  • Introduction: Language Sustainability in the Circumpolar North
    • Abstract: In the popular imagination, and even within more specialised academic circles, the Arctic and subarctic regions of the world continue to be perceived as spaces of sparse population density and, following this, with very little cultural or linguistic diversity. While not heavily populated relative to most other areas of the world, the circumpolar regions of North America and Eurasia still remain home to speakers of numerous diverse Indigenous languages, despite long histories of colonisation by external groups, thus making these regions a critical space for examining how processes of language endangerment, shift, or revitalisation play out.We maintain a focus on the North as an area of endangerment in the sincere ...
Read More

  • "Will the Real Semi-Speaker Please Stand Up?": Language Vitality,
Semi-Speakers, and Problems of Enumeration in the Canadian North
    • Abstract: Over the past three decades, language endangerment has increasingly become an issue of interdisciplinary concern. Language activists, non-governmental organisations, linguists, and anthropologists all warn about the shrinking diversity of the world's languages. Many also call for immediate action to document and preserve endangered languages before they disappear. These calls are supported by some truly dire statistics, which inform most academic discussions of language endangerment (Austin and Sallabank 2011; Crystal 2002; Krauss 1992; Nettle and Romaine 2002). For example, by the end of the 21st century, almost 90 percent of the world's 7,106 languages are predicted to be extinct (Ethnologue 2014; UNESCO 2003). ... Read More

  • Sustaining Linguistic Continuity in the Beringia: Examining Language Shift
and Comparing Ideas of Sustainability in Two Arctic Communities
    • Abstract: Imagine you have a people, bound by kinship, speaking the same language, living within a distance of some 60 kilometres (38 miles), and yet divided not only by a geographical border but also by human-made borders. For almost half a century, they live in total isolation from each other, and, when they finally meet, they are no longer able to speak to each other because one of the groups has lost its language. This is indeed a story of the Yupik people, who throughout history have been known under a common designation of "Siberian Yupik Eskimos" or simply Yupik (the plural form is Yupiget). With a total population of some 2,300 to 2,500 people inhabiting the areas around the Bering Sea, the Yupik people constitute ... Read More

  • Hybrid Identities and Indigenous Language Sustainability: Reflections on
Language Contact and (Neo-)Colonial Practices on Sakhalin Island
    • Abstract: In 2013, I was hired as an anthropologist by one of the oil companies working in Sakhalin, which is one of the biggest Russian islands located in the Far East and administratively related to the Sakhalin region. The island's total population is about 498,000 people (Census 2010). The majority of inhabitants are concentrated in the south of Sakhalin, whereas numerically small Indigenous groups (Nivkh, Uilta, Evenki, and Nanai) mainly inhabit the island's central and northern parts. My duties included proposing a set of recommendations that could help the company to build better relations with the Indigenous peoples and to facilitate language maintenance among them. However, very soon it became clear to me that, at ... Read More

Read More

  • Secrecy and Sustainability: How Concealment and Revelation Shape Vepsian
           Language Revival
    • Abstract: Secrecy, adopted as a social, shared exercise, came to my attention during the first few days of my 2009 fieldwork. It was not only among Veps, a Finno-Ugric minority of northwestern Russia, that I noticed the behaviour but also often among Russians living in this territory (see Figure 1). As I was getting to know people and they were sharing stories about their lives and daily habits, I regularly heard statements such as: "I will tell you a secret" and "Do not tell anyone. It's a secret!"1 During my fieldwork, these remarks occurred frequently (and still do). Such secretive remarks were made by people of different ages, living in both urban and rural settings. However, what appeared to differ is the way that ... Read More

  • Northern Affairs and Relations: An Interview with Gunther Abrahamson,
conducted by Jasmin Habib with commentary by Harvey Feit
    • Abstract: Gunther Abrahamson died in Ottawa April 2015 after dedicating more than five decades of his life to Indigenous concerns and, in particular, co-governance. He was born in Berlin in the mid-1920s but was sent out of Germany on the kindertransport to the United Kingdom in 1938 by his mother, who would perish in a concentration camp soon thereafter. Gunther remained in Scotland through the war and until the 1950s, when he would begin his journey to Canada. He reflects on some of his initial experiences in the North as well as how these affected him in later years in the interview I conducted with him in Ottawa in January 2009. A distant relative (his sister had married my grandfather's brother), I had known very little ... Read More

Read More

  • Body, Nature, Language: Artisans to Artists in the Commodification of
           Authenticity
    • Abstract: The anthropology of tourism and anthropological studies of geographical, economic, and political peripheries have long noted how tourism has been used, at least since the 19th century, to structure and legitimise local, regional, national, and imperial identities in the making of boundaries and the distribution of political power and economic resources (compare, for example, Bruner 1989; Kirshenblatt-Gimblett 1998; Urry 1990). This article is a contribution specifically to reflections on what it means to be constructed both as a political and economic periphery and as a rural heartland of the nation; both as a bastion of authenticity and as a commodity. The Romantic nationalism of industrial capitalism roots the ... • Personhood, Collectives, and the Human-Animal Distinction: The Cases of
           the Cameroon Grassfields and Madagascar
    • Abstract: The aim of this article is to provide a comparative exploration of the ways in which personhood, self, and what I shall call "collectives" are constituted and how this impinges upon the human-animal distinction in two ethnographic contexts: the Cameroon Grassfields and Madagascar. After a brief presentation of the issues pertaining to method and terminology, the first section examines how personhood is conceptualised and constituted through the exchanges occurring during marriage and initiation in the southern parts of the Cameroon Grassfields, while the second section examines how taboos as both rules and performative acts constitute persons in various Malagasy groups. The third section moves beyond the apparent ... Read More

