  • About this Issue
    • Abstract: This issue of American Catholic Studies includes essays that nicely complement one another—a pair of pairs. Two articles address the scholarship on women religious and two address Catholic responses to poverty in the developing world and at home. The articles by Joseph G. Mannard (Indiana University of Pennsylvania) and Deirdre Raftery (University College Dublin) focus on discrete dimensions of the scholarship on women religious in the United States. Mannard examines the proliferation of communities of women religious in antebellum America. He speaks of a “convent revolution” to argue that the three decades between 1830 and 1860 can be viewed as the starting point of the growth and influence of ... Read More

  • The Catholic Enlightenment: The Forgotten History of a Global Movement by
           Ulrich L. Lehner (review)
    • Abstract: Ulrich L. Lehner’s recent work has forged a new field of historical scholarship on the significant but forgotten role Catholics played in advancing the goals of the Enlightenment. In the period from the Council of Trent (1545–1563) until the late nineteenth century, the “Catholic Enlighteners” comprised an immense range of religious and lay women and men. They were politicians, jurists, and sovereigns, educators and civil servants, philosophers, theologians, and prelates. The body of thought they represent is too complex and diverse to synthesize under a single formula, but several commitments and tendencies set them apart: Catholic Enlighteners engaged constructively with modern forms of thought, with other ... • Secret Habits: Catholic Literacy Education for Women in the Early
Nineteenth Century by Carol Mattingly (review)
    • Abstract: Over the past two decades the experience of Catholic nuns has moved from being “on the margins” of U.S. women’s history to becoming more integrated into the mainstream. Secret Habits by Carol Mattingly is a sign that this process continues to gain momentum. Mattingly, professor emerita of English at the University of Louisville, is a specialist in nineteenth-century women’s rhetoric. In her new book she re-examines Catholic female education through the lens of literacy. That is, the author uses convent schools in the Early Republic as a case study to test some accepted assumptions about the history of literacy in America, in particular, what she calls “the Protestant literacy myth” (2). Mattingly defines ... Read More

  • Plowshares: Protest, Performance, and Religious Identity in the Nuclear
           Age by Kristen Tobey (review)
    • Abstract: One of the most lamentable impasses that has existed and continues to exist in the Catholic Church in the United States is between the “Catholic Resistance” and the academy. I say this is lamentable because the intellectual output of the resistance movement in the church is incredibly rich in quality. In the present volume, Kristen Tobey has admirably attempted to bridge this chasm in her wonderful study of what she terms “Plowshares people” (14). What comes to the fore in her pages is an understanding that the actions that have taken place since the inaugural “Plowshares Eight” of September 9, 1980, really constitute a story of people and their relationships with one another, God, the church, the ... • Building Bridges, Not Walls: Nourishing Diverse Cultures in Faith by John
           Francis Burke (review)
    • Abstract: In light of the Eucharist and Pentecost, bridge building across cultures is an inherently Christian task. The fact that Catholic parishes serve increasingly diverse populations makes it a necessary one. The dehumanizing rhetoric against immigrants that the recent election normalized makes it an urgent one. I strongly recommend John Burke’s Building Bridges, Not Walls: Nourishing Diverse Cultures in Faith to lay and ordained ministers who are looking for guidance as they take up that task in their parish. This book provides parish leaders (and those preparing for ministry) with clearly-written theological, historical, and pastoral resources to advance intercultural relationships in a way that is ... • Seeking the Truth: An Orestes Brownson Anthology ed. by Richard M.
           Reinsch, II (review)
    • Abstract: From 1852, when Orestes Brownson published an anthology of his own essays, until Reinsch’s recent work, at least a dozen anthologies of Brownson’s works have been published. Selections of his works have also been published in anthologies of American literature, Transcendentalism, politics, religion in America, philosophy, and American Catholic history. Brownson was one of those public intellectuals who commented on various facets of American intellectual, social, and political issues. Scholars continued to be fascinated with his independent mind and his changing and developing intellectual life. Reinsch’s text is the latest and one of the best of these anthologies. After a brief, but very ... Read More

