  • God Is Watching: Priming God Consepts Increases Prosocial Behavior in an
           Anonymous Economic Game

    • Authors: Azim F. SHARİFF; Ara NORENZAYAN
Abstract: We present two studies aimed at resolving experimentally whether religion increases prosocial behavior in the anonymous dictator game. Subjects allocate more money to anonymous strangers when God concepts were implicitly activated than when neutral or no concepts were activated. This effect was at least as large as that obtained when concepts associated with secular moral institutions were primed. A trait measure of self-reported religiosity did not seem to be associated with prosocial behavior. We discuss different possible mechanisms that may underlie this effect, focusing on the hypotheses that the religious prime had an ideomotor effect on generosity or that it activated a felt presence of supernatural watchers. We then discuss implications for theories positing religion as a facilitator of the emergence of early largescale societies of cooperators.

  • An Islamic Jurisprudential Examine on The Gain Dimension of Digital Games

    • Authors: Mustafa ÇAKIR
Abstract: Developments in the field of information and communication technologies in the last century have resulted in digitalization that affects almost every aspect of life. Digitalization which has seriously transformed many areas of daily life has also significantly affected the form of games which have long been accepted as a common leisure activity and entertainment element in societies. Especially in the last half-century, the digital game industry which has achieved an important momentum and is growing day by day has become a popular sector economically as well. In digital games which constitute an economically important competitive field for game developers, various economic values can be gained and lost due to physical, digital, or membership-based sale, purchase, and sale of some virtual elements in the game or relationships during the game. The fact that games that attract people’s attention for various purposes such as improving knowledge, skills, and abilities, spending time, relieving stress, and therapy are seen as commercial activities that aim to make a profit, makes it necessary to discuss this aspect of the games. This study analyzes the understanding of digital games which are discussed today from different perspectives as a commercial area of occupation and a method of earning in terms of their Islamic jurisprudential situation.

  • Interpretation of Qur’ānic Verses Related to Biological
           Creation of Human

    • Authors: Yahya ARSLAN; Hasan YILMAZ
Abstract: Mankind is a species that the Quran gives notable details about his creation. The first stage of the creation of man is called “direct” creation and this is a process that composes of several levels. In addition to these levels, there is another stage called “indirect” i.e biological creation that implies the creation of Adam’s offspring. This process consists of significant levels named “nutfe”, “alaka”, “mudğa”, “ıʿzam”, “kesevne’l-ıʿzâm” and “halkun-âhar”. All these levels refer to the adventure of the human in the womb. Therefore, this article tries to define and describe the significance of man by revealing the direct and indirect creation stages. Then, the miraculous feature of the indirect creation was emphasized, unlike others who regard it as an ordinary phenomenon. In addition, these creation steps are sophisticated in the manner that they are seen as evidence of Allah’s existence and unity. Not only the Quranic verses which are related to these creation stages but also the texts of the classical and modern tafsir of these verses were used in this study. Some of the books, dissertations, and articles regarding these verses were also used. After defining the term “creation” and “man”, the essential information related to direct creation and indirect creation is given. Then the levels of the indirect creation were expressed in detail by referencing the verses that underline the man’s biological creature. In short, the importance of the biological creature was highlighted, and through the adventure of the man in these creation stages, the unity, authority, power, and foresight features of Allah were remarked.

  • The Effect of Teachers’ Communication Skills and Students’ Attitudes
Towards DKAB and IHL Vocational Courses

    • Authors: Ümit KALKAN; Ramazan ATASOY, Mehmet KARADAĞ
Abstract: The communication skills of teachers can cause many positive or bad effects in their future lives in terms of psycho-social and religious aspects by shaping students’ attitudes towards their lessons and school life. This study aims to examine the effects of religion lesson teachers working in the TRNC on their communication skills and students’ attitudes towards these lessons according to different variables. The study group of the research, which was designed according to the relational survey model using the quantitative research method, consists of 399 students selected by criterion-based purposive sampling method among 1117 students studying at Hala Sultan Theology College in the 2020-2021 academic year. According to the results of the research, it has been seen that the communication skills of the vocational course teachers with the students are at a high level, the female students communicate more easily with their teachers than the male students, and the communication skills of the teachers do not differ according to the grade levels. Students’ attitudes towards DKAB and IHL vocational courses are at a moderate level. While there is a significant difference between male and female students in terms of student attitudes, liking and interest dimensions according to the gender variable, there is no significant difference according to the class variable. There is a statistically positive and significant relationship between teachers’ communication skills and students’ attitudes towards DKAB and IHL vocational courses. Teachers’ communication skills significantly predict students’ attitudes towards their lessons.