  • Agency and Agendas: Revisiting the Roles of the Researcher and the
           Researched in Ethnographic Fieldwork
    • Abstract: One of the key strengths of socio-cultural anthropology and our central methodology–ethnography–is its ability to identify and make sense of ways of knowing and being in different social worlds. During the latter half of the 20th century, anthropologists have become ever more conscious and critical of how our own ways of knowing as social researchers affect what can be known through our research (Clifford and Marcus 1986; Scheper-Hughes 1992). Through the works of anthropologists such as Rosalie Wax (1971) and Jean Briggs (1970), questions of reflexivity, positionality, and representation have become not only more than simply de rigueur in ethnographic writings but also integral to the scholarly rigour of ... • Nesting Expectations: What Can the Mexican and Argentinean Cash Transfers
Tell Us about the Development of Development?
    • Abstract: Cash transfers typically consist of regular payments to poor families from national states and, less frequently, from non-governmental organisations (NGOs). Their general aim is to improve poor families' living conditions. Most cash transfer programs in developing countries entail monetary allowances with the explicit aim of improving poor children's accumulation of "human capital." Nowadays, the designers, advocates, financers, donors, and implementers of such programs understand this accumulation to be necessary to break the reproductive cycle of poverty. Given that cash transfer policy language is not only descriptive but also, most often, prescriptive and prospective, it has proven difficult to contrast the ... Read More

  • Legacies of Violence: History, Society, and the State in Sardinia by
           Antonio Sorge (review)
    • Abstract: My research experience with Sicilian culture and world view has taught me that there are a series of complexities and subtleties that make it difficult for outsiders to fully fathom the way of thinking of Sicilians (particularly in the rural areas). I realise that most, if not all, anthropologists could say the same thing about the various groups with which they work. What I find significant in the Sicilian case is that we also are dealing with a stereotype that has developed both outside of Sicily as a negative representation of the island's people and within Sicily as a tool that certain individuals, depending on circumstances, sometimes use to represent themselves to the outside world. During my first field trip ... Read More

  • Haunting Images: A Cultural Account of Selective Reproduction in Vietnam
           by Tine Gammeltoft (review)
    • Abstract: In this finely written ethnography, Tine Gammeltoft dives deep into the socio-moral factors guiding women's decisions to terminate their (desired) pregnancies in urban Vietnam. Haunting Images: A Cultural Account of Selective Reproduction in Vietnam follows 30 women in the multiple locations in which these decisions come to be: the 3D scanning room of Hanoi's Obstetric and Gynecologic Hospital where they are told that a fetal anomaly is detected, the antenatal care room where they are advised to terminate their pregnancy, and, finally, women's homes where their families and in-laws gather to narrate their own decision-making process. Gammeltoft reveals how, in each of these sites, the decisions are deeply entwined ... Read More

  • Mining Capitalism: The Relationship between Corporations and Their Critics
           by Stuart Kirsch (review)
    • Abstract: According to many international observers, the social and environmental impacts of the Ok Tedi mine, in Papua New Guinea, constitute one of the last decades' worst mining disasters. Since the mid-1980s, this large-scale copper and gold mine has discharged more than 2 billion metric tons of tailings, waste rock, and overburden into the Ok Tedi and Fly Rivers, causing colossal environmental degradation downstream. Consequently, the 30,000 villagers living south of the mining site, who are highly dependent on access to natural resources, have been unable to pursue their traditional subsistence practices. At the turn of the 1990s, they initiated a long-running campaign against the operator of the mine (BHP Billiton for ... Read More

  • Afghanistan Remembers: Gendered Narrations of Violence and Culinary
           Practices by Parin Dossa (review)
    • Abstract: Conducting engaged anthropology is the standpoint for this work by Parin Dossa. Dossa's stance builds on Judith Butler's (2009) work on the precariousness of all human lives, and in imagining our interconnectivity and interdependency, we may hope for a future in which violence is minimised and social justice prevails. A strength of this monograph is Dossa's examination of quotidian violence that is unseen and/or ignored, that is not necessarily articulated but, rather, is embodied, and that emerges through daily practices, including culinary practices. Dossa looks closely at gendered experiences of violence and how women, in particular, through their everyday household tasks and food work as mothers, also conduct ... Read More

  • Secure the Soul: Christian Piety and Gang Prevention in Guatemala by Kevin
           L. O'Neil (review)
    • Abstract: The pages of Secure the Soul read like an action novel rich with ethnographic narratives that highlight the interpersonal relationships that the ethnographer skillfully crafts with current and former gang members, pastors, drug addicts, and inmates. As expected in any ethnography of gang life, Secure the Soul juxtaposes stories of tortured loitering, the different forms of substance abuse that enables survival, vignettes of interpersonal posturing, the heaviness of death, and harrowing drives across different versions of urban decay with the aftermath of gang gun play. Yet, O'Neil's ethnography is not really an account of gang life in the stereotypical sense. It is classic ethnography–an analysis of how individual ... Read More

Read More

Read More

Read More

Read More
