  • The Uncommons: An Introduction
    • Abstract: The idea of "the uncommons" imposed itself on us (the guest editors) in the context of our experience of a very specific moment in South America, when the socio-environmental conflicts that have accompanied the consolidation of neo-extractivism became increasingly visible. Neo-extractivism is a model of development primarily based in the large-scale extraction of natural resources for export (see Acosta 2010; Gudynas 2011). This model has taken form under both conservative and progressive governments, with the former continuing and deepening previous trends of privatisation of revenues generated by exports, while the latter, tending to use those revenues to reduce poverty, increase social participation and ensure ... • Introduction aux incommuns
• Mekong Scales: Domains, Test Sites, and the Uncommons
    • Abstract: From its starting point on the Tibetan Plateau, the Mekong River winds its way southeastward. Over a stretch of almost five thousand kilometres, the great river flows through the Chinese Yunnan province, briefly enters Eastern Myanmar, travels along the long border of Thailand and Laos, and cuts south through mideastern Cambodia, before turning into the delta system of Southern Vietnam and ending its journey in the South China Sea. The massive system sustains the lives of over 60 million people, innumerable species and varied ecologies. It also sustains the cosmologies – and the political and economic dreams – of political elites, businesses, NGOs and people living by, on and from the river. In 1957, due to ... Read More

  • A Place at the End of a Road: A Yin-Yang Geography
    • Abstract: James Scott (2009), in his search for the anarchist recesses of history, famously said that states have difficulty climbing mountains. Echoing Braudel (1966), Scott (2009, 42–43) argued that agricultural states struggled to "climb hills," as the "frictions" of rugged terrain and distance set "relatively inflexible limits" on their ability to supply outposts with food and supplies. According to this version of politics, premised on agricultural production and distribution and on the physical presence of state representatives on peripheries, states might mount expeditions into the hills, but their "physical, coercive presence … was episodic, often to the vanishing point" (62–63). Thus, Scott makes much of the ... Read More

  • In between the Cosmos and "Thousand-Cubed Great Thousands Worlds":

    • Abstract: Sekai [世界 World] (1) Buddhist term. (a) (From the Chinese translation of Sanskrit lokadhātu. "Se" means the three times of the past, present and future, "kai" means the East, West, South, North, Above and Below). The whole time and space in which shujou [Sanskrit: sattva], that which have life, lives. Land and environment where people and living things live. The shaba [Sanskrit: saha] world. Sanzen-daisen-sekai [thousand-cubed great-thousands-worlds].Recent scholarship on Indigenous cosmopolitics has shed new light on the complexity of the encounter between Indigenous practice and modern practices such as science and state bureaucracy (Blaser 2009; de la Cadena 2010, 2016). In contrast to modernist or rationalist ... Read More

  • Things in (Un)Common: Two Reflections
    • Abstract: With the inauguration of its Palapa satellite system on Indonesian Independence Day in 1976, Indonesia's territorial claims to both land and water reached also to the skies. An archipelago of over 17,000 islands, stretching across 3,000 miles – from unruly Aceh on the island of Sumatra to the contested Western half of the island of New Guinea – became connected by relays of television, telephone and radio signals over 22,300 miles above the earth. The satellite epitomised President Suharto's New Order's emphasis on modernity and development. Beaming broadcasts of what was then Indonesia's sole television network, state-owned and operated, it also amplified ideologies of progress, fostering a specific mode of ... Read More

  • Uncommon Things
    • Abstract: Uncommon things – those that challenge or unsettle; that evoke surprise, curiosity, even bewilderment; things that resist appropriation and may call some of our deepest assumptions into question – these are key to anthropology's recent (re)turn to questions of ontology. By "things," simply meant are the forms in which whatever we study as ethnographers comes to command our attention. They may appear as material objects; as practices or concepts; as events, institutions or beliefs; as gifts, mana, traps, actants, spirits or dividuals; or as structures, perspectives, networks, systems or scales. Some might not yet be named. Such things may be thought of as uncommon both in the sense of being unusual, unsettling, even ... Read More