  • The Valiant Woman: The Virgin Mary in Nineteenth-Century American Culture
           by Elizabeth Hayes Alvarez (review)
    • Abstract: The Valiant Woman has been waiting to be written for a long time. Elizabeth Hayes Alvarez’s study investigates a figure—Mary, the mother of Jesus—who was pervasive in both secular and religious literature and art in the nineteenth century and yet whose cultural significance in the United States has not been fully explored or appreciated by contemporary scholars. Alvarez demonstrates that, despite Mary’s strong association with Catholics, before the twentieth century she was widely revered beyond the Catholic community and ultimately served as a “shared cultural figure whose content was one source (among many) for the maintenance and transformation of American gender ideology” (6). More specifically, Alvarez ... Read More

  • Power from the Margins: The Emergence of the Latino in the Church and in
Society by Bishop Ricardo Ramirez, CSB (review)
    • Abstract: Into this collection of essays the retired bishop of Las Cruces, New Mexico, distills a lifetime of pastoral experience. Each chapter follows a pattern: a personal experience, typically in his family, pastoral experience around a particular issue, and reflections on current challenges. Topics covered include family, passing on the faith, education, youth, social and political involvement, immigration, popular religion, worship, and Pope Francis (with whom he has more than a little in common). Ramirez frequently invokes examples from his upbringing in Bay City, Texas, on the Gulf Coast not far from Galveston, which included segregation: Latinos could use the pool only on Friday, the day before it ... • The Root of War Is Fear: Thomas Merton’s Advice to Peacemakers by
           Jim Forest (review)
    • Abstract: Having just celebrated the centenary of Thomas Merton’s birth in January 2015, I have found myself thinking a lot of the decades following the death of St. Francis of Assisi (d. 1226). As the years drew on during the mid-thirteenth century, the earliest followers of Francis who lived with him and knew him best continued to age and began to die. Concern began to arise about how to preserve the institutional memory bound up with “those who were with him,” as the first friars came to refer to themselves, and so a commission was formed to interview and record the stories of the saint from Assisi from those who had first-hand knowledge of those early days. Similarly, as we mark the milestones of Merton’s ... Read More

  • Fordham: A History of the Jesuit University of New York, 1841–2003 by
           Thomas J. Shelley (review)
    • Abstract: The growth of what became Fordham University, from very precarious beginnings 175 years ago to one of the nation’s most prestigious institutions of higher learning, is a remarkable achievement. According to author Thomas J. Shelley, a multitude of obstacles had to be overcome: precarious finances, virulent anti-Catholicism, pressures to adapt its curriculum and rules to bring Fordham into accord with the norms of American higher education, and the latter-day threats of its urban location. Fordham’s founder was John Hughes, then the very young bishop coadjutor of the Diocese of New York. His aim was to start a Catholic college as a way for his largely immigrant flock to rise out of poverty through ... Read More

  • Catholic Women Confront Their Church: Stories of Hurt and Hope by Celia
           Viggo Wexler (review)
    • Abstract: While there are in the United States alone thousands of women similar to the ten whom the author describes, fewer are as perceptive, well educated, and articulate as those whom Celia Viggo Wexler chose to interview for this book. Some are nationally and internationally known to those who follow contemporary church or social developments (Simone Campbell, Marianne Duddy-Burke, Diana Hayes, Frances Kissling, and the author herself), while the others are more regionally and/or topically focused (Barbara Blaine, Teresa Delgado, Sharon MacIsaac McKenna, Gretchen Reydams-Schils, and Johunda Sanders). The women’s lives are similar in several of their underlying convictions, as noted by Wexler in her introduction ... Read More

