  • CONSERVATION STATUS ASSESSMENT OF THE ENDEMIC HIERACIUM S. STR.
           (ASTERACEAE) OCCURRING IN SICILY

      Abstract: The current status of the majority of apomictic taxa, and therefore their priorities for conservation, are poorly known, and consequently, they are neglected by conservationists. In Sicily 8 species and 4 subspecies of Hieracium s. str. occurs. Eleven taxa are endemic to the area, one has a wider distribution. These taxa were not evaluated within the recent project “Red List assessment of plants and fungi in Italy” because collectively considered with insufficient and unreliable distribution data. The global conservation status of the endemic Hieracium s. str. taxa occurring in Sicily was assessed here using the IUCN categories and criteria, on the basis of the data collected during field surveys over 10 years. Criteria A, B, C and D were used in assessments. The assessment of punctual endemic taxa considered the real threats to which populations are subjected. Overall, 6 Critically Endangered, 2 Endangered, 1 Vulnerable and 2 Least Concern taxa were assessed. The knowledge of taxa, currently small in size and isolated from each other, allows for the planning of differentiated conservation strategies.

  • ALIEN PLANT SPECIES GROWING NEAR TRAFFIC LINE STRUCTURES IN THE
           TŘEBOŇSKO PROTECTED LANDSCAPE AREA

      Abstract: The occurrence of non-native species is one of the priorities for nature and landscape protection. Protected areas are among the most valuable parts of the landscape, so nature conservation takes care not only of rare and endangered species, but also of alien species. The aim was to map out the occurrence of invasive and other non-native plant species on model examples of two types of propagation vectors - roads and railways in the Třeboňsko Protected Landscape Area. The total of 75 alien plant species were identified in 68 locations, of which 28 are listed in the Black, Gray and Watch Lists of alien species in the Czech Republic. The most abundant families were Asteraceae, Poaceae and Amaranthaceae. No difference in the occurrence of alien plants between the observed types of propagation vectors was found. The most dangerous invasive species growing along the main roads and railways were: Reynoutria japonica Houtt. var. japonica, Impatiens glandulifera Royle, Helianthus tuberosus L., Solidago sp., Conyza canadensis (L.) Cronq., and Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) P.B. Another non-native species that was captured successfully along rail tracks and road sides was Digitaria sanguinalis (L.) Scop. subsp. sanguinalis. Near roads, a significant spreading of the expansive halophilic species Puccinellia distans (Jacq.) Parl. was also found. The rare growings of Plantago coronopus L. near a road and Alopecurus myosuroides Huds. near a highway were also reported. The occurrence of many aliens and spreading species was discussed.

  • NEW RECORDS OF NATIVE AND ALIEN VASCULAR PLANTS FROM ABRUZZO, LAZIO AND
           MOLISE NATIONAL PARK (ITALY) – AND ADDITIONS TO THE FLORA OF ABRUZZO AND
           MOLISE ADMINISTRATIVE REGIONS

      Abstract: The Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, a flagship conservation area in Italy, is a hotspot of floristic diversity and a crossroad for plant biogeography. In this work, as a result of recent field studies in the Park and herbarium revisions, we report 10 taxa new or confirmed for the Abruzzo administrative region, and 3 for the Molise administrative region. Moreover, 47 taxa of vascular plants (41 native and 6 alien taxa) that are new or confirmed for the flora of the Park are reported. Five taxa are excluded from the flora of the Park.

  • EVALUATION OF METALS AND METALLOIDS IN WHEAT (TRITICUM AESTIVUM L.) UNDER
           APPLICATION OF ZEOLITE AND COMPOSTED COW MANURE

      Abstract: Today, large parts of the world are exposed to heavy metal pollution. The highest contamination with heavy metals is found in industrial areas, around large cities and mines. This experiment was carried out in order to evaluate uptake and accumulation of metals and metalloids in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) under zeolite and composted cow manure application. The experimental design was factorial according to a completely randomized design with three replications. To contaminate the soil metals and metalloids included lead, nickel and arsenic were mixed with the soil. In this experiment, four different amounts of zeolite and composted cow manure include (zero) (control), 0.5, 1 and 1.5 percent of the soil weight were investigated in soil contaminated. The concentration of lead, nickel, and arsenic were determined in different parts of the plant including root, stem and grain at final harvest stage. Results showed that the effect of zeolite, compost and interaction between zeolite and compost on concentration of lead, nickel and arsenic in root, stem and grain were significant. The maximum and minimum accumulation of lead, nickel and arsenic under application and non-application of treatments were in root and grain, respectively. In general, in the contaminated soils, application of zeolite and compost by 1.5% is effective in reducing the contamination below the standards level of food. So it can increase food safety and food security.