Read More

Read More

  • The Nature of Urban Heritage: The View from New Westminster, British
           Columbia
    • Abstract: "New Westminster Mayor Jonathan Cote Hopes to Connect More Neighbourhoods to Downtown Waterfront." This was a headline in the 7 June 2015 issue of the Georgia Straight (Smith 2015), a weekly arts, entertainment and public affairs newspaper for Metro Vancouver, Canada. The story concerned the completion of a pedestrian and cycling bridge connecting the city of New Westminster's historic downtown with its newest park: a four-hectare, multi-use recreational facility on what were, in the recent past, Fraser River shipping terminals. "Connecting" (or sometimes "reconnecting") the city to the Fraser River is both a political goal and a piece of political rhetoric frequently invoked by public officials in this Metro ... Read More

  • Ritual Kinship among Hindu Pilgrimage Priests of Allahabad
    • Abstract: The city of Prayāga, known as Allahabad, is located at the confluence of the Gaṅgā and Yamunā rivers. According to orthodox Hinduism, a third river – the Sarasvatī – also flows through this site; its current is invisible because it is underground. This location, whose significance is elevated by a myriad of myths and legends, is host both to the Kumbhamelā ("fair of the urn") every 12 years and to the smaller annual pilgrimage known as the Māghamelā ("fair of the month of māgha," a solar-lunar month that overlaps January and February).1 These two massive fairs bring together different types of participants: the pilgrimage priests (tīrthapurohita), lay pilgrims come to tread on sacred ground, the ascetics (sādhu) ... • Rendering Life Molecular: Models, Modelers, and Excitable Matter by
           Natasha Myers (review)
    • Abstract: Natasha Myers's Rendering Life Molecular: Models, Modelers, and Excitable Matter is at once a detailed account of the everyday practices of protein modellers in academic research labs and classrooms and an innovative exploration of the normative framings of biological object visualisation and the scientific pedagogies within which protein modellers learn and work. In the opening pages, anthropologist and science studies scholar Natasha Myers contextualises protein modelling, and structural biology in general, within the broader context of the life sciences and, in particular, the emphasis on genetics throughout the 1980s and 1990s. She writes that in the current post-genomic era, "life scientists can be seen ... Read More

  • Malignant: How Cancer Becomes Us by S. Lochlann Jain (review)
    • Abstract: S. Lochlann Jain's ethnography/memoir Malignant: How Cancer Becomes Us is organised in a linear fashion, which gives the initial impression that the book follows an expected illness trajectory: diagnosis, treatment, recovery and the concomitant biographical interruption (Bury 1982). However, the book's contents are not linear, nor do they hinge on an individual narrative. Instead, the author deploys her own breast cancer experiences as an opening through which to explore knowledge production surrounding the cancer complex. As such, Jain traces "lines of knowledge" (155) relating to cancer causation, screening and treatment. Primary emphasis is placed on how uncertainty in these knowledge bases results in ... Read More

  • Nature in Translation: Japanese Tourism Encounters the Canadian Rockies by
           Shiho Satsuka (review)
    • Abstract: In the intriguing ethnography Nature in Translation: Japanese Tourism Encounters the Canadian Rockies, Shiho Satsuka explores the ways that Japanese tour guides in Banff, Alberta, translate culturally situated knowledge about nature for tourists and for themselves. Satsuka traces the lives of several guides who emigrate from Japan in search of Canada's "majestic nature," often represented in the Japanese media as idyllic. Inevitably fraught with tensions and contradictions, the practice of cultural translation is shown by Satsuka to entail frustrations and misunderstandings that entangle the guides in larger webs of political, economic and historical currents, shaping and reshaping their experiences and ...
Read More

Read More

  • Jeunes et djihadisme. Les conversions interdites by Denis Jeffrey et al.
           (review)
eds. by Jimena Paz Obregón Iturra et Jorge Muñoz R (review)
