  • English Verb Valency Pattern in Padma Resort Legian Guest Reviews on
           TripAdvisor

      Abstract: This research was conducted in order to identify verb valency pattern found in reviews on TripAdvisor uploaded by visitors of Padma Resort Legian. It was executed as a descriptive qualitative research which complied with observation and note-taking method for data collection (Sudaryanto, 2015), continued by data analysis in accordance with Verbs and Their Satellites theory by D.J. Allerton (2006). The sample data was taken from reviews posted for Padma Resort Legian in TripAdvisor. It was compiled and analyzed in Microsoft Excel pivot table. Most of the verb valency pattern found consists of auxiliary verb with subject and predicative as its elaborators functioning as object. In terms of its transitivity, verb valency patterns on reviews were dominated with bi-valent, followed by tri-valent, mono-valent and tetra-valent in number.

  • Figurative Language Used in Hollywood’s Bleeding Album by Post
           Malone

      Abstract: This research aims at finding out the types of figurative language and to analyze the meaning of the figurative language conveyed in Post Malone’s songs in the album entitled Hollywood’s Bleeding. The method used in collecting data is the descriptive qualitative method. The data were analyzed based on the theory types of figurative language from Knickerbocker and Reninger (1963), Knickerbocker and Reninger. Theory proposed by Leech (1981) was applied to find out the meaning. The result shows that there are eight types of figurative language used in Post Malone’s songs.They are simile (4 items or 13.8%), personification (2 items or 6.9%), metaphor (3 items or 10.3%), hyperbole (8 items or 27.6%), synecdoche (2 items or 6.9%), metonymy (2 items or 6.9%), irony (2 items or 6.9%) and paradox (6 items or 20.7%). There were 29 sentences identified using those eight types of figurative languages states above. The dominant types of figurative language is hyperbole because the songwriter is put more exageration to the lyrics to make them sounds beautiful.

  • An Analysis of Verbal and Visual Signs Found in the Posters of Korean Pop
           Idol

      Abstract: This research aims at finding out verbal and non-verbal signs and also explaining the meaning of those verbal and visual signs found in the posters of Korean pop idol. The data were taken from ten printed posters of Korean pop idol from the internet. This study used the theory of semiotic by Saussure (1983) to find out the verbal and non-verbal signs and theory meanings by Barthes (1968) to find out the meaning of verbal and visual signs in the posters of Korean pop idol. Descriptive qualitative method was used to analyze the data in this study. As the result, those ten posters of Korean pop idol show the verbal and visual signs that support the agencies to promote their idols. In the verbal  and visual signs of the posters album and concert of Korean idol show most all of them conveys connotative meaning.  In the non-verbal signs of the advertisements almost all of the posters of Korean idol used the member of the idol group as a model, It means the advertisements want to attract the people interest by using a the good visual of the idol.

  • The Translation Process of Machine Translation for Cultural Terms on
           Balinese Folktales

      Abstract: The goal of this study is to determine the capability of Google Translate in term of translating cultural terms. This study is conducted to analyze the translation performed by one of the well-known machine translation, Google Translate. The data is collected from the translation of seven traditional Balinese folktales chosen in random via online, namely Manik Angkeran, Kebo Iwa, Lubdaka, Tampaksiring, Origin of Bali, Origin of Singaraja, and Pan Balang Tamak. The data of the study is the translation on cultural terms translated by Google Translate. The cultural terms are classified with Cultural Term Classification Theory by Newmark. The analysis is conducted by comparing the translatied text and the original text to identify the translation method utilized by Google Translate in translating cultural term into English. The Translation Method Theory and Classification by Newmark is used to identify the method of translation utilized by Google Translate. The methods then is used in order to determine the tendency of Google Translate in the translation toward cultural terms.

  • Modality in the Novel of The Lord of The Rings and its Translations in
           Indonesian Language

      Abstract: This study aims to identify the meanings and techniques used in translating the modality from SL (English) to TL (Bahasa) in the novel of The Lord of The Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien. The data in this study were taken from the original novel of The Lord of The Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien in English version and its translation in Indonesian language. The theories applied to analyse the data are the types of modality proposed by Kreidler (1998) and the translation procedures proposed by Newmark (1988). The data in this study were analyzed using qualitative descriptive approach to find out the result of the problems. The observation method was chosen to apply in this study by reading the SL and TL novel carefully to get the general idea of the content of the story and then observing closely the data consist of modality. The data in this study were presented descriptively used informal method. It meant the data would be presented by giving some descriptions to convey the meanings and translations of the modality. The results are the modality expressed some meanings and used some translation procedures. Modal must expressed unavoidable obligation and strong advice or orders to oneself, it used modulation procedure. Modal should expressed criticism and giving an opinion about something, it used reduction and couplets procedure. Modal have to expressed idea of obligation and used modulation procedure. Modal ought to expressed desirability and used modulation procedure. Modal can expressed ability and giving permission, it used modulation and shift procedure. Modal could expressed ability and used reduction and expansion procedure. Modal may expressed permission and used couplets procedure. Modal might expressed permission and possibility, it used reduction and literal translation procedure.

