  • Note from the Editors
    • Abstract: With this issue we conclude our three-year term as editors of Ghana Studies. Nana Araba Apt and Ama de-Graft Aikins served as sub-editors for the special section on “Aging in Ghana,” taking responsibility for soliciting and selecting those pieces. As always we are grateful to those who have entrusted their work to Ghana Studies and to those who served as reviewers of manuscripts. Editorial assistance was provided by Ian Saxine and Gavin Fort, funded by Northwestern University’s Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences. We would also like to thank Neil Kodesh and Chloe Lauer who helped smooth the transition in publisher from the University of Wisconsin’s African Studies Program to the University of Wisconsin ... • Money That Isn’t: A Qualitative Examination of the Adoption of the 1
Pesewa Coin and Biometric Payment Cards in Ghana
    • Abstract: From stock-piled cowrie shells (Arhin, 1995) to password-protected electronic money mobile wallets on mobile phones, the nature of and access to money in Ghana has evolved greatly over the past 500 years (see Figure 1, and Guyer, 1995). The introduction of Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs) to Ghanaian consumers by Trust Bank in 19931 heralded a new ageMoney and Banking in Ghana: A Brief Historyin the Ghanaian consumer’s relationship to money. It signaled an era of technology-enabled consumer access to cash in the formal banking sector. No longer were bank tellers the gatekeepers of people’s savings and current accounts: banked Ghanaians had the option of conveniently accessing their cash after banks were closed. ... Read More

  • Aging in Ghana: Setting Priorities for Research, Intervention and Policy
    • Abstract: Ghana’s aging population has increased seven-fold over a fifty year period—from 213,477 in 1960 to 1,643,381 in 2010 (Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), 2013). The current proportion of Ghanaians over 60 years is 5%; this is one of the highest proportions of that age category in sub-Saharan Africa (GSS, 2013). Over the next few decades, population aging in Ghana is likely to increase, like other African countries, at a rate that exceeds that of high income countries of Europe and North America (Ayernor, 2012; de-Graft Aikins et al, 2016; Minicuci et al., 2014). The socio-economic and socio-cultural challenges associated with aging in Ghana require interventions and policies that address the multifaceted needs of ... Read More

  • Not a Nurse, Not Househelp: The New Occupation of Elder Carer in Urban
           Ghana
    • Abstract: As Ghana goes through a demographic transition, in which people are living longer and with long-term, chronic diseases (de-Graft Aikins et al., 2012), families are experiencing a growing strain in caring for their elderly and frail members. Reciprocities across the generations are changing (Aboderin, 2006, Apt, 1996, Dsane, 2013). There is a growing demand for dedicated elder care providers to supplement the direct care provided by kin busy with work and school in Ghana and abroad. Middle-class households in urban and peri-urban areas tend to use the labor of househelp and fostered adolescents for this purpose, while wealthier households and middle-class urban households with access to migrant remittances ... • Elderly Women, Community Participation and Family Care in Ghana: Lessons
from HIV Response and AIDS Orphan Care in Manya Krobo
    • Abstract: On June 24, 2015, 74-year-old Maame Serwaa of Kumasi convened scores of disgruntled elderly women and men in the Ashanti region, dressed in traditional mourning cloths of red and black, to demonstrate in protest of the persistent power outages, worsening socio-economic conditions, and a distressed National Health Insurance Scheme in Ghana. The elderly people, mostly women in their 70s and 80s, embarked on the Emrewa Eesu (“old women are crying”) protest across the principal streets of Kumasi to present their petition to the mayor, Kojo Bonsu, for onward transmission to President John Mahama.1 Undoubtedly, this reality defied the popular representation of elderly people as docile and passive. By expressing their ... Read More

  • Health and Well-Being of Older Adults in Ghana: Social Support, Gender,
           and Ethnicity
    • Abstract: The increase in life expectancy has made health and well-being at older ages an important subject of inquiry in both fields of public health and sociology. Previous research has focused on high-income countries and graying populations in the world (UN, 2005). The phenomenon of population aging is fast becoming a reality in middle and low-income settings as well (UNDP, 2001, 2002, 2003). Globally, the proportion of persons aged 60 years and over has increased at an annual rate of 3.4 percent between the years 2000 and 2015 (UN, 2011; 2001a; Velkoff and Kowal, 2006). In sub-Saharan Africa, the proportion of persons aged 60 years and above is expected to increase from 36.6 million to 140 million by 2050; a rate of ... Read More

