  • Response of Wheat Crop to Potassium Fertilization Under Rain-fed
           Conditions in Semi-arid Regions

    • Abstract: Wheat is regarded as one of the major field crops that are mainly grown under rain-fed conditions in Jordan. However, wheat productivity is relatively lower than the world average. This is primarily due to the prevailing drought conditions as a result of poor distribution and low amounts of rainfall. Research studies showed that K can markedly improve wheat yield and quality under water deficit conditions. The objective of the current study was to investigate the effect of soil-applied mineral potassium (K) fertilizer on the yield and growth parameters of two local durum wheat varieties under rain-fed conditions in Jordan. And to determine the rate of K needed to obtain the optimum wheat yield. Two field trials were conducted under rain-fed conditions in two locations in Jordan. Two local durum wheat varieties were grown during two successive growing seasons. Five different rates of K were applied at sowing time. A randomized complete block design with four replications was followed. The results showed that soil K application exhibited a significant effect on wheat crop grain and biological yields of both varieties at the two locations. However, an increasing trend in plant height, harvest index, and thousand-grain weight with increasing K application rate was noticed. Potassium application to soil can alleviate the adverse effects of drought stress on the wheat crop by improving growth and yield attributes.

  • An Automated Hardware-Software Module Monitoring Acheta Domesticus
           Population at Breeding Facilities

    • Abstract: The growing population on planet Earth and the deteriorating environment are leading humanity to a swift depletion of resources. And if it is possible to reduce the use of some, it is impossible to eliminate, or even decrease the consumption of protein. Thus, an alternative solution needs to be found. For the past several decades scholars have suggested to breeding crickets as an alternative source of protein. Numerous studies have been made, which resulted in a simple description of the process and a manual of how to establish a breeding cricket farm. However, the fluctuations in breeding conditions stemming from the lack of automation in this sphere, are a hazard to the safe growth and development of the cricket breeding stock. This paper focuses on the developed prototype of a video monitoring equipment developed using machine learning technologies aiming to help identifying hazardous conditions based on the training received in the process of the experiment and numerous tests. The prototype has shown a 70% accuracy rate, yet is capable of determining when the crickets are subjected to various stressors, namely water, nutrition, thermal and methane. Via observing the cricket population, the prototype is learning to alert the breeder as to the potential danger, thereby preserving the cricket population, and increasing the chances of a future mass production of protein from crickets.

  • Biodiversity and Food Diversity of Farms Using Agroecology in Benin Cotton
           Areas

    • Abstract: Farms biodiversity and food diversity of agricultural households are evaluated to understand some agroecology effects on cotton farms. This is a part of socio-economic analysis of the agroecological  transition underway in cotton zones of Benin. The surveys covered 509 farmers in 5 municipalities: Banikoara, Kandi, Ouassa-Péhunco, Parakou and Savalou. Data collected are crops diversity, livestock diversity, natural vegetation, trees and pollinators of each farm and the various food consumed within 24 hours before the survey on each farm. Scores obtained by farm on each criterion were used to calculate the farm biodiversity index and household food diversity index; and the averages by type. Student's Chi--square test and Kruskal Wallis multiple comparison test were used to compare index averages, to analyze difference between farm types according to their ''Test'' or ''Control'' status. Analysis based on ''Tool Agroecology Performance Evaluation (TAPE)'' method shows that surveyed farms are unsustainable (biodiversity index

  • Socio-Economic Factors Influencing Woodlot Farming Adoption from Crop
Farming in Tanzania: A Case of Mufindi District

    • Abstract: The study stressed to examine socio – economic factors influencing woodlot farming adoption in Mufindi district, Tanzania. The study used questionnaire to collect data from 40 woodlot owners (sample size). The collected data were analyzed using multinomial logistic model. Findings shown that the high income generating expectation, land size, and assets acquisitions both influence woodlot farming adoption positively and significantly while education level influence woodlot farming adoption negatively and significantly. Basing on the findings, the study concluded that socio-economic factors that influence woodlot farming positively and significantly are income generation expectation, land size, and assets acquisitions meanwhile education level influence woodlot farming adoption negatively and significantly. Based on the findings, this study recommends that there is a need for government to support the woodlot owners by providing subsidies including inputs such as land, fertilizers, and quality seeds through Mufindi district officials so as to create employment opportunities among majority of rural households and raise their standard of living. If all these recommendations are implemented, then improvement in the income from woodlot farming would ultimately be realized.

  • Morphological and Physical Diversity of Mangoes (Mangifera indica L.) of
Local Varieties Found in Noun and LekiĆ© Localities (Cameroon)

    • Abstract: Cameroon has an amazing variety of local mangoes whose potential is poorly exploited. The aim of this study was to characterise the physical and morphological diversity of mangoes in two agro-ecological regions with high potential for mango production. This experiment was conducted between February and July 2021 using ten local mango varieties. These were 'German', 'Bamoun', 'Lady' and 'American' mangoes found in Noun and 'Papaya', 'Dshang Dshang 1', 'Dshang Dshang 2', 'Kousa Dog', 'Garoua' and 'Ladies' mangoes identified in Lekié. Ten ripe fruits of each variety were harvested on three different trees in the same area. A total of 23 morphological and physical parameters were measured. Multivariate analysis based on PCA showed four groups of varieties in decreasing order of importance: group 2 (Papaya, German and American mangoes), group 4 (Garoua, Dame Lékie, Kousa Dog), group 3 (Dshang Dshang 2, Dame Noun, Dshang Dshang 1) and group 1 (Bamoun). Group 2 varieties had good quality for pulp mass to stone mass ratio (5.58±1), size index (10.6±3.22), sphericity index (0.97±0.35), fruit volume (391.5) and lateral fruit diameter (11.05±0.89). However, varieties in group 1 (12.87±3.08) and group 3 (10.7±2.27) have a high proportion of kernels in the fruit and a high kernel density, respectively. There is a wide diversity among the varieties examined. This provides valuable information of the different stakeholders in the mango value chain, i.e., the industry, nurserymen and consumers.
