  • Light Snow Precipitation and Effects on Weather and Climate

      The objective of this work is to better understand light snow (LSN) precipitation measurements (precipitation rate (PR)<0.5mm/h) collected by optical present weather sensors (OPWS), weighing gauges, and spectral probes that are important for meteorological and hydrometeorological applications. Observations collected during the Satellite Applications for Arctic Weather and Search and rescue (SAR) Operations (SAAWSO) project that took place over Goose Bay, Newfoundland (NFL), Canada were studied to assess LSN characteristics and instrument sensitivities. Two case studies representing extreme environmental conditions temperature between 0 and −35°C, and snow occurrence for the SAAWSO project are presented. The ice crystal size and shape of LSN using a new platform called Ground Cloud Imaging Probe (GCIP) were obtained between 7.5 and 930μm over 60 channels at 15μm intervals. The measurements from the GCIP, Laser Precipitation Monitor (LPM), weighing gauges, and OPWS were used in the analysis. The results suggested the following: (1) LSN occurs at about 80% of time over the Arctic regions; (2) LSN can play a significant role in cooling at the surface and dehydration of the upper levels; and (3) OPWS can respond to LSN conditions better than weighing gauges. It is concluded that OPWS and spectral probes can improve measurement of LSN, including snow particle shape and size distribution with sizes <0.5mm. Further research on LSN impact on weather and climate simulations is needed.

  • Mechanics of Accretionary Prisms and Fold-and-Thrust Belts Based on Limit
           Analysis

      The first of the two objectives is to present the theory of limit analysis (LA) and its application for determining the collapse mechanism (CM) characterizing the complex, active fold within a fold-and-thrust belt or an accretionary wedge. The theory applies to fluid-saturated materials corresponding typically to upper crustal conditions. The potential of this approach is illustrated by comparing the various CMs, which could occur at the front of an accreting wedge, including friction, delamination, and compaction deformation mechanisms resulting in either straight or curvy ramps for a thrusting oriented either hinterland or foreland. Such hinterland thrusting combined with a change in depth of the active decollement would be typical of triangular zones. In the process, it is shown that LA reproduces and extends naturally the classical critical Coulomb wedge theory. The second objective is to document how the predictive potential of the kinematic approach of LA is combined sequentially with the geometrical constructions of fault-related folds. The resulting method is called sequential limit analysis and provides the means to determine, for example, the complete sequence of thousands of thrusts, each thrust being captured from its onset to its arrest because of the onset of a mechanically more favorable event.

That potential will continue to escalate with current and continued human encroachment into risk areas. With the help of geophysical techniques many of those risks can be better understood and quantified, thereby minimized and at least partly mitigated through accurate, site-specific, and proper planning and engineering. On occasions these hazards simply cannot be avoided, but better characterization and therefore understanding of the subsurface geology and natural processes responsible for the threats is possible through integration of various cost-effective geophysical methods with relevant geotechnical, geomechanical, and hydrogeological methods. With the enhanced characterization possible when geophysics is incorporated into natural hazard analysis, potential risks can be better quantified and remediation plans tuned to minimize the threat most natural hazards present to civilizations. In this article we will first review common geophysical methods that can be and have been utilized in studying natural hazard prone areas, then we provide selected case studies and approaches using predominantly our own examples, and finally a look into the future detailing how these methods and technologies can be better implemented and thereby more time- and cost-effective and provide improved results.

      The mechanisms driving plate motion and the Earth's geodynamics are still not entirely clarified. Lithospheric volumes recycled at subduction zones or emerging at rift zones testify mantle convection. The cooling of the planet and the related density gradients are invoked to explain mantle convection either driven from the hot interior or from the cooler outer boundary layer. In this paper we summarize a number of evidence supporting generalized asymmetries along the plate boundaries that point to a polarization of plate tectonics. W-directed slabs provide two to three times larger volumes to the mantle with respect to the opposite E- or NE-directed subduction zones. W-directed slabs are deeper and steeper, usually characterized by down-dip compression. Moreover, they show a shallow decollement and low elevated accretionary prism, a steep regional monocline with a deep trench or foredeep, a backarc basin with high heat flow and positive gravity anomaly. Conversely directed subduction zones show antithetic signatures and no similar backarc basin. Rift zones also show an asymmetry, e.g., faster Vs in the western lithosphere and a slightly deeper bathymetry with respect to the eastern flank. These evidences can be linked to the westward drift of the lithosphere relative to the underlying mantle and may explain the differences among subduction and rift zones as a function of their geographic polarity with respect to the “tectonic equator.” Therefore also mantle convection and plate motion should be polarized. All this supports a general tuning of the Earth's geodynamics and mantle convection by astronomical forces.