  • The Attributes of God in Haci Bektās-i Velī’s Thought

    • Authors: Ferit İNCEL; Yaşar TÜRKBEN
Abstract: In this study, the thoughts of Haci Bektās-i Velī (1209-1270), who came to Anatolia from Central Asia and formed his teachings along the lines of both Hallāc-i Mansūr and Ahmed Yesevī and influenced the masses, on the attributes of God are examined. Throughout the study, we consider and evaluate the attributes that will allow us to determine the conception of God of Haci Bektās-i Velī, which has been talked about a lot in philosophical and theological discussions in the context of the God-world relationship. Haci Bektās-i Velī has a theist understanding of God, who is eternal, immanent, and transcendent, the only one, and has absolute power. According to him, knowing the nature of God is a situation that exceeds the limits of human comprehension, but it is possible to know God through his names and attributes. He builds the image of God on the attributes of power, creation, knowledge, and will. According to him, there is a dynamic relationship and unity between the perfect God, who has knowledge and power, and the world he created in perfect harmony and order. Haci Bektās-ı Velī adopts the idea of wahdat al-wujūd, which became the dominant paradigm among the Sufis in the 13th century. However, this understanding of him cannot be seen as pantheism. Since pantheism identifies God with the world, it does not overlap with Haci Bektās’s idea of God and the world. According to Haci Bektāş, God created this universe with his own will. The universe is created and thus contingent. According to the pantheist view, everything happens in God. Since there is no realm separate from Him, there is no creation. Haci Bektās-i Velī, on the other hand, believed that this world had a creator.

  • Qalb and Aqs Objections Against The Illah According to Hanafi Jurists

    • Authors: Ahmet EKİNCİ
Abstract: Qiyas, one of the most important issues among the methods of making judgments in the Islamic jurisprudence, means to move the ferʿ to the asl and to apply the decree of the asl to the ferʿ because of the similarity between them due to a illah that combines the asl and the ferʿ. The proceduralists have examined the nature of the illah, its parts, conditions, and ways of detection, and have put forward different views in this context. One of the issues on which the jurists disagree about the illah is the objections against the illah. Although the objections to the illah are the subject of the science of jadal, they are included in the majority of the works of method. There is no consensus among the jurists about the number of objections to the illah. It is seen that different numbers are put forward about the objections to the illah even among the jurists belonging to the same school. The qalb and aqs, which are the subject of our research are from the objections to illah. While the qalb is accepted as a valid objection to the illah, different opinions have been put forward about whether the aqs, named as qalbu al-taswiya, whose originality is qalb is valid or not. The aqs, which has been considered weak and invalid by some jurists, has been seen as a valid objection by some. In this study, the issues of qalb and aqs, which are among the objections against the illah according to the Hanafi jurists, will be discussed and examined.

  • The Effect of Logic on Rhetoric

    • Authors: Tahsin YURTTAŞ
Abstract: In this article, I examined how the science of logic has affected Arabic rhetoric in the historical process both conceptually and theoretically. It is a known fact that Arabic rhetoric was a part of the practical life of Arab society from the pre-Muhammad(pbuh) time to the Abbasids. With the introduction of Aristotelian logic to the Islamic world in the Abbasid period, Arabic rhetoric started to be influenced by the discipline of logic. Logic has affected rhetoric as well as religious sciences. However, this effect was conceptual and methodological rather than theoretical. This effect has been through topics such as universals, concept, definition theory, division (dividing), classification, and signification in the science of logic. Through the Eastern Rhetoric School (Mesārika), rhetoric books began to be written according to the logical method after the 5th century. In other words, the logical effect is not directed to content and theory in rhetoric works, but to form and classify the methods. This method has been decisive until today and rather than literary taste and criticism, has come to the fore to deal with rhetoric issues with a logical method. The role of rhetoric scholars such as Ebū Yaʿkūb es-Sekkākī (d. 626/1229) and his work Miftāhu’l-ʿulūm played an important role in the formation of rhetoric according to logic. Again, Kudame b. Caʿfer (d. 337/948 [']) and his work named Naḳdu’l-şiʿr and the work of Ebü’l-Hasen Hāzim al-Kartācennī (d. 684/1285) Minhācu’l-buleġā also contributed to the science of logic. We have not been able to identify a study that reveals the effect of logic on rhetoric in general terms. The importance of the article is to determine and explain how much the science of logic affects rhetoric in terms of theory, methodology, and content. In the research, we found that while the effect of logic on rhetoric was shown, previous studies on the subject limited this effect to only a few concepts. We have stated that, unlike these approaches, logic has a deeper and more comprehensive effect on the history of rhetoric.

