  • On the Translation of Poetic Line Drawing from the Perspective of

    • Abstract: Poetic line drawing is a great challenge in translation since its simplicity and realism not only use the simplest words to concisely depict the fact but also enable readers to understand in numerous ways. Taking Tianjingsha·Qiusi as an example, this paper discusses the translation strategies of line drawing in poetry from the perspective of transitivity. By the comparison of three translations, it is found that line drawing can trigger multiple processes in the mental cognition of readers, and in most cases, different translators tend to maintain a certain process type and abandon others, which might lead to some loss of the poem’s original charm and the translation turns out to be inaccurate. However, our study shows that such loss can be remedied through form equivalence strategy, for neither of the process types can be representative of all but only form equivalence can generate the same effect of the original poem.

  • A Comparative Study of Distance Teaching in Elementary Schools Between
           China and the United States Under COVID-19

    • Abstract: The outbreak and quick spread of COVID-19 quickly shut down almost all educational institutions in different parts the world by mid-March, 2020, presenting severe challenges to educators all over the world. The paper investigated the teaching situation of elementary schools in China and the United States during the epidemic period. The results show that the common challenges faced by the two countries in distance education are: 1) Elementary school students are young and have poor self-control ability, which requires close supervision and cooperation from parents; 2) Teachers’ information technology level is limited, lack of network teaching ability. There are some problems in Distance Education in American elementary schools, such as parents can’t urge students to study at home, digital technology inequality, low online attendance rate and so on, which further exposed the unfair problems in education. The problem of distance learning in elementary schools in China is that the learning resources are mainly subject knowledge, and the ability and methods of teachers to serve students’ autonomous learning are insufficient. American distance learning experience is to make full use of the rich network learning resources and professional distance teaching platform, and pay attention to the cultivation of students’ network autonomous learning ability. China’s distance teaching experience is to give play to the advantages of centralized management, organize famous teachers to record high quality courses, establish the Air Classroom platform, and provide high-quality classroom teaching resources. Therefore, basic education institutions in both countries should strengthen the training of teachers’ distance learning ability, improve the information-based teaching environment, learn from the experiences of both sides, and explore an effective mode of integrating online and offline education resources, so as to meet the challenges of basic education in the post epidemic era.

  • A Corpus-Based Study on Construction of “Anger Adjectives +
           Prepositions” in World Englishes

    • Abstract: Anger as one of the basic emotions has attracted much attention. In the construction of “Anger adjectives + prepositions”, the temporal duration of the Anger adjectives is closely related to their prepositional collocates. Differences in the use of the Anger adjectives and their prepositional collocates might be captured in the world English varieties. The corpora used in this study cover eight varieties of English. The five varieties of English used in Canada, Philippines, Singapore, India and Nigeria are from the International Corpus of English (ICE). The China English corpus (ChiE) consists of news texts crawled from six Chinese English media. American English is taken from the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) and British English is taken from British National Corpus (BNC). By investigating the use of the Anger adjectives and their prepositional collocates in the eight varieties of English, this paper finds that, on the continuums of the temporal duration of Anger adjectives, most varieties of English are closer to American English, whereas only Singapore English is close to British English. The distribution of Anger adjectives in the English varieties is largely in accordance with the Concentric Circles of world Englishes whereas the continuums of the temporal duration of emotions present a new insight into their relations.

           Xianzu’s and Shakespeare’s Plays

    • Abstract: On the basis of the relevant research status at home and abroad and in-depth study of the drama texts, combining with Chinese and Western cultural traditions, social backgrounds, and the creative thoughts of playwrights, this paper compares and analyzes the similar characteristics, different artistic functions and underlying reasons of the “garden” image and the “forest” image in Tang Xianzu’s and Shakespeare’s plays.

  • Life Writing in the Era of Genetics: Contemporary Genetic Risk Narratives
           in Great Britain and America

    • Abstract: The development of genetic science brings forth a third group besides the healthy and the ill: the high-risk group who carries certain disease-related genes. In the era of genetics, people try to assess risks with statistical numbers and eliminate risks by Western medical measures. In this context, personal genetic risk narratives (usually in the form of memoirs) emerged in Great Britain and America in the 1990s. The thesis has a close reading of three British and American genetic risk memoirs and wants to find the characteristics and values of the new genre. The memoirs are featured by their vivid description of the narrator’s difficult and complex situation in face of genetic risks. In an era when the body is dominated by statistical numbers, these narratives make personal meaning of impersonal statistics. Genetic risk narratives express a strong belief in genetic technology and Western medical myth. However, the narrative divergence and self-contradiction in the memoirs exposes the limitation of genetic determinism and thus deconstructs the Western medical myth.

  • Language and Linguistic Orthography

    • Abstract: Orthography is an undeniably unique human achievement; this work aims to provide a comprehensive overview of this achievement, by clarifying the concept of orthography and acknowledging its significance. Besides that, it demonstrates the broader types of orthographies that will face any foreign language learner—language orthography and linguistic orthography—and highlights the distinction between the two. In addition to discussing relevant work on orthography, it concludes with an evaluation of the two types, highlighting the differences in many aspects that are related to function, development and usage. Such work will enhance our understanding of orthography and surely contribute, not only to linguistic, but also to language research in general.

