      Swedish plastics technology firm Nexam Chemical Holding AB has acquired compatriot Plasticolor Sweden AB, a privately owned masterbatch manufacturer. Headquartered in Lomma, near Malmö, Plasticolor Sweden has production facilities in four countries and generates annual turnover of about SEK86 million. The transaction was completed in December 2017.

      In France, international polymer-based materials producer A. Schulman, Inc has significantly increased capacity at its masterbatch manufacturing site in Givet. According to the company, the plant is now its largest for the production of masterbatches in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Elsewhere, A. Schulman reported year-on-year gains in both net sales and net income in the first quarter of its 2018 fiscal year.

      According to reports in the German and international business press, Cologne-based chemicals producer Lanxess AG has joined forces with US private equity firm Apollo Global Management to submit an offer for all or part of the Specialty Chemicals division of Dutch company AkzoNobel NV. No information was available on the size of the bid, but AkzoNobel is said to value the unit at between €8 billion and €12 billion [ADPO, January 2018].

      In the USA, stabilizers specialist Addivant has expanded production capacity for its high-performance antioxidant Ultranox® 626 by more than 40% at its Morgantown plant in West Virginia. The phosphite-based antioxidant is used in the stabilization of a wide variety of polymers, including polyolefins, elastomers and engineering plastics, the company reports. According to the company, the patent-pending product, which is based on heritage Dow Corning silicone technology, delivers stable, long-term slip performance without migration across film layers to facilitate the processing of BOPP films for packaging applications. The new masterbatch received its market launch at Fakuma 2017.

Described by the company as ‘a breakthrough solution’, the range of Polarfin ® additives being developed are based on a patented block copolymer additive technology that modifies the surface chemistry of a polyolefin-based material. So, the new additive can both improve and prolong the anti-fog and anti-drip properties of agricultural film, the firm says.

      UK-based sustainable speciality chemicals producer Croda International posted net sales of £334.6 million (c. €377 million) for the third quarter of 2017, an increase in reported currency terms of 6.1% from £315.3 million a year earlier. Positive currency translation effects boosted the sales figure by 1.7% in the quarter. For the first nine months of the year, sales rose 12.8%, including a currency translation benefit of 8.8%.   • San Francisco prohibits sale of furniture, children's products treated
           with flame retardants

      The US city of San Francisco has banned the sale of new upholstered furniture and certain children's products ‘made with or containing an added flame retardant chemical’. The California city's Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to approve the proposed legislation, becoming the first municipality in the country to enact such a ban. Elsewhere, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has reached a final decision on the use of phthalate plasticizers in children's products after several years of deliberations.
