  • Post-Pandemic/Pre-Centennial: Bloomsday 2021

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In contrast to the locked-down and limited virtual Zoomsday we all experienced during the past year of Covid-19, Bloomsday 2021 seemed to compensate for our long claustrophobic nightmare by featuring a head-spinning plethora of both digital and live events to choose from, with some spread over several weeks before the big day. It was as if the world was suddenly and simultaneously making up for lost time while getting ready for festivities being planned for the one-hundredth anniversary of the publication of Joyce's novel in 2022. So this year's commemoration of Ulysses gratefully came as a relief from last year's, but it also served as an anticipatory celebration prior to the upcoming centennial.Live activities ... Read More

  • "Ireland at the Bar": James Joyce, Myles Joyce, and the Maamtrasna Trials
           Revisited

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The 1882 Maamtrasna murders and ensuing trials, the most famous consequence of which was the wrongful conviction and execution of the Irish monoglot Myles Joyce, have continued to garner much public interest in Ireland. In April 2018, the President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins, awarded a posthumous pardon to Myles Joyce, the first such given for a conviction prior to the 1922 foundation of the Irish State. Literary representations of the events have an international reach, ranging from Anthony Trollope's 1883 Landleaguers to a 2001 romance novel by Andrew M. Greeley,1 but the best known is James Joyce's 1907 essay "Ireland at the Bar," written during his Trieste years, and, among Joycean readers, the Festy King ... Read More

  • A Postcard from Mr Joyce to Ms Beach: Death and Commemoration at Glasnevin
Cemetery in the Age of Ulysses

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In July 1920, James Joyce met Sylvia Beach, the American proprietor of Shakespeare and Company in Paris. Just two years away from the publication of Ulysses, she played a critical role as a literary advocate in the production and marketing of the novel. Beach had never visited Ireland. Joyce gifted her with a postcard featuring a view of Charles Stewart Parnell's grave in Glasnevin Cemetery (see Figures 1 and 2).1 Situated outside the ring of Dublin's two canals, Glasnevin Cemetery marks Leopold Bloom's most northerly point of visitation on 16 June 1904. The Beach card, combined with another tourist postcard of the Parnell grave (circa 1902—see Figure 3) clarified the general appearance of the Parnell grave site on ... Read More

           James Joyce

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In 1927, the British psychoanalyst Barbara Low published an article in the International Journal of Psycho-Analysis titled, "An Interesting Invented 'Portmanteau' Word."1 In it, Low describes how one of her patients, "a man of thirty-three, very much interested in words, a writer by profession," had unthinkingly uttered an entirely new word during one of their sessions. In the course of explaining his strange attraction to dirt—"'I can't account for it, yet I sometimes feel as if I should like to wallow in dirt'"—he "found himself murmuring, 'Patrer, patrer'" (73). At first, the patient misidentifies the word as the French verb for "to roll in": "How odd that I should think of that word," he exclaims, "it's the ... Read More

  • Corley's Aspirations and Gumley's Dreams in "Eumaeus"

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Toward the end of Homer's The Odyssey, Odysseus returns to his home in Ithaca posing as a beggar accompanied by Eumaeus his loyal swineherd,1 and in the "Eumaeus" episode of Joyce's Ulysses, John Corley appears to be a mendicant as well.2 Lies and disguise dominate each of these narrative moments and suggest we further examine the nature of Corley's suspicious appearance in the episode. The narrative of "Eumaeus" foregrounds such obfuscating language in its portrayal of deception, fraud, gossip, and unreliable myths that it has elicited several ingenious, speculative interpretations such as Horst Breuer's claim that Henry Flower is the author of the episode or James Ramey's suggestion that D. B. Murphy penned the ... Read More

Abstract: Leopold Bloom's consciousness—or at least the narrative of Ulysses as it is shaped by Bloom's consciousness—reflects an internal life preoccupied with both Bloom's unresolved grief for his son Rudy as well as the more base aspects of human life. His sexual and morbid preoccupations, from rumps and defecation to sadomasochistic roleplay, are often revealed through allusions to nursery rhymes or children's language and literature. As a result, food and digestion, sex (including sexual development, initiation, and frustration), and death intertwine in Bloom's mind, and nursery rhymes often function as manifestations of this interrelationship. The appearance of nursery rhymes and, by extension, themes of childhood and ... Read More

  • The Borrowed Dreams of Dubliners

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In Finnegans Wake, Shem utters an infamous line that scholars often turn back onto its author, fashioning an ars poetica for Joyce's compositional techniques: "how cutely to copy all their various styles of signature so as one day to utter an epical forged cheque on the public for his own private profit."1 Simon Critchley and Tom McCarthy quote the phrase and argue that the "epical cheque denotes Joyce's own novel"—Finnegans Wake, yes, but also everything from A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man onwards: "ever since Portrait it has been axiomatic for him that art is forgery."2 Their exclusion of Dubliners leaves us to wonder whether the axioms that guide these stories are different from the punning sense of ... • European Joyce Studies 30: Retranslating Joyce for the 21st Century ed. by
Jolanta Wawrzycka and Erika Mihálycsa (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: As announced by the editors, Jolanta Wawrzycka and Erika Mihálycsa, in their painstakingly researched and persuasively argued introduction, Retranslating Joyce for the 21st Century is a volume that compiles the work of scholars and translators with the aim of addressing a broad set of issues pertinent to Joyce studies from the perspectives of translation studies and translation theories. The focus of this collection of essays, published in Brill Rodopi's European Joyce Studies series, is the (rather slippery) notion of "retranslation" invoked and applied differently by different authors in/to their contrastive discussions of old and new translations of Joyce's works, mainly Ulysses. As the editors warn in the ... Read More