  • A Study on Evaluation of the Integration of Chinese and Foreign Cultures
           into Oxford Junior High School English Textbooks on the Basis of
           Multicultural Education

    • Abstract: This paper studies the learner evaluation results of Chinese and foreign cultural materials in Oxford Junior High School English Textbook of Yilin Edition (2nd semester of Book 8) with a questionnaire. It finds that the content of Chinese and foreign culture in this edition is rich and diverse, which can cultivate students’ cross-cultural identity and communication ability. However, some typical problems exist, such as uneven distribution of Chinese and foreign cultures, lack of cultural diversity awareness, lack of interdisciplinary nature, falling to stimulate students’ learning enthusiasm.

  • A Study on the Postmodern Narrative Features in Toni Morrison’s Song
           of Solomon

    • Abstract: Toni Morrison (1931-2019) is renowned as the Nobel and Pulitzer Prize-winning American novelist. Her third novel Song of Solomon was written in the context of postmodernism, which embodies a variety of postmodern narrative features. Postmodern works are frequently inclined to ambiguity, anarchism, collage, discontinuity, fragmentation, indeterminacy, metafiction, montage, parody, and pluralism. Such postmodern narrative features as parody, metafiction and indeterminacy have been manifested in Song of Solomon. In this novel, Toni Morrison employs the strategy of parody in order to subvert traditional narrative modes and overthrow the western biblical narrative as well as African mythic structure. Meta-narratives are also used in the text to dissolve the authority of the omniscient and omnipotent narrator. By questioning and criticizing the traditional narrative conventions, Morrison creates a fictional world with durative indeterminacy and unanswered problems. Through presenting parody, metafiction and indeterminacy, this paper attempts to analyze the postmodern narrative features in Song of Solomon and further explore Morrison’s writing on the African-American community and its future development.

  • An Investigation on the Status Quo of the Cultural Character Competence of
           Pre-Service English Teachers from the Perspective of Core Competency

    • Abstract: Since the promotion of the New Curriculum Standards, the teaching of English subjects has taken the development of students’ core competency as the specific goal, and attached great importance to the cultivation of the four dimensions of students’ language ability, cultural character, thinking quality and learning ability, among which cultural character has become a focus of recent researches on English teaching. Under the quality education and the educational concept of “people-oriented”, in-service and pre-service English teachers should also have excellent cultural qualities so as to play the role of cultural disseminators. Thus, the present paper aims to understand the status quo of pre-service English teachers’ cultural character competence through questionnaire surveys and interviews, and then analyze the root causes of this situation, and explore effective measures to improve the cultural character competence of pre-service English teachers.

  • A Review of Visual Metaphor Based on Visual Typologies and Verbalization

    • Abstract: This study is a result of literature review of visual metaphors in the fields of linguistics and advertising. The collected fifty papers came from CNKI. It provided an overview of previous literature, in terms of multi-modal studies of visual metaphor in advertising, the typologies of visual rhetoric and the verbalization of visual metaphor. Based on the identified research gaps, this study proposed suggestions for future research to enrich the theoretical framework of visual metaphor. The review found that the study of visual metaphors remain insufficient in three aspects. Firstly, the relevant studies are mostly in the field of marketing, and lack of extension in linguistics. Secondly, most studies concerned about the cognitive effects of visual metaphor in advertising, but the cognitive processing form of visual metaphor was less focused. Furthermore, although some studies have proved that verbalization is necessary for the comprehension of visual metaphors, there is still no clear conclusion regarding the specific verbalization forms of different types of visual metaphors. Specifically, three syntactic structures have been hypothetically proposed for fusion-structured visual metaphors, as “A is like B, A is B, A with B”, but no empirical evidence suggests which is the most effective in conceptual representation of fusion-structured visual metaphors in advertising. Through the analysis of the differences between these syntactic structures, the author proposed that the verbalization form “A is B” should be the most effective in representing fusion-structured visual metaphors in the context of advertising for its basic metaphorical structure, easily comprehensible form and strong transformational effect.

  • American Soft Power Through Hollywood Superhero Movies: The Case of the
           Trilogy of Captain America

    • Abstract: The Captain America trilogy exemplifies American ideals: individuality, democracy, liberty, equality, and patriotism through the life and identity of its protagonist Steve Rogers. From the blatant display of American cultures to American values to the artistic imitation of American policies, the Captain America trilogy incorporates all mentioned elements and presents the world the compelling stories where heroes are created, sacrifices are made, damages are done—all for the protection of humanity. As the curtain closes, superheroes always emerge as the saviors—to all. The assertion of power, as the trilogy demonstrates, is no longer through the brutal force of military power but wielded through soft power, namely culture, values, and policies. Only through careful analysis of the storyline, character traits, dialogues, and images, one may discover hidden messages in the art that imitates life. As stated by Joseph Nye (1990), a political scientist, “the best propaganda is not propaganda”.