  • EFFICACY OF DIFFERENT HERBICIDES ON WEED CONTROL, GROWTH INDICES AND
           FORAGE YIELD IN ALFALFA (MEDICAGO SATIVA L.)

      Abstract: In order to investigate the chemical management in alfalfa newly planted, an experiment in a randomized complete block design with four replications was conducted in the research farm of Iranian Research Institute of Plant Protection located in Meshkindasht, Iran (2014-2016). Treatments includes EPTC (5 l/ha), Metribuzin (750 g/ha), 2,4-DB (3 and 3.5 l/ha), Bentazon (3 l/ha) and Imazethapyr (0.5 and 1 l/ha) on newly planted and established alfalfa, as well as control treatments without weeds control and with manual weeding during alfalfa growth season. The results revealed that the most effective herbicides to decrease the broadleaf weeds density were Metribuzin (99 and 97% in the first and second cuttings, respectively) and Imazethapyr (1 l/ha) (91 and 90% in the first and second cuttings, respectively). The lower effect was related to EPTC application (44 and 36% in the first and second cutting, respectively). As regards the the effects on narrow-leaf weeds density the highest herbicides efficiency was related to EPTC (100% in both cuttings), Metribuzin (87 and 91% in the first and second cuttings, respectively), Imazethapyr (1 l/ha) (81 and 90% in the first and second cuttings, respectively). In conclusion, Imazethapyr application (1 l/ha) was more suitable than other herbicides.

  • EFFECT OF ECOTOURISM ON PLANT DIVERSITY, SOIL AGGREGATE STABILITY AND
           PARTICULATE ORGANIC MATTER IN NATIONAL KHOJIR PARK IN TEHRAN

      Abstract: This work assesses the effects of ecotourism on biodiversity, soil POM and ASI in a semi-arid region in Iran. Three zones as High-pressure (0 to 50 m from the road, visitors density: > 20 persons ha-1 day-1), Mid-pressure (50 to 100 m from the road, visitors density: 5-20 persons ha-1 day-1), and Low-pressure (100 to 150 m from the road, visitors density: < 5 persons ha-1 day-1) ecotourism were selected. Indicators of biodiversity, richness, and evenness (0.77, 5.55, and 0.79, respectively) were significantly higher in the High-pressure zone. Soil bulk density (1.95 g m3 ), pH (7.98), and EC (0.82 ds m-1) were significantly higher in the High zone whereas a higher content of total C (0.39%), total N (0.13%), available P (4.83 mg kg-1), available K (3.21 mg kg-1), available Ca (34.91 mg kg-1), and available Mg (5.66 mg kg-1) were found in the Low-pressure zone. POM-C and POM-N were significantly followed by Low (0.21 and 0.03 g kg-1) > Mid (0.14 and 0.02 g kg-1) > High (0.08 and 0.01 g kg-1) zones, respectively. The Low-pressure zone with a population density of only 5 people per ha is associated with enhanced soil biodiversity and nutrient cycles.

  • ASSESSING CULTURAL ECOSYSTEM SERVICES DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC AT THE
           GARDEN OF NINFA (ITALY)

      Abstract: Green areas provide Cultural Ecosystem Services (CESs), that is, the ecosystem outputs that enable a range of experiential and intellectual activities. These include health promotion, recreation, enjoyment of the cultural heritage, and aesthetic experiences. The demand for CESs has grown during the first half of 2020, when most of the EU Member States had to face a stringent lockdown to contain the spread of the Covid-19, and people have undergone considerable psychophysical distress. In this framework, the Garden of Ninfa, one of the most visited Gardens of Italy, with its natural, historical, and architectural beauties delivers precious CESs, which have however been poorly studied. In this research, through a survey, we investigated the CESs delivered by the Garden of Ninfa in the immediate post-lockdown period, providing at the same time a monetary evaluation. The results show that people mostly visit the Garden of Ninfa for the aesthetic experience, followed by the resonance in terms of culture or heritage and health promotion; the combination of water bodies and fauna is highly effective in delivering CESs. The monetary evaluation, ranging between 1.0 and 2.7 Million EUR per year, may stimulate the replication of similar initiatives, especially in highly altered areas. The safety measures put in place by the governance of the Garden of Ninfa have safeguarded the tour experience from the Covid-19 fear of infection.