  • Household Composition and Well-Being of Older Persons in Ghana
    • Abstract: The trend of population aging, which until recently has been a unique characteristic of the populations of developed countries, is now spreading to the rest of the world. In most countries, improvement in healthcare services, decline in fertility rates and the accompanying lowering of dependency ratio appear to have contributed to the rise in the proportion of the elderly population (GSS, 2010). However, population aging has several implications for the general well-being of the entire population, especially the cohort of the elderly population. It is in line with this that the United Nations has over the last three decades led a campaign to mobilise efforts of governments and international organizations to address ... Read More

  • Aging Policies in Ghana: A Review of the Livelihood Empowerment against
Poverty and the National Health Insurance Scheme
    • Abstract: The African population is aging rapidly. According to Nabalamba and Chikoko (2011:2), “As of 2010, 36 million elderly people aged 65 years and over accounted for 3.6% of Africa’s population, up from 3.3% ten years earlier. In 1980, 3.1% of the population was elderly aged 65 and above and there has been a steady increase during the last forty years.” There is no end in sight to this rapid population growth of the elderly since it is projected that they could account for 4.5% of the population in Africa by 2030 and nearly 10% by 2050 (Nabalamba and Chikoko, 2011). Population growth of the elderly in Ghana is consistent with the continental level increase. According to the Ghana Statistical Service (2013) the ... Read More

  • Research On Aging in Ghana from the 1950s To 2016: A Bibliography and
           Commentary
    • Abstract: This bibliography tracks research conducted on aging in Ghana since the earliest studies in the 1950s. It was developed as a companion to the Ghana Studies special section themed “Aging in Ghana: Addressing the Multifaceted Needs of Older Ghanaians.” We aimed to identify the current state of multidisciplinary knowledge on aging in Ghana, as a backdrop to the special section submissions and to inform future research, policies, and interventions. We first describe the search strategy and then present a summary of the search results. We identified 115 eligible publications reporting studies or reviewing existing evidence from nine disciplines and focusing on six empirical areas. Drawing on a preliminary thematic ... Read More

  • Studying Older People in Ghana: Closing Reflections
    • Abstract: This special issue is a welcome and timely addition to our limited knowledge of the living conditions of older people in Ghana and the care and support they do or do not receive. Seidu Alidu, Ernestina Dankyi and Antoinette Tsiboe-Darko provide a very useful and clear overview of the legal framework and policy endeavours related to the welfare of older people in Ghana and raise several critical questions. Kojo Ayernor explores how ethnicity and gender affect support in old age and the consequences these factors have for health and well-being. George Domfe and Ellen Bortei-Doku Aryeetey focus on household composition and its impact on the well-being of older people. Deborah Atobrah draws our attention to active ... Read More

  • House of Slaves and “Door of No Return”: Gold Coast/Ghana Slave Forts,
Castles & Dungeons and the Atlantic Slave Trade by Edmund Abaka (review)
    • Abstract: Edmund Abaka’s House of Slaves and “Door of No Return” focuses on various conversations that took place within the compounds of the slave forts, castles, and dungeons in Ghana among major players and actors of the Middle Passage during the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. Abaka is mainly interested in exploring the ways in which ordinary people interacted with the owners of these historical landmarks and the voiceless walls that housed the slaves prior to their dispersals to the New World. Unlike a host of recent literature that mainly explains how people of African descent respond to these sites of memories (especially how they connect to the voices and the spirits of their ancestors embedded within the compound) ... • Staging Ghana: Artistry and Nationalism in State Dance Ensembles by Paul
           Schauert (review)
    • Abstract: This is an ethnographic study of the two Ghanaian national dance ensembles—the Ghana Dance Ensemble (GDE) and its offshoot the National Dance Company (NDC)—conducted substantively between 2004 and 2007. It aims to interrogate the nationalist identities of the groups set against an in-depth study of the individuals who make them up, and to illustrate evolving thinking and practices in relation to Ghanaian dance from the founding of the GDE in 1962 to the conclusion of the study in 2012.Schauert is continually mindful that Ghana’s charismatic founding president, Kwame Nkrumah, saw his substantial investment in the arts as a tool for promoting inter-ethnic nationalism and for promoting his philosophy of African ...