  • Reiteration Used by the Participants of Warmadewa University Reading News
           Contest

      Abstract: This paper discusses about reiteration used by the participants of reading news contest conducted in Warmadewa University. Reiteration is part of lexical cohesion. The lexical cohesion has two functions; first to link between word and word, phrase and phrase within a text and second to indicate co-occurrence of words in which their meaning related in the same environment. The reiteration refers to first function of lexical cohesion. The theories applied to support this paper are the theory of cohesion from a book entitled Introducing Discourse Analysis by Nunan (1993) and a book entitled Cohesion in English by Halliday and Hasan (1976). The data of this paper taken from six texts made by the participants of the contest. The text contains with the participants’ perspectives on Indonesian culture in the globalization era. The data was analyzed by using qualitative method. Based on the result of the analysis, it is found that reiteration used in the text by the participants of reading news contest consists of repetition, synonym/nears synonym, superordinate and general word.

  • Illocutionary Acts in President Joe Biden’s Speech

      Abstract: This article aimed to specify  the kinds of illocutionary acts and defined the existence of illocutionary acts and their meaning in a speech to discover the outcomes of the maximum dominant kinds of illocutionary acts in President Joe Biden's speech. The research method used in completing this research becomes the descriptive qualitative method. In studying the data, the theory of Searle (1979) becomes used to determine the illocutionary act category of the speaker utterances. The tool used in collecting and analyzing the information was the speech video of President Joe Biden and the script acquired from the internet. The result of this research confirmed that there was 41 information and the researcher observed five types of the illocutionary act by using Searle’s theory in President Joe Biden’s speech which are assertive, directive, commisive, expressive, and declarative. The most dominant was assertive illocutionary act that implies stating, announcing, reporting, assertion, claiming, telling, informing, assuring, complaining, and concluding.

  • Indonesian Sign Language System Analysis for Deaf Students at SLB Negeri 7

      Abstract: This research aimed to determine the kinds and how sign language used by Deaf students in SLB Negeri 7 Jakarta, especially during the current Covid-19 pandemic. It was preceed as descriptive qualitative research which complied with observation and questionnaire method for data collection, continued by data analysis in accordance with Pierce’s Semiotics theory. The sample data was taken from the sign language produced by Deaf students at SLB Negeri 7 Jakarta. It was analyzed with SIBI Dictionary to find the prudeced sign meaning. This research resulted that SLB Negeri 7 Jakarta used SIBI as the main language on the learning activity and communicate between teachers and Deaf students.

  • Translation of Positive Emotion Words in Red Queen

      Abstract: This study aims to identify and analyze the types of positive emotion and the technique of translation applied to translate the positive emotion words found in the novel Red queen. The method of collecting data in this study was conducted through a documentary method. Furthermore, descriptive qualitative method was applied for analyzing the data. The theories of category of emotions concept and technique of translation were used to analyze the data. There are three types of positive emotion found in the novel. Moreover, only four out of eighteen techniques of translation applied in the novel including literal, amplification, transposition, and particularization.

  • Politeness in Using Mandailingnese Personal Subject Pronouns in Medan

      Abstract: This research aims to explain and reveal Politeness in Using Mandailingnese Personal Subject Pronouns by trying to find out of the types, the way and the reason of used mandailingnese personal subject pronouns mostly by people in Medan around Lingkungan Kelurahan Bantan Timur. The theory of this research used Leech (2014) Brown&Levinson (1987) theory. This research took 25 respondent and conducted quantitatively. The data was collected by using questionnaire that distributed to different people. The finding of this research shows that Mandailingnese Personal Subject Pronouns are mostly used by people live at Lingkungan Kelurahan Bantan Timur. The First Personal Subject Pronouns Au/Ku with 89 times chosen (51%), Second Personal Subject Pronouns Ho/Hamu/Amu with 118 times chosen (67%), Third Personal Subject Pronouns Ia/Halai with 115 times chosen (65%). The reason why people live at Lingkungan Kelurahan Bantan Timur use Mandailingnese Personal Subject Pronouns are determine by gender, situation, age and familiarity. The reason of people using Mandailingnese Personal Subject Pronouns were making no distance/gap, adapting the situation, knowing the rules of communication and learning from family also the findings of this research revealed that four parameters of politeness influenced chosen of pronouns, and the use of the pronouns of Mandailing People itself influenced the level of politeness.
