  • "Their labour doth returne rich golden gaine": Fishmongers' Pageants and
the Fisherman's Labor in Early Modern London
    • Abstract: Audiences for early modern English plays inhabited an island kingdom. Therefore the drama's preoccupation with the sea comes as no surprise. Maritime settings abound in comedy, tragedy, history, and romance. Even the most ostensibly land-bound genres, such as city comedy, incorporate the ocean in ways that signal its importance to the nation's identity and, more specifically, its economy.1 Indeed, A. F. Falconer speculates that the period's most famous playwright, Shakespeare, spent time at sea himself—so diverse and plentiful are the maritime references in Shakespeare's canon.2The ocean also figures prominently in the London Lord Mayors' shows, civic pageants staged to commend one citizen's ascendancy to the ... • Lady Precious Stream: A Chinese Chinoiserie Anglicized on the Modern
           British Stage
    • Abstract: Chinoiserie on the British stage had a long history and a time-honored tradition. Interestingly enough, some of the most notable chinoiserie performances on the British stage did not originate in Britain but were imported products. In 1897, at the very beginning of his scathing review of the performance of two "Chinese" plays, The Cat and the Cherub by Chester Bailey Fernald at the Lyric Theatre and The First Born by Francis Powers at the Globe Theatre, George Bernard Shaw attacked what he called "the Chinatown play" imported from America as "the latest attempt to escape from hackneydom and cockneydom" on the British stage.1 In "the Chinatown play," Shaw continued, the Chinese music was "unmitigated humbug" and ... • Transplacing Ophelia: Woman and Nation in the Earliest Russian Hamlets
    • Abstract: Shakespeare's Hamlet has always been accompanied by international politicization. As early as 1605—within a couple of years of the play's publication in England—an anonymous English author described the contemporaneous deposition of the government of Boris Godunov, a Russian tsar, as being "a first [tragedy], but no second to any Hamlet."1 Centuries later, in 1828, Ludwig Borne turned to Shakespeare in an attempt to explain Germany's destiny; he linked the country's failure to take political action with Prince Hamlet's famous hesitation.2 And in China of the 1930s, Lao She's New Hamlet parodied what was called the "Hamlet complex," or China's "inability to act at a time of national crisis."3This tendency to ... • Inspiration from the "Really Real": David Henry Hwang's Yellow Face and
           Documentary Theatre
    • Abstract: According to David Henry Hwang, two literary influences for his Obie-winning play Yellow Face were Tennessee Williams's The Glass Menagerie and Eugene O'Neill's Long Day's Journey into Night, both of which rely on a stand-in character for the author as he revisits painful autobiographical memories.1 In writing Yellow Face, Hwang did not want the same thing to happen to his literary doppelgänger DHH that happened to Tom Wingfield and Edmund Tyrone, namely, paling in comparison to the rest of the play's richly defined characters. However, the more he wrote, the less concerned Hwang became: "I found that…creating a character that I actually gave my name to…liberated me to make him a character…. It's kind of ... Read More

  • What Was Tragedy': Theory and the Early Modern Canon by Blair Hoxby
           (review)
    • Abstract: Tragedy has been the philosophers' favorite genre since the time of Aristotle. That readers and audiences can find the depiction of suffering, bloodshed, and death compelling, moving, or even beautiful must speak to mysteries very near the heart of the human experience. Much diversity exists among theorists, but there is a broad consensus over what, in the hands of a true practitioner, tragedy is: in the hands of a true practitioner, we are offered the ennobling spectacle of man overthrown but unclaimed. Though suffering and dying, set upon by fate, the gods, God, or society, he is nevertheless unsullied and proves his greatness of soul, or the justice of his cause, in the face of hostility that can destroy but not ... • The Birth of Theater from the Spirit of Philosophy: Nietzsche and the
Modern Drama by David Kornhaber (review)
    • Abstract: The Birth of Tragedy from the Spirit of Philosophy is Nietzsche's first and most famous book. Whether modern commentators consider it his best or most important text is doubtful. It may be mentioned first in studies of Nietzsche but is generally left behind when the emphasis shifts to his later work. David Kornhaber's book is a departure from most recent studies since he considers it the key Nietzsche text. He claims the reason for modern critics' comparative neglect of it is due to their lack of appreciation of what Nietzsche is really concerned with in The Birth of Tragedy. This lack of understanding does not only apply to modern commentators but was initiated by the scathing attack by the philologist Wilomowitz ... Read More

  • Law and Sexuality in Tennessee Williams's America by Jacqueline O'Connor
           (review)
    • Abstract: In this diffuse but suggestive study, O'Conner considers a sampling of Tennessee Williams's plays and stories—and the Memoirs—alongside "the history of laws that governed sexual behavior" in the American twentieth century (16). • Childhood and Nineteenth-Century American Theatre: The Work of the Marsh
Troupe of Juvenile Actors by Shauna Vey (review)
    • Abstract: Written with clear affection for her subjects and delight in the forensic work of historical research, Shauna Vey's book tells us the story of a company of child actors, the Marsh Troupe. Four children stand at the heart of her investigation. They are the core members of this some thirty-strong company of juvenile actors that was founded and managed by Robert Guerineau Marsh in 1855. Two of this central quartet were his own children: Mary Marsh (born 1847) and Georgie Marsh (born 1850); they were joined by Alfred Stewart (born 1843) and Louise Arnot (born 1844). For five years, the troupe enthralled audiences across North America—from Boston to New Orleans to Quebec to San Francisco—before embarking for Australia ... Read More