      The observation of microseismicity has raised the interest of the seismological and geoengineering communities in the last decades, and a significant effort has been spent to develop or improve methodologies able to perform seismological analysis for weak events at a local scale. This effort was accompanied by the improvement of monitoring systems, resulting in an increasing number of large microseismicity catalogs. The interest in microseismicity, involving a synergy among different scientific communities, is in part due to their occurrence both in consequence of natural processes in active regions, swarm areas, hydrothermal and volcanic environments, but also in relation to human activities, e.g., in proximity of mining areas, geothermal systems, oil and gas fields, and water reservoirs. The analysis of microseismicity is challenging, because of the low amplitude and high-frequency content of recorded seismic signals. Whereas many techniques only rely on a minor information provided by microseismicity data, full waveform recordings contain a broad information on the physical processes at the microseismic source as well as on the properties of the surrounding media. This paper reviews recent methodological developments in seismology, which exploit full waveform recordings, upon the analysis of their amplitude, frequency, duration, and polarization properties or the direct modeling of their waveforms, to infer microseismic source properties. We specifically review recent advances targeting the problem of the detection of weak microseismic signals, the automated location using full waveforms, the determination of source parameters through focal mechanisms, moment tensor, and finite source inversion, and the classification of microseismicity waveforms and their attributes. A particular care is given to the assessment of the automation potential of these methods, which is a requirement toward the analysis of massive microseismicity data sets. The review discusses the potential and limitations of many developed techniques, and highlights recent promising ideas, which can significantly contribute toward a better understanding of microseismic processes in the next future.

      Mountains, through atmospheric processes, play an integrated role in weather systems and climate systems. In turn, weather and climate over and nearby mountains are modified depending on environmental conditions. Mountain size, shape, slope, aspect ratio, and orientation along the water sources affect the weather systems; they can intensify fronts, eddies, vortex, rotors and turbulence, visibility, and precipitation. Depending on their location and height, precipitation type as snow over the mountains contributes significantly to hydrometeorological cycle and ecosystem. Increasing temperatures because of a possible climate change can reduce river discharges during warm seasons. Therefore, accurate measurements of climate change impact on the mountains are required. On the other hand, obtaining measurements over the mountainous regions are extremely difficult because of strong winds, cold temperatures (<0°C), mountain slopes, and heavy snow precipitation as well as instrumental issues. New developments on measurement strategies and instruments, and developing multiscale numerical models with detailed cloud microphysical processes and boundary layer parameterizations can reduce uncertainties in the weather and climate prediction. In this review, the challenges related to collecting measurements, numerical model predictions, and climate change issues over and nearby mountains will be emphasized.

      The paper presents a review of El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and selected environmental consequences at a range of spatial scales. The fundamentals of ENSO are summarized in a descriptive way, and the reader is provided with the key facts from the history of ENSO research as well as with recent developments in understanding the oscillation. Subsequently, a discussion on a potential initial driving force that begins the warm ENSO episode is given, and the inference is limited to the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation which may be controlled by solar forcing. Later, the insight into the ENSO history is provided, with a scrutiny about the most recent phenomena and the ENSO variability over the geological time. The core section of the paper focuses on three environmental consequences of ENSO: irregular fluctuations of the Earth Orientation Parameters (EOPs), climatic and hydrologic teleconnections that allow migration of the ENSO signal to remote regions of the Earth (the teleconnections are explained using the specific European example), and sea level change in the equatorial Pacific and Indian Oceans. The instances explain that ENSO is a phenomenon that impacts the dynamics of the entire Earth and controls some geophysical and environmental parameters of the atmosphere and hydrosphere at regional and local scales.

      Seismic tomography is a powerful tool for illuminating Earth structure across a range of scales, but the usefulness of any image that is generated by this method is dependent on our ability to quantify its uncertainty. This uncertainty arises from the ill-posed nature of the tomographic inverse problem, which means that multiple models are capable of satisfying the data. The goal of this review is to provide an overview of the current state of the art in the assessment of uncertainty in seismic tomography, and issue a timely reminder that compared to the rapid advances made in many other areas of Earth imaging, uncertainty assessment remains underdeveloped and is often ignored or given minimal treatment in published studies. After providing a historical perspective that dates back to the pioneering work of the early 1970s, the factors that control solution nonuniqueness are discussed, which include data coverage, data noise, choice of parameterization, method used for data prediction and formulation of the inverse problem. This is followed by a description of common methods used to assess solution uncertainty and a commentary on their strengths and weaknesses. The final section of the review presents four case studies involving data sets from Australia and Europe that use different methods to assess uncertainty. The descriptive nature of this review, which does not contain detailed mathematical derivations, means that it is suitable for the many nonspecialists who make use of seismic tomography results but may not have a full appreciation of their reliability.