  • In the Lógos of Love: Promise & Predicament in Catholic Intellectual Life
ed. by James L. Heft, Una M. Cadegan (review)
    • Abstract: Taking the words of Pope Benedict XVI and Walker Percy as their inspiration, in 2013 organizers from the University of Dayton and the Institute for Advanced Catholic Studies at USC gathered Catholic scholars from around the country to reflect on four themes related to the hopes and challenges of the Catholic intellectual tradition (CIT) in the twenty-first century: (1) the historical context of Catholic intellectual work in the United States, (2) the place of CIT in the contemporary academy, (3) how controversies over gender and sexuality have shaped recent Catholic intellectual work, and (4) how media has transformed Catholic intellectual life. Eager to share the fruit of their conversations, the editors ... Read More

  • Prophecy Without Contempt: Religious Discourse in the Public Square by
           Cathleen Kaveny (review)
    • Abstract: Cathleen Kaveny’s declared purpose is to forge a new direction for discussion among political philosophers, lawyers, ethicists, religious studies scholars, and theologians about the role of religion in the public square. With irreconcilable dissension the order of the day, politicians and pundits would also do well to read this superior analysis of public discourse in general, and religiously grounded—or prophetic—rhetoric, in particular. Kaveny’s account places the American Puritan experience at the root of today’s discourse in the public square. The practice of religion, in the Puritan way, was rigorous in both content and rhetorical form, the latter a point of her penetrating study. The Puritan ... Read More

  • An Illustrated Framework for the History of Catholic Immigrant Aid
           Societies
    • Abstract: Exodus 23:9 commands “You shall not oppress a stranger, since you yourselves know the feelings of a stranger, for you also were strangers in the land of Egypt” (NASB). In response, Catholics have organized to assist migrants with issues they face in transit and resettlement. Over the years, these agencies have amassed records that document the forces shaping migration and their effect on human beings. An overview of three of the collections accessible to scholars at the Center for Migration Studies [CMS] in New York City outlines the development of Catholic immigrant aid agencies and identifies topics that might reward study. The first Catholics to concern themselves with issues facing migrants were ... Read More

  • The “Third Wave” is Digital: Researching Histories of Women Religious
           in the Twenty-first Century
    • Abstract: In the article, I will look at three areas: scholarship on the history of women religious,1 the status of the research field, and the sources and research tools now available to academics that herald a new wave in scholarship. These three areas are framed within a consideration of some of the challenges of the past, and some of the opportunities ahead. It will become clear that while former challenges have been overcome, others remain. I will argue that researchers can turn those challenges into opportunities for scholarship, by harnessing technological developments. The article concludes with a discussion of ways in which researchers can engage with the field of Digital Humanities, and makes specific reference ... Read More

  • The Beatification of Monsignor Romero: A Historical Perspective
    • Abstract: In March 1985 I struck up a conversation with a priest who later would become a cardinal. Since it would soon be the fifth anniversary of the death of Archbishop Oscar Romero, I asked him why his diocese had made no plans to commemorate this event. He answered that the archbishop of El Salvador was controversial and out of “prudential judgment” it was best that the church exercise caution concerning him.1 When later that week I mentioned this encounter with a colleague who was up-and-coming in Catholic conservative circles, he bluntly informed me that Romero had been a proponent of “Marxist liberation theology,” and not someone to be memorialized by the church. A few years later, I thought back to these two ... Read More

  • “Our Dear Houses Are Here, There + Every Where”: The Convent
           Revolution in Antebellum America
    • Abstract: In November 1856, Mother Michaella Jenkins, superior of Wheeling Visitation Monastery, reflected on the astonishing growth her religious order had experienced in America since her novice days in the Georgetown Monastery three decades before. In a letter to the superior of Baltimore Visitation Convent, Jenkins proudly observed that “our dear Houses are here, there + every where.” Jenkins certainly exaggerated, but not that much. At the time of her remark, the Visitation community within the United States comprised no fewer than ten convents and prestigious female academies scattered among the District of Columbia and Maryland as well as four other states on both sides of the Mason-Dixon Line.1 Staffing and ...