  • Modernism and Food Studies: Politics, Aesthetics, and the Avant-Garde ed.
by Jessica Martell et al. (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: One of the more recent turns in modernist studies has been toward food and its consumption, a trend that is well represented in Modernism and Food Studies, which focuses on food aesthetics, culinary traditions and the challenges to them, the production and consumption of foodstuffs, and the concept of foodways, which Graig Uhlin, in his chapter on film, describes as the "entire life cycle of food" from raw materials to sale and consumption (215). The emphasis throughout the volume falls on the "material reality of food," particularly "the cultural work" growing out of this reality, the "attitudes, perceptions, fantasies, beliefs, aesthetics, representations" that are themselves powerful determinants of the ... • The Necessary Fiction: Life with James Joyce's "Ulysses," by Michael
           Groden (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Editor's Note: this review was composed and sent to the JJQ before the passing of Michael Groden, to whom we will pay tribute in a forthcoming issue. We are printing the piece as submitted, without edits reflecting the loss of the author and critic.Michael Groden's The Necessary Fiction carves out a distinct niche within Joyce studies, which is fitting, since Groden has done the same. The book chronicles the author's personal and professional development alongside his affective engagement with Ulysses over half a century as well as his critical assessment of the novel as a humane, empathetic work. Ulysses functions as a prism through which Groden views his memories and reckons with his personal struggles; in ... Read More

  • The Red Bank. James Joyce: His Greek Notebooks dir. by Vouvoula Skoura
           (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: James Joyce's engagement with the Greek language and culture has been the focus of a number of scholars, including Mantō Aravantinou, who was one of the first to examine Joyce's Greek notes from the time he was learning that language in Zurich.1 Her work offered the springboard for Vouvoula Skoura and the linguist Vangelis Intzidis to create an experimental documentary on Joyce and his engagement with Greek culture. Intzidis wrote the script, which he called a "hybrid" since it contains lines from Ulysses, A Portrait, The Odyssey, Joyce's Greek notebooks, and his correspondence.2 The film is an original work of art with myriads of visual and textual references to Joyce's writings, the geopolitical crises of his ... • Modernism and Physical Illness: Sick Books by Peter Fifield (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Peter Fifield sets the parameters for Modernism and Physical Illness in his introduction. He is primarily concerned with close readings of physical illnesses as they appear in modernist novels (1-30). Fifield's analysis is deeply invested in the ways aesthetic representations of physical illness align with modernist sensibilities overall: "the greater part of the significance of illness lies beyond any strict or exclusive version of the medical. Indeed, in some cases the medical is felt explicitly as a framing perspective that distorts or overlooks qualities of experience and meaning that are created by illness" (27). One of the main tensions within the book is the relationship between the individual experience of ... Read More

  • As One Generation Tells Another: Teaching James Joyce in a Secondary
           Classroom by Dylan Emerick-Brown (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In "Nestor," Stephen Dedalus interrogates his primary school students about the Pyrrhic War, asking poor Armstrong about the fate of Pyrrhus.1 When Armstrong is unable to answer, Stephen becomes exasperated: "Do you know anything about Pyrrhus'" (U 2.21). The pupil replies that he was "a pier," later explaining that a pier is a "kind of bridge" (U 2.32). "[A] disappointed bridge," Stephen clarifies before lapsing into more internal melancholy (U 2.39).I always felt sorry for Armstrong here. His innocent answer to a question he knows nothing about has been reiterated in countless forms by countless students. We have all been in this position before. It is one of those uncomfortable and risible aspects of being a ... Read More

  • Panepiphanal World: James Joyce's Epiphanies by Sangam MacDuff (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In recent years, a small number of new publications have returned to the margins of the Joyce canon. Both The Poetry of James Joyce Reconsidered and Joyce's Non-Fiction Writings: "Outside His Jurisfiction" offer unprecedented full-length critical appreciations of Joyce's early writings.1 This new monograph by Sangam MacDuff follows suit by looking at another neglected area of Joyce's work: the epiphanies. A concerted reappraisal of Joyce prose poems, and the theory behind it, is certainly a welcome addition to Joyce scholarship. Unfortunately, MacDuff's work is not always of the same quality and rigor as the earlier two books.MacDuff's central and important argument is that Joyce "never outgrew" the aesthetics of ... • The Enigma of Arthur Griffith: "Father of Us All," by Colum Kenny (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In October 1921, Arthur Griffith was part of the delegation sent to London for treaty talks that ended years of war and proclaimed self-governance in an Irish Free State; yet, stipulations of a loyalty to the Crown and dominion status were non-starters to many back in Dublin, including Dáil Éireann President Éamon de Valera. He had remained at a distance, appointing Griffith, Michael Collins, and four others as plenipotentiaries to negotiate and sign the Treaty, which they finally did on 6 December 1921. It still required ratification by simple majority in the Dáil. Griffith and his co-delegates considered the result an incremental step towards independence, while de Valera and his followers believed it to be an ... Read More