  • Sources of Certain Knowledge in Shams al-Dīn
           al-Samarqandī’s Epistemology

    • Authors: Mehdi CENGİZ
Abstract: The question of what the nature of knowledge is and how to reach certainty kept the philosophers busy. Hence, many theories have been brought up about the definition and types of knowledge. In particular, thinkers seeking an answer to the question of how to reach certain information have categorized the images formed in the mind, taking into account whether they agree with the actual events or not. The elements of these divisions, in terms of their accuracy and certainty, range from ignorance to knowledge. Shams al-Dīn al-Samarqandī (d. 722/1322), who connects philosophical assumptions to the discipline of kalām (theology) and reflects the philosophical content in his kalām books, discusses the types of knowledge in his different works. This study argues that al-Samarqandī was influenced by Avicenna (d. 428/1037) regarding the sources of knowledge. However, while discussing semiyyat topics, al-Samarqandī differed from the Avicennian tradition, claiming that mutawātirāt is not sufficient to reach certain information, but that certainty can be reached with presumptions. In addition, this article draws attention to the unique aspects of al-Samarqandī’s understanding of knowledge, according to him, the propositions in terms of truth-value will be examined and the sources of exact knowledge will be discussed.

  • The Life Of Waraqah b. Nawfal’s And an Analysis of the News About His
           Relationship with the Prophet

    • Authors: Mücahit YÜKSEL
Abstract: The Age of Jahiliyyah is a process in which many religious beliefs and understandings are manifested. Although the dominant element in the Arabian Peninsula before Islam was paganism, the existence of communities that adopted beliefs such as Christianity, Judaism, Sabiism, and Hanifism is also a reality. One of the famous figures of the period, Waraqah b. Nawfal did not adopt paganism and went on a quest with some of his friends who were thinking like him. In this context, it is stated that he was a Hanif and a Christian, as well as that he became a Muslim later on. The events where Waraqah's path crossed with the Prophet are mentioned in the sources of siyer and Islamic history. There are scenes where he is mentioned with Muhammad(pbuh) both before and after his prophethood. Such expressions were sometimes used by orientalists as a basis for groundless claims about the origin of Islam. Especially the dialogue narrated about the coming of the first revelation gains importance in this context. In this article, a concise presentation of Waraqah’s life is provided in the first part, and then his religious situation is discussed. In the part that forms the basis of the study, inferences are made after the rumors that Waraqah’s name is mentioned together with Prophet Muhammad(pbuh) before and after the prophethood are discussed. Per the nature of the subject, descriptive, analytical, and inductive methods were followed in the article.

  • Adults’ Perception of Social Decorum and Their Views on Social
           Decorum Education

    • Authors: Sümeyra BİLECİK
Abstract: Politeness, elegance, civilization and morality in the attitudes and behaviors that people living in a society should observe in their relations with each other constitute the rules of social decorum. Manners of social decorum are shaped by religion, belief, morals, values and tradition that have been accepted as dominant in societies over time. For this reason, it is possible to see changes in the principles of it and the behaviors required by it over time. In this study, the change in the phenomenon of social decorum over time is examined. The study also aims to determine the perception of today’s social decorum and the views of adult individuals on education of social decorum. For this purpose, the semi-structured interview technique is implemented in the study. In the research, which was limited to individuals residing in Konya, 23 participants over the age of 18 were asked questions to determine their perception of social decorum and their views on education of social decorum. In order to reflect maximum diversity, individuals from different educational backgrounds and age groups were included in the research. The collected data were subjected to descriptive analysis and various findings were obtained. I believe that this study will contribute to the concept of social decorum and its teaching by determining how people perceive it today and their expectations and thoughts about the social decorum education
