yew trees in question, should be designated and registered as a "natural monument".

  • Flora of Yenice Wildlife Development Area (Karabuk/Turkey)

      Abstract: The study was carried out in Karabük Yenice Wildlife Development Area between 2015-2017 in order to determine the flora of the region. 297 genera and 445 taxa belonging to 83 families growing naturally in the area were identified and 2225 specimens belonging to them were collected. Of these taxa, 6 genera belonging to 5 families and 7 taxa belonging to these genera are from Pteridophyta, 78 families and 438 taxa are from the Spermatophyta division. 4 genera and 6 taxa belong to the Gymnospermae class, while 432 species and infraspesific taxa belonging to 75 families belong to the Angiospermae class. The family with the most taxa in the study area was identified as Asteraceae. This family is followed by Fabaceae, Rosaceae, Poaceae families, respectively. The total number of endemic taxa in the area is 17. According to the Red Book of Plants of Turkey, 2 taxa are classified as NT, 3 taxa EN, 9 taxa LC, 1 taxon VU among endemic taxa. 2 taxa were not evaluated in any category. 2 taxa are under protection by BERN and 17 taxa are under protection by CITES.

  • First Record of the Silver Fir Bark Beetle Pityokteines curvidens (Germ.)
           on Blue Spruce (Picea pungens Engelm.) in Turkey Enterprise Directorate)

      Abstract: Live plant and seed imports are becoming one of the important ecological problems in terms of transportation of non-native invasive plant pest species to different countries and the reach of native invasive pest species to different food sources. It has been observed drying on one of the exotic species Picea pungens (Engelm) that is used as ornamental plants in city parks and gardens in Düzce between 2020 - 2021. Damaged trees were observed and the bark parts were removed with a knife, placed in locked bags and brought to the laboratory. Photos of damaged trees were taken. Identification of insects was carried out. This is the first report of Pityokteines curvidens (Germ.) on Picea pungens from Turkey. Pityokteines curvidens has a potential to be an important pest on Picea pungens which used as an ornamental plant in parks and gardens. Therefore, periodic monitoring of the population of Pityokteines curvidens should be continued and preventive measures should be taken.

  • Effect of Alkaline Concentration on Mechanical Properties of Wood Flour
           Filled PVC Composites

      Abstract: This study was carried out to determine the effect of modified wood flour on thermoplastic composites. For this purpose, wood flour treated with alkali (sodium hydroxide (NaOH)) at different concentrations (0-3-6-12%) were added to polyvinyl chloride (PVC) polymer to produce wood-PVC composites. In order to determine the effect of alkali treatment on the mechanical properties of wood-PVC composites, tensile strength, tensile modulus, flexural strength, flexural modulus and hardness values were determined. It was determined that the tensile strength, flexural strength and modulus of elasticity values of the composite samples containing alkali-treated wood flour were higher than those containing untreated wood flour. The highest tensile and flexural strength values were determined in the composite sample containing 6% NaOH treated wood flour. In addition, it was observed that the hardness values of the composite samples were not affected much by the alkali treatment. In addition, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) results showed that alkali treatment caused an increase in the thermal stability of composite materials.

  • Assessment of Urban Identity and Its Components: A Case Study of Erbil

      Abstract: The most prominent principles related to the component and moral values are historical and architectural characteristics. These features and values are identities gained from the journey of history. The concept of Urban identity refers to the impact of elements on people. Urban identity is classified into two main groups: environmental identity and social identities. The methodology of this research is summarized into two stages. In the first stage, a literature survey was conducted about the identity of cities, elements, and establishment of the identity components of cities. The second stage is based on questioning. Some visual analyses (photographs, maps, observations) were conducted for this goal. This study is trying to answer this question: "What are the identity components of the cities'". In this framework, the city should be a rich historical and spatial context to examine urban identity in the development process. For this purpose, Erbil Ancient City and the historic city of Erbil were chosen as the study topic. The study is based on the hypothesis that "Erbil citadel / Tajeel, Mustawfi Araban and Khanaqa district fulfils the components of the urban identity of the Erbil". Cities can have common characteristics such as history, culture, architecture, and identity. However, there are differences in natural resources, humanity settlement, cultural backgrounds, historical cores, and physical aspects like shapes. These variations define different identities. In other words, the diverse characteristics of a city create a unique identity of that city. Therefore, it assumed that this study would help understand the city's identity. It thought that examining the citadel / big Bazar area regarding identity components would facilitate the application of planning and decision making. Also, there is a common belief that identity will increase awareness level about the city's brand value.

