  • EFFECT OF TIME ON THE HYDRAULIC PERFORMANCE OF WATER NETWORKS

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: N. Abdelazim; M. Kamal, Y. Abdelmonem
Abstract: This paper discusses the results of a hydraulic simulation for the effect of time on the hydraulic performance of water networks. The case study area was defined and data about activities, water demand, and land topography was presented. WaterCAD software was used to design the water network using three different pipe materials: Steel, UPVC, and Concrete, based on water demands of the water nework joints in the year 2007. The hydraulic performance was checked in the years 2017, 2030, and 2050, taking into consideration the increase in both water demands and roughness with time. The hydraulic simulation showed negative pressures in some joints in the network, especially in the case of steel pipes. The study proved that action plans with many scenarios through time, in the three cases, should be set involving pipe and/or pump replacement to ensure the sustainability of the service with the required hydraulic performance.

  • Effect of Water Table Position on the Stability of Tunnel

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Md. Mahmud Sazzad; Shantonu Hore Joti, Md. Mahfuzur Rahman
Abstract: Tunnel is an underground structure used to convey the traffic. Construction of a tunnel in rock is a difficult task. In instances where tunnels are situated at shallow depths, the stability of the tunnel and its lining is notably affected by the adjacent surcharge loadings resulting from new building constructions or excessive loads on the ground surface. Stability of the tunnel crest also depends on the position of the water table. This study shows the effect of the water table position on the displacement behavior of tunnel at the tunnel crest. The assumption in this study is that the rock mass is homogeneous and isotropic. Three distinct positions of the water table are taken into consideration. . A shallow circular tunnel with a thick lining of concrete is analyzed with the help of numerical simulation.
The utilization of numerical simulation has become prevalent in predicting rock mass convergence during tunnel excavation. Employing numerical analysis in tunnel design serves to mitigate fractures and failures across various tunnel types, effectively managing and minimizing the risks associated with tunnel construction. The analysis in this context utilizes the FLAC3D finite difference software package. From the numerical study, it is observed that the position of the water table affects the displacement behavior of the tunnel. The tunnel crest experiences the maximum displacement when the water table encounters the tunnel crest.

  • Management of Domestic Water Closed Loop System

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Carlos Armenta-Déu
Abstract: The paper describes a new technological process to reuse, thermally and hydraulically, the water in
home installations. The aim of the process is to reduce water wasting and take advantage of residual
thermal energy to minimize energy expenditure. The system is especially developed for home
installations although it is also suitable for larger facilities. Filtering processes based on porous media
ensure the physical and chemical water quality while chlorination or disinfection by ultraviolet
radiation guarantees bacteriological quality. A closed loop avoids water losses in community ducts and
allows recovering thermal energy of residual water.

  • Ensuring the Protection of Flood Embankments: A Vital Necessity

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Birendra Kumar Singh
Abstract: In the face of flooding events, safeguarding flood embankments becomes imperative. These situations
often involve rivers with significant water depth and velocity, leading to the exertion of considerable
thrust due to the presence of standing water and the flow's speed. These embankments are typically
constructed using compacted non-cohesive soil. To prevent erosion of the embankment, it is crucial that
the thrust of water applied to it remains within the bearing capacity limits of the compacted soil.
Moreover, the determination of the embankment's bottom width is a critical factor, computed using
bending equations in order to withstand the force exerted by the water. This multifaceted approach
ensures the resilience and effectiveness of flood embankments in safeguarding against flooding
      incidents.

  • Estimation of BOD of Banganga Nalla of Bhopal City Using Statistical
           Methods

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Nagaraj Sitaram
Abstract: Water is a precious natural source without which life cannot be sustained. Surface water has been the main source of supply for all our purposes. It is also has been the most convenient sewer for industry and municipalities. Estimation of water quality parameters using statistical and other mathematical models are gaining importance because they give more rational basis for water quality planning. An attempt has been made in this paper to estimate Bio-Chemical oxygen Demand (BOD) of the Banganga Nalla. The time-series of BOD data for 2-years are analysed using statistical methods like moving average, single exponential smoothing method (SES) and adaptive response-rate single exponential smoothing method (ARRSES). The ARRSES method is superior as compared to other methods.

  • Integrating Respondents’ Knowledge in the Moheshkhali Island MSP: A
           Framework for Sustainable Management Planning

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Mohammad Saydul Islam Sarkar; Md. Mazaharul Islam
Abstract: Across the globe, efforts are underway to establish comprehensive plans for oceanic regions, aimed at fostering sustainable governance and management of these vital environments. One such approach gaining prominence is marine spatial planning (MSP), which aims to systematically arrange the utilization of ocean space and resources as well as facilitate harmonious interactions among various human activities. This method is increasingly being embraced as an integral tool in the realm of sustainable ocean and coastal management. Yet, time and resource constraints frequently limit the availability of data for MSP creation, as well as people's engagement and participation in the MSP process. This study shows how respondent observations may be utilized to establish the causes for MSP development and implementation in a consistent manner. The research reveals how respondents give significant information about MSP growth while also creating a welcoming environment for stakeholders to share their own views and engage in the planning process. For Moheshkhali Island, a public engagement survey was taken to generate spatially clear information on stakeholder values and management preferences. The survey revealed that respondents knew about the ocean and coastal area, believed that the ocean and coastal area could be used beneficially where there might be some arguments, and gave their opinions on proper ocean management, which is needed and possible. It also revealed that ocean management is challenging because of its vast area, user-user conflicts, natural calamities, scarcity of rules and regulations, and also paucity of people's consent. They believed that adequate planning is essential in the MSP process, as is willingness, cooperation between different development tasks, and the management of user-user disputes. People on Moheshkhali Island were almost aware of the MSP, the planning for ocean governance and management, and also expected to see a step on the part of the implementation of the MSP in their area. They expressed their views on MSP development as a timeconsuming issue for ocean management, that MSP would benefit local people’s livelihoods, and that the ocean would be sustainably used by the advancing MSP at Moheshkhali Island.
