Abstract: During the eighteenth century, the Italian peninsula witnessed many cultural changes coming from abroad, among which figured a new way of conceptualizing and experiencing the night. The dissemination of Enlightened ideas accelerated societal changes and solicited new literary endeavors. As the neoclassical season was burgeoning, there was an absence in the literary canon of acclaimed and national epic poems, a once-prestigious genre that elsewhere in Europe had already been replaced by the novel. This essay focuses on Il Vespro and La Notte, the last two unfinished sections of Il Giorno, Giuseppe Parini’s epic and satirical poem, and investigates the ways in which the Milanese poet analyzes the changes in his representation of the night. Through textual and thematic analysis, the essay underlines the original aspects of Parini’s antiphrastic depiction of the night.

Abstract: L’essai reconstruit le milieu culturel italien de la deuxième moitié du dix-huitième siècle et en souligne les caractéristiques par rapport aux contextes européens. Si de nombreuses œuvres allemandes ou anglaises se servent souvent du français avant d’être traduites en italien, d’autres passent directement à l’italien. C’est le cas des Poesie di Ossian traduites par Melchiorre Cesarotti, œuvre qui est aussi une expérience linguistique et culturelle, puisqu’elle se propose comme fenêtre ouverte sur un monde complètement nouveau, dont la mélancolie et la nuit représentent des fondements thématiques cardinaux. L’expérimentalisme linguistique de Cesarotti trouve dans sa traduction un point de rupture avec la tradition classique, qui ouvrira la voie à la grande poésie romantique.

Abstract: L’articolo intende analizzare il ruolo della notte come momento privilegiato per il manifestarsi di visioni di defunti ed entità soprannaturali nelle Visioni sacre e morali di Alfonso Varano, pubblicate postume nel 1789, e nell’“Appressamento della morte,” composto nel 1816, di Giacomo Leopardi. Nonostante l’impianto moralistico di tali opere e il loro debito alla tradizione medievale e soprattutto dantesca, i poemetti presi in esame dimostrano che il fenomeno delle visioni è fortemente caratterizzato da elementi, quali terrore e meraviglia, che compaiono anche nei romanzi gotici che nello stesso periodo si stavano diffondendo nel resto d’Europa e particolarmente nel contesto anglosassone. La notte, pertanto, confermandosi lo spazio temporale più propizio per l’apparizione degli spiriti, contribuisce alla creazione di un immaginario “fantasmagorico” italiano moderno, suggerendo un’interpretazione delle due opere scelte in termini di una ghost story italiana ante litteram.

Abstract: Questo contributo analizza i temi della notte e dell’indefinito nell’opera di Giacomo Leopardi, muovendo dalla concezione preromantica del notturno, dalla Philosophical Enquiry di Burke e dalla meditazione zibaldoniana intorno al primato gnoseologico della facoltà immaginativa. Attraverso il confronto con il pensiero di Novalis sul motivo della lontananza e con la psicologia sartriana de L’imaginaire (1940), s’intende mostrare come la notte, nell’opera leopardiana, rappresenti la dimensione estetica privilegiata per la manifestazione dell’immaginario, in una prospettiva che, non solo delinea un’estetica del lontano e dell’indefinito, ma apre anche alla specificità fondativa, nei confronti della coscienza, dell’atto immaginativo, operando lo stesso ribaltamento nella gerarchia delle facoltà che Sartre porrà in essere oltre un secolo più tardi.

Abstract: Testo peculiarmente instabile, nella lunga storia editoriale della poesia leopardiana, l’idillio che per convenzione denominiamo “Odi, Melisso” porta anche, negli anni 1819–26, il titolo “Lo spavento notturno.” L’accostamento del sostantivo “spavento” e dell’aggettivo “notturno” non è privo di echi per un’analisi storico-culturale del pensiero leopardiano e dei modi in cui questo affronta temi che sono al cuore della riflessione post-illuminista: da un lato, la natura e l’origine della paura; e, dall’altro, la metamorfosi nel rapporto tra l’essere umano e la notte. In particolare, in questa sede, suggerirò la possibilità che il lessema possa obliquamente rimandare alla definizione clinica del disturbo infantile noto – ancora oggi – come pavor nocturnus; nella conclusione, indicherò come tale congettura possa ulteriormente confermare l’idea dell’idillio come trascrizione verbale e dialogica di un’esperienza quintessenzialmente pre-verbale.