  • An Alternative Way of Measuring Tensile Characteristics of Handsheets

      Abstract: In this work, the laboratory-made handsheets having different grammages were obtained at certain production conditions. The tensile characteristics of the laboratory-made handsheets were analysed by using two measuring techniques. The main method for determining tensile behaviour was performed on the universal testing machine, which is a generally accepted conventional testing machine. A rheometer device was used as a second and alternative method for measuring the tensile properties of handsheets. The given data were investigated and compared with the data of conventional tensile tester. Linear least square regression was applied to analyse the association of the data from the Instron 5564 Universal Testing Machine and Hybrid Rheometer Discovery HR-2 Machine with examined tensile characteristics depending on the various grammage range. The experiments on the handsheets having different grammage groups showed that the methods give results in reasonable agreement. These results showed that there are acceptable differences in the tensile index and elastic modulus values of the samples as a function of their basis grammages.

  • Properties of Gypsum Boards Made with Cedrus Tree (Cedrus libani)
           Components. Part 1. Physical and Mechanical Properties

      Abstract: In this study, it was found that the addition of wood had a reducing effect on water absorption (WA) and thickness swelling (TS) properties in gypsum-based boards. The lowest WA value of 41.56% was found sample prepared with cedrus’s bark/needle mixture (KaI3; 3:2 by weight). It has also been realized that experimental boards made only bark-gypsum (SKa6), cone-gypsum (SKo6) and needle-gypsum (SI6) proportions show Thickness Swelling (TS) values of 33.70%, 21.70% and 18.85%, respectively. However, the surface hardness (Shore D) has usually correlated with wood content but natural weathering negatively effects hardness that lowering from -6.9% (SKa1) to -30.3% (SKa2) in all typse experimental boards. It was found that panels produced with cedrus wood/cone (SKo); cedrus wood/needle (SI) and cedrus cone/needle (KoI) proportions have no higher values than standard Internal Bond (IB) value of 0.28 N/mm2. But the highest IB value of 0.48 N/mm2 was observed for a sample of SKa5 that produced with a ratio of 1:4 by cedrus wood/bark proportions (w/w). Moreover, the highest bending strength (MOR) values of 1.32 N/mm2 were calculated with SKa2 sample that produced with ratio of 4:1 by cedrus wood/bark proportions (w/w). These mechanical properties are probably related to experimental board manufacturing process, which consists of multi stage processing (slushing, soaking, formation, pressing and drying) may effect hindering reinforcement elements to develop the network matrix strength properly.

  • Smart Approachesto Urban Parking Solutions: Safranbolu City Example

      Abstract: In today’s world, with the acceleration of urbanization, the population living in cities is increasing. With this rapid increase, unplanned urbanization has progressed and urban problems have emerged. With the advancing and developing new technologies, smart solutions have been sought for these problems. Traffic and heavy vehicle shortages, which are an important component of urban problems, have also revealed fuel and environmental pollution problems. Smart solutions have started to be suggested for cities that have various problems such as limited resources and the management of densely populated cities. Sustainable smart cities and solutions have been proposed by using advanced technology such as simultaneous processing of data and data integration. Within the scope of this study, smart cities and parking solutions have been researched and examined on a national and international scale. In the city of Safranbolu, which has historical and touristic value, the traffic and parking problem in Sadri Artunç Street, which has an important place in terms of commercial, education and tourism, has been analyzed. In line with the data obtained, a smart parking system has been proposed as a solution to the parking problem and traffic problem on the street.

  • Cointegration and Causality Relations between BIST Forest Paper Print
           Index and Some Variables

      Abstract: The aim of this study is BIST Forestry Paper Printing (XKAGT) index and Futures Timber Transactions (LBc1), European Forest-Paper indices Helsinki Forestry & Paper (HX551010PI), Stockholm Forestry & Paper (SX551010PI) and exchange rates in Dollar, Euro and Sterling. The aim is to reveal the cointegration and causality relationships of Engle Granger cointegration test and VAR Granger causality test by using daily data between 2.1.2015-22.10.2021. According to the results of the study, Engle Granger cointegration relationship was found between (XKAGT) index and (HX551010PI), (SX551010PI), Dollar, Euro and Sterling, but no cointegration relationship was found with (LBc1). According to the VAR Granger causality test for the variables; (SX551010PI) and HX551010PI) index to (XKAGT) index, (XKAGT) index to (LBc1) index, (SX551010PI) index and Sterling variable to (HX551010PI) index, (XKAGT) index and Dollar to Sterling variable, (XKAGT) index to Dollar, A one-way causality relationship was found from the (XKAGT) index and the dollar variable to the Euro variable.