Abstract: Questo articolo indaga il tema della notte e la funzione poetica del personaggio di Faust all’interno delle prime sezioni dei Canti Orfici (“La Notte” e i “Notturni”) di Dino Campana. Campana dichiarò di voler fare del suo libro un “piccolo Faust,” e nomina proprio Faust come io-lirico della “Notte.” Inoltre, sono presenti espliciti richiami testuali alla scena “Notte di Valpurga” della tragedia goethiana, parzialmente tradotta da Campana in una lettera del settembre 1917. In entrambe le opere, la notte permette la violazione dello status quo e consente all’io di valicare i propri confini. Se il notturno faustiano presenta continue metamorfosi e/o travestimenti dei personaggi in scena e include un rituale d’iniziazione cui lo stesso Faust prende parte, la notte campaniana diventa luogo e momento di trasformazione, secondo modalità carnevalesche, e di iniziazione ai culti misterici, che verranno studiate e approfondite nell’articolo.

Abstract: Il presente articolo offre un attraversamento del tema, ma sarebbe meglio dire del “sentimento” della notte, nella poesia di Volponi, nella quale è presente sin dalle prime raccolte, e non cessa di prodursi in immagini intense nei versi della maturità e della vecchiaia. In particolare, si intende dimostrare la problematica evoluzione della notte dalla originaria dimensione lirica, legata alle stagioni naturali della terra, in cerca di una simbiosi con la vita interiore del poeta (sulla quale la bufera bellica ha lasciato ferito e cicatrici), a una nuova lucida e a volte angosciata percezione della notte, ormai tradita dall’uomo che la proietta su uno sfondo insonne e inerte di struggenti fantasmi lirici (come per esempio la luna).

Abstract: This essay investigates the representation of traumatic loss in Goliarda Sapienza’s Destino coatto, a collection of short narrative fragments published posthumously in 2002. I explore these texts by focusing on the original representation they offer of temporality in relation to trauma and loss, refracting a condition of death-in-life into temporal and spatial images. In particular, the night, accompanied by images of immobility and enclosed spaces, is a key signifier that represents a protective shield from the destructive force of life. Reflecting the liminal state of a subject in crisis, several texts are set on the threshold between day and night, and between indoor and outdoor spaces. Against the endless re-enactment of trauma, Sapienza stages a quest for immobility, a state of death-in-life that at the same time rejects and protects life.

Abstract: L’articolo intende mostrare la pervasività della figura della notte nell’opera narrativa di Fleur Jaeggy e segnalare dei percorsi nella sua prosa, partendo dal fascino dell’autrice per la notte, momento elettivo della sua creazione oltre che sfondo costante delle sue opere letterarie. Della rappresentazione della notte in Jaeggy viene posta in primo piano la dimensione perturbante, enigmatica e spiazzante, propria dei personaggi così come della poetica dell’autrice. Ancora, il saggio si propone di mostrare la ricca, originale e multiforme centralità dell’esperienza e dell’immaginario della notte nella prosa di Jaeggy e nel suo mondo letterario, individuando passaggi in cui la notte si manifesta ora quale luogo dell’anima, ora spazio di incontro con fantasmi e doppi, ora punto di congiunzione fra dimensione spirituale e spettrale. Si indagano infine gli scenari tenebrosi in cui i protagonisti di Jaeggy trovano una forma di apparente distacco o, addirittura, di preparazione alla morte.

Abstract: Nessuno prima del poligrafo Tomaso Garzoni da Bagnacavallo aveva immaginato di trasformare un’opera letteraria in un edificio per i folli. Per una civiltà che coltiva la suprema dignità della natura umana, la prospettiva delle linee e la geometria architettonica, l’oscurità della mente diviene la più terribile minaccia. Secondo Ariosto, Astolfo non avrebbe potuto rintracciare sulla Luna la pazzia, che “sta qua giù, né se ne parte mai” (Orlando furioso 34.81.8). Quasi su invito del suo autore, Garzoni cerca di contenere la diffusione della follia e, come in un giorno di “festa di tutti i matti,” apre al mondo “le porte” della sua “fabrica” per accogliere gli “onorati spettatori.” L’ospidale de’ pazzi incurabili, apparso nel 1586 presso tre tipografie, ripercorre la storia umana senza cercare una linea evolutiva, ma individuando le falle della ragione e il diffondersi dell’insania. In questo percorso irregolare, simile ad un segmento tratteggiato, fatto di vuoto e pieno, assenza e presenza, la pazzia rivela la sua natura poliedrica e si presenta nella molteplicità delle manifestazioni particolari, mostrando il lato tenebroso del cammino degli uomini. L’ospidale si colloca al tramonto di un secolo e di una civiltà letteraria e all’alba di una nuova concezione dell’arte e del mondo.
